Now I know why the 8 night Rome cruise is so cheap

My husband is doing a trip this Spring to England to walk the Cotswalds Way. He took one look at the airfare and was shocked.

He ended up doing cheap flight to NY, a 15 day transatlantic cruise on Royal Carribbean, interior cabin, still had to pay more bc he's alone in Cabin, a few excursions, plus transfer from Rome to airport, plus a flight from Rome to London, for equal the price. Now he planned to do premium economy, and then upgrade to business bc that's what we did on a European vacation last year, and this was a treat for losing a ton of weight, but still! So I won't see him for a month but might as well get something for that kind of money.

We are planning a trip to Hawaii after Christmas for my extended family, and my gift was airfare for my kids and their family. Made that promise a year ago....airfare for 10! Just recently made the reservation.....ouch!

Yes, we aren't on that cruise, but another DCL Europe one this summer - I almost bailed when I saw the airfare (we were last in Europe in 2018 and the airfare is at least 50%-100% more this year). I was able to get one ticket using airline rewards points and am trying to keep our pre-cruise hotel costs down, but, most definitely, that "cheap cruise" is not so cheap anymore. I obviously need to stop creating budgets using costs from 5 years ago!

We were planning a med cruise in June but a few weeks ago we decided to push it to next year and do Disneyland and Hawaii this June instead because the European airfare is so insane right now. Now we just have to hope it comes down for next year and doesn't go up even more.... haha

If the Dream still sails (one way) from Miami to Barcelona in 2024, I might still consider it but yikes how much more will airfares go up. My friend wants to go as Spain and Portugal are on her bucket list. We’ll have to look at land packages too.

So glad we got on it early and were able to use frequent flyer miles for four! We are using Home Away and VRBO for stays in Rome and Barcelona. Saves us lots of money when traveling with two kids.

Airfare from Australia to the US is the highest it's been since I started flying there in 2003
Roughly AU$1700 per person.
I'm used to paying around AU$1000 per person so it's a large jump when you're talking about 4 people.

No doubt airfare is going up for all kinds of flights! But cruiselines and other vacation places aren't discounting prices because air is high. :) If some cruises are less than others, it's because they haven't sold as well for whatever reason - 8 nights is kind of a weird number to fit in a vacation for a lot of people - especially when counting in needing at least a day to travel on either side.

I was only kidding with the price, but with that said I do think it would direct people to other cruises or other types of vacation.
It would also direct more europeans to stay in europe and go on a local disney cruise rather then go to the states for one. It more or less evens out I would of thought.

It's not some cruises it's just about every European cruise. I look at airfare and hotel prices before I book anything out of Europe. Airfare and hotel prices go into my decision on what cruise to take.

Anyone looked at or flown with Norse Airways? They are the former Norwegian Air and are advertising budget pricing.

but we don't get any of the fun like Halloween, Christmas, Marvel and Pixar and tbh the European sailings are getting more and more B-ports instead of premium ports, especially for the northern routes

The strange thing is: I find flights from Europe to US to be much much cheaper this summer. My mother in law who lives in the US was thinking of visiting us in Germany this summer and mentioned prices being sky high. I did a search but accidentally searched from Germany to US and thought 900€ is not a cheap flight, but for summer it would be ok. The realized it was the wrong direction and swapped departure and arrival airports. Airfare went from 900€ to 1700€!!!

Flights FROM Europe are always cheaper than flights TO Europe. Might be taxes?

There ARE some cheaper airlines that people should try:

SAS (connect through Copenhagen) SAS

Play Airlines (Connect through Iceland) Play Airlines

Norse Airlines - They are starting flights from SFO on July 1 - teaser fare is $185, which is without seat selection, checked bag, etc. Norse Atlantic Airways

Icelandair (connect through Iceland, they have a free stopover option - giving you a few days in Iceland - not a free hotel but no charge to stopover) Icelandair

I did take Norwegian a few years back to connect with the Disney Magic TATL cruise. It was fine! I didn't sample the meal and an FA spilled ice water on me but hey, stuff happens! With the above airlines you might have to do a 'positioning flight' to one of their hubs (like on Spirit) but it might be worth it.
