Now Approaching... Sleepingbooty's Sept. PTR (We're BAAACK! 9/26)

Lovely ceremony!! That's so sweet for the other mom to think of you leaders and want to do something so special!

I know! It made me tear up, I'll admit:blush:

Great GS ceremony.

That cake is making me have an unhealthy urge to get up and eat cake right now---(It's only 10:30 in the morning! )

I love cake for breakfast!

Hey SB!

What an awesome find on the Disneyana!

Looks like the girls all had a great time. We are nearing the age of scouting for our two so I'm sure it will only be a matter of time.

Hey GB! I know, I thought it was pretty cool. Now I've been scouting ebay for more vintage Disney stuff to go with it.

Oh, your girls will love scouting - its such a neat experience. Well, if you have the right leader, that is :rolleyes1

Wow! That looks like such a great cake!

I was in scouts for 2 years. It was a co-ed scouts, but most parents don't put their girls in scouts anyways....Well, my mom didn't know about girl guides and scouts it was! As expected, I was the only girl...

Btw, that dish set is just gorgeous. I can't believe nobody scooped it up!

I know! I can't believe no one bought it!

Girl Scouts in Canada and Europe are called Girl Guides, right? But I think they're all part of the same international organization. So you did a co-ed scout troop? That had to be an interesting experience!

I don't know if woud trust mysef with a case full of thin mints to sell.

That'd be torture for me. I always buy one box for home and one to keep at the office. It was only recently that the fam figured out that I didn't bring home all that I bought. :rolleyes1

We bought 23 boxes of cookies this year. Yep, you heard that right, 23. Just for us. Well, let me explain - both girls were nearing the next incentive level - Jenna needed to sell 10 more, and Lucy 13 so that they could earn the prize. I couldn't let them get that close and not make it, could I :confused3

We said, "oh we'll freeze most of them" - NOPE, ate them all!

I think it took us about a month to go through all 23 boxes (yes, I know you're all shaking your heads in wonderment), and during that time, Scott ALWAYS had his own box at work. I have no idea how many he went through on his own.

Ch. 31. Cocina Espanola - Ole!

At exactly 5:00 pm yesterday, we surpassed a major milestone - we made it into double digits!

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

So, to celebrate, I thought I'd try to recreate one of my favorite Disney treats: churros! I was walking through my friendly local Walleyworld last week, when I spotted, on the top shelf in the Mexican aisle, a box of instant churro mix. I'd looked up recipes online before, but never managed to work up the motivation needed to combine flour, baking soda, eggs - you know, to cook from scratch. But a boxed mix? That I can do!

Unfortunately, being produced in Mexico, the instructions on the package were in Spanish. Which I don't speak. Okay, there was an English translation, but you know how translations go - there's always something lost. They just didn't read right.

According to the directions, I was supposed to boil a cup of water and add to the mix. Okay. Hmmmm, why does this not seem like enough water to moisten all this mix? Supposedly, I should have been able to stir it with a wooden spoon until foamy. Foamy? Really? One cup of water moistened the mix, after much arduous, two-handed stirring, to the consistency of dried out playdough. So I tried squishing it all together by hand. This managed to even it out a bit - but I just didn't think I'd be able to squirt it through the (enclosed!) pastry bag and out the star shaped tip. So I improvised. I strayed from the directions. Yes, I know that's not prudent, but I figured if it didn't work out, we had two cartons of ice cream in the freezer anyway.

I added another cup of boiling water to the mix. Yeah, it didn't work out so well. I just really couldn't get it to mix in to the dough - it was a clumpy, runny mess. So I reached in to knead it again, burning my hands in the process, and gave it a few scrunches. Ah, what the heck, we'll see what happens.

All the while, mind you - my pot of hot oil is burping in the background. Literally. Big bubbles kept rising to the top and bursting. I only had the temp on medium, but what do I know about deep frying? So, I made a few tentative squirts of dough into the pot. Not bad! They actually sort of looked like churros! Well, twisted, freaky, horror show churros:

I of course, doused them liberally in cinnamon sugar - and they really weren't bad at all! A little too crunchy on the outside, but they tasted fairly churro-ish.

Jenna ate about half of one. She wouldn't say she didn't like it, she's too sweet for that - but I could tell. Lucy, on the other hand, ate two or three after getting over the strange shapes.

I ate a few myself. Not bad dipped in ice cream. Um, not so good the next day. I'm eating one right now - very chewy, all the crispness is gone. Blech. I wonder if there is a way to make a homemade Dole Whip?

That's an awesome attempt at making Churro's! My hat goes off to you for even making the attempt. They turned out not half bad for being hand made. I'm sure Disney has a machine that does it for them to make it perfect everytime. Your daughters reaction is priceless :lmao:

Thanks Jen, it was fun regardless. So, are you planning on starting that next TR anytime soon? popcorn::

That second picture is adorable!! Mmmm I wish there was a way to make Dole Whips!!

:cool1: YAY for double digits!!! :cool1:

Your churro story cracked me up!! Glad you were able to enjoy them at least for one day!! :goodvibes

Well, they actually look like churros to me! Home made ones anyways. Kudos to your success!

I've never had churros....But I remember being curious the last time I was there. It's not a common snack food in Canada. I'll have to give it a try on my trip though

Thanks!

You know, a couple years ago after we got back from a trip - I actually looked up pineapple soft serve online. I found that you could buy mix for it on ebay! I almost bought some, as my aunt and uncle have a soft serve ice cream maker. But you had to buy a huge amount - I guess its meant for commercial use.

No, its not common in Missouri either, but we had them all the time when I was a little kid in Southern California. When I had my first WDW churro 5 years ago, it totally took me right back to childhood!

:lmao: Yes, first she battled over whether it looked edible - then her tummy won out and she made peace with the funky churro!

I adore churros! We have made them at home too, and they are soooo tasty!! Not hard either!
