The office manager for the law firm I work for just sent out an email saying that someone from Office Services will go around the office tomorrow confiscating everyone's space heaters. :furious: It appears that as of lately we've had circuits fail in in several areas of the office causing a pc to blow and power boxes to fail. While I can understand the need to take these away, I can't help but to point out that without my little space heater my office can get as cold as a meat locker. I guess I'm reduced to wearing my thermo underwear to work from now on. Maybe if I brew up a little :stir: all will be right.

funny you should mention that - same thing happened here. when complaints were made, they said "dress appropriately". well thanks for nothing, but I thought my blouse, sweater and coat should be considered enough - how 'bout you put some insulation in?

I worked at a place that did that too.

People went home that night - bought their own heaters, and brought them back in.

You cant confiscate someone's personal property. :thumbsup2

The men in this office love to have the place FREEZING, even though the majorioty of people here are FREEZING women (but that's another thread for another day). We have tried to do the space heater thing, but they kept tripping the circuits. I never used the space heater, I just dealt with being cold. I think most of them are no longer used, except for one lady whose office always feels like a rain forest with the heat and the water from her fountain.

They did that at our office, too. It's so cold in here in the wintertime that one of our co-workers bought us all small fleece blankets for Christmas. It was the best thing I received! And it tends to make management feel a bit guilty when the office staff is wandering around with blankets wrapped around them. :teeth:

Ahem....I'm an Ops Manager at an insurance company and I've told people here that they can't have space heaters either......our landlord tells me it's because of insurance reasons. Also, we've had blown circuits before as they draw a lot of power.

I know, I know, the newbie coming in and ruining things for everyone :) I'm actually glad it's finally spring time, because now I don't have to worry about the weather again until next year!

Just jumping in as I do safety for an insurance broker and we always tell our clients not to allow individual space heaters. It is usually the fire marshall that makes the decision in different areas. The problem is not only blown fuses but fires caused by the combustible things people store under their desks.

Awwwww, do you wanna sit on the copy machine with me and take pictures of our butts???? :thumbsup2 That'll cheer ya up :teeth:

I'd be lost without my space heater. It's almost 60 degrees today and I still had it on for a couple of hours. lol.

At our company I think it was the fire marshall that doesn't like the space heaters so when we get inspected we have to hide them.
I guess we're pretty lucky though, we kept tripping a breaker with our space heaters and they came in and added a new circuit!!! I was shocked, but this building literally doesn't have heat so we've got to have something.
(of course we live in FL so maybe I shouldn't even be posting)

Yeah, plus if you make a lot of copies it will get nice and toasty.

:sunny:

We have the same problem where I work - it's cold & people get their own space heaters & then trip the power, or make the cost go way up. I work in the Facilities dept, so we're always having to deal w/temp issues. One of the guys I work with got some heat panels - they are low energy & sit under your desk -- they really help, and are cost effective.

Could you find out where he got them? I have never heard of that and would be very interested in checking them out. I have to use my space heater year round because the AC is blasting so bad it's worse in the summer. My DD and I are one of those people you see walking around WDW after the sun goes down in hoodies and jeans.

If your firm is leasing its space, it could be a breach of your lease to have such heaters on the premises. Could also be fire code and/or property insurance issues.

I work for a major insurance company and space heaters are banned in our office. We have cubicles and the wiring can't take them, they blow the circuit breakers. We seem to have more of a problem with it being too warm, so far they haven't banned the desk fans. Good thing, because most of us are in our 40's and are starting hot flashes!

at our school, if Public Safety sees a space heater, they're authorized to cut the plug off, personal property or not. It's a fire issue. I didn't have heat in my office for 7 years, my boss brought an extra electric heater in from his house. I had a note on my lightswitch to make sure I shut it off before I leave.... More than once, I've driven back to my office at night to make sure I did shut it off.

Our plumber finally put a small radiator in for me. Well, that leaks all over my rug every time I put it on. My rug was all moldy, which I'm allergic to, plus the smell from it was gross, and it leaked downstairs into the women's locker room...... Needless to say, I can't use the radiator at all, and I can't use the electric heater, hmm, what to do?

I'm not angry that I don't have heat, I totally understand since we've lost two historical buildings to fires... once an accident from a candle and once from mechanical.... so now I I wear fleece vest/jackets, long sleeve t-shirts and I have a blanket for when I'm really cold.

I worked at a place that did that, too. I just brought my own in.

There were also funny "protests":

One of the girls showed up dressed in her regular clothes, but brought her bathrobe and slippers to keep warm!

Others wore coats.

One girl said she was sorry her report was late, but she had to keep going to the cafeteria to warm her hands because they were so cold she couldn't type!

We are allowed to have space heaters in our offices. I remember when we moved into our new building my office was so freaking cold that I brought a blanket into work but then they got me a space heater so I'm fine now. Although it's been 80 degrees lately so I haven't used it in a long time.

I used to work in a small college bookstore. When the college went on break, we were typically still open in the bookstore, but maintenance would shut down the heat or A/C in our building, leaving us to freeze or roast to death. One winter we complained and the head of maintenance brought us a crappy little space heater for our back office. :rotfl2:
