Now the names of some birds are offensive.

Yep, but as as the other person noted its still the Rose Bowl played in the Rose Bowl. More important though it has always been the "Rose Bowl presented by..." They never sold out to things like the absurd sponsorships like "Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl" or "Famous Idaho Potato Bowl" or the less absurd "Capital One Orange Bowl" or "Tostitos Fiesta Bowl"
I agree the corporate naming of the arenas and stadiums is annoying. I live in soFla and we had the FTX area which locals still call the Miami Arena.. We also had at one point the Panthers arena called the National Car Rental Center, which sounded like you would go there to rent your car after landing at the airport not to see a hockey game or a concert.

On a tangentially related note, anyone think Pluto should be made a planet again?

YES!!! Absolutely! Talk about exclusionism! Poor Pluto, hanging out at the edge of our (then known) solar system, so happy to be included with the other planets. Then it was demoted to being a DWARF planet, 😲 and excluded due to it's SIZE. 🥺

:sad2: :furious: :badpc:

BTW, even as a little kid, way before I watched Star Trek, I knew there were a couple more planets out there beyond Pluto. Because when I would be asked how many planets are in our solar system, I would answer: Eleven! :thumbsup2 (There may even be 12 now.)

Why is our planet the only one NOT named after a Greco-Roman deity?
"Unlike the other planets in the Solar System, in English, Earth does not directly share a name with an ancient Roman deity. The name Earth derives from the eighth century Anglo-Saxon word erda, which means ground or soil, and ultimately descends from Proto-Indo European *erþō."

"Most likely Earth was not named after a Greco-Roman god because it was not recognized as a planet in antiquity. The word planet means wanderer and the name Earth comes from the German word Erda and the Old English derivative of Erda, Ertha. In both languages it means ground. The ground doesn't wander."

Not many people in the early days had a handle on celestial bodies.
