OK I posted this on the resorts board and only got one reply so I thought I would post here:

OK, we had our big family vacation at OKW in a grand villa for the the 10 of us over Thanksgiving. Christmas is over and we are now planning our next trip for just the two of us. One resort we have not stayed at is Vero Beach. We are thinking end of August to mid September. Been looking online at the resort but thought I would put this post here as I have learned from my many years on DIS this is the best place to get a real feel for the place. Any ideas about the type of accommodations, location and time from those who have been there would be greatly appreciated.....smjj

We stayed in one of the Ocean View Inn Rooms when we went with just the two of us. There wasn't a studio available when we tried to book. I remember being a little nervous when I booked it, but very pleased when we arrived. It's more of a traditional hotel room design than a studio, and had a beautiful view. Everything is close at VB, because it isn't a large resort. Can't remember exactly when we were there, but it would have been late July or early August based on our typical trips. Obviously, this was the perfect time to be at the beach.

One thing I do remember is that there were absolutely no waves when we were there. (We're used to Jersey beaches, and much larger surf.) I don't know if it was the particular weather when we were there, the time of year, or if it's always like that. It was almost like a lake.

Do consider that late Aug/Sept is inside the Hurricane season. The weather could be extremely HOT and MUGGY if conditions are right.

However -- I believe that turtle hatching occurs sometime in August? Perhaps you could coordinate your dates to coincide with likely hatching schedules?

Edited to add: We've been twice .. and both visits were joined by "named storms": Hurricane Frances, late Aug 2004; and TS Debby in June 2012. Just goes with the territory, I s'pose?

I was the lone post on your other thread. Late August/early September is prime hurricane season. Last year had no real named storms. But if you look at history, most of the big storms happen in late August, early September.

Have you considered Hilton Head? There are so many wonderful things both activities and dining in/around Hilton Head.

That was the one thing I preferred about HH over Vero. Vero seemed a little more isolated where as in HH you could easily walk to restaurants/activities or get to them within 5 minutes. Also, Charleston and Savanna are a short drive and make great day trips if the weather is to chilly for hanging out at the beach.

We've stayed there twice. Once was in July, and the other time was in January. We love it. In January, we got really lucky as the temperatures were in the 80's and we had flown down from the NE. It is quiet. I asked to see one of the cottages, and I was surprised to find that the resort was full. Both times we stayed in ocean view rooms, which for the most part, are the same as a studio. There are some decent little places within walking distance, but driving into Vero Beach isn't a big deal either. We haven't stayed at HH so I can't compare. I just know that it's a wonderful, quiet getaway....

I love Hilton Head. It's a beautiful, peaceful, relaxing resort but has the convenience that there are several restaurants and shops you can walk to. :) We went in February and lucked out because it was sunny at 70 degrees. They have a shuttle to the beach. We took a boat out to see the dolphins and they swam with us for part of the way. I really want to go back!

Stayed at VB 9/1/13-9/5/13. Labor Day was 9/2/13, the place was fairly crowded 9/1 & 9/2, not overwhelming. By 9/3/13 the place resembled a ghost town, very uncrowded, not a lot of children and the noise they create. Very peaceful and relaxing. Beautiful weather, surf fine, water temp good; usually an afternoon shower around 3-4 PM, which cooled things down. Good dining facility, lounge on the 2nd floor of the Inn overlooking the ocean. Grounds well groomed. Had a one BR oceanview, which was spectacular. You should be able to request any room you want that time of the year. Make sure you request an oceanview, as some of the rooms aren't.

We thought about HH and decided we wanted to be on the beach. I understand HH requires a shuttle to get to the beach. Having never stayed at either, we decided on VB this time but would also like to try HH...smjj
