Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness.

Hi, all.

I decided to start a thread for the rest of the year--do you believe it's coming up so quickly? People get busy, but still hope that a few will come and join the chat.

Today I did an easy 8. Since I am just running some maintenance mileage, I set my Garmin to just show distance. One big set of numbers--which is good for my eyes! So I don't have a clue what pace I ran, and I'm trying to keep it that way. It is hard, though, not to pass judgment on what pace I think I'm running!

Heading east tomorrow with dog to visit my mom and then watch DD run in the Division 3 XC regionals at Williams. Hope they make it through to Nationals. They are at Wartburg College in Iowa, and my DH loves their XC/track clothing since it has their initials. And since this board won't allow the post---just consider Wartburg Track & Field. What the ?

Also took dog to run the other day-which I usually never do. Funny thing, after his usual "grayhound" start, I found that after 1.5 miles or so, I was having to really pull him along. Time to work on dog fitness!

Maura

Maura: Very funny about the dog! Mine is also a greyhound for a short period of time, but I think that because he has to run ahead to the tree and then, mark territory, and then, try to catch up, he just wears himself out. Of course, mine is just a little 25 pound terrier, but why is he so out of shape at age 2?

I'm reporting in to say that I'm doing NOTHING! I saw my massage therapist Wednesday night, and she looked at my ankle and calf and said it was "visibly swollen," and recommended that I take some time off. I had originally planned to do a "short" long run of around 5 miles yesterday, but took her advice and slept in instead.

Today I followed DH around while he ran the City of Oaks Half Marathon - proud to report that not only did he meet his goal of 1:45, he beat it by almost 3 full minutes with a 1:42:09! Only in my dreams will I ever be able to keep up with him...

After last week's disaster at MCM, I've at least gotten past the "never" stage and have progressed to the "well, maybe one more time" would I consider a full marathon. It's still unlikely!

Jackie

I just found this section of the Dis board so HELLO everyone!

I actually ran a my last race of the year today......its getting too cold up here in the north and I hate the cold so I am done until the new year but I will be in full training mode. So I ran a 10K today, wanted it to be an easy run since I knew it would be cold and I came in 3rd in my category which I am super excited about :cool1: My time was 50:45.....not my best 10K time but not my worst so I am good with that.

Hoping to hear about everyones races and training!

Maura Gotta love those maintenance miles. No stress. Hope your daughter does great at regional.

Jackie How's that hip? Thought you were going to have it looked at after the MCM.

m&c Welcome. I'm trying to get used to running in the cold.

AFM-Did a 15K+ this morning. I did wait until it got a little warmer. I'm looking at a 5K Santa Scramble Nov 20. The 5K is the first entry of the local parade and is billed as a PR race-slight downhill all the way. Also looking at a local 10K on Thanksgiving.

Maura and Tandy: It's so funny to hear the dog running posts! I find it very difficult to run WITHOUT my dog. Jack the German Shepherd has done the majority of runs with me - except for the few months when I was VERY pregnant and I took my slower, older German Shepherd, Sasha, out with me. I found that she just stressed me out, though, and I missed my Jack. I clip his leash on to my hydration belt and he runs along perfectly right next to me. Every once in awhile he bumps my hand with his nose and looks up at me like, "this is fun, isn't it, Sarah!?" :lmao:

I would never have made it through my 20 mile training runs last year without him. I don't run with music, I can't run with other people, but I NEED my Jack. We even chat when the going gets tough, and he keeps me putting the miles in. :goodvibes

This dog is never allowed to get old or die. Ever.

Glad to see there is a November (and December) thread. My training is pretty much in full swing. It almost feels like a second job at times but I know I didn't do enough for my first full and refuse to repeat that mistake.

I'm doing the Hal Higdon pland and this is one of the weeks where the long run goes down to a shorter run to recover. It was only 11 which I got out of the way yesterday.

Jackie- I hope you get the all clear to get back to training soon. My first full didn't go as planned and I had that day or two of never again but once the race amnesia kicked in I decided to do the full this January. Nest year though my focus will be on trying a first tri, albeit a sprint, before trying to tackle the full for a third time. It really is a dramatic jump from the half, way more so then the 10K to the half was, at least for me.

M&C and Joan- I used to hate running in the cold but got some good winter running gear and have learned to love it. I really like the weeks leading up to Christmas because you can go on a run to look at the Christmas lights. So far this fall the weather has been pretty nice. It's in the high 30's here so I am still going out in shorts and a long sleeve tech shirt. Once it drops to the low 30's I'll have to break out the winter stuff.

Looks like another good thread to follow! :flower3: I'm doing my first half at Disney in Jan. :cheer2:

Jackie - I'm on the same doing NOTHING plan as you at the moment. I've got an MRI scheduled tomorrow morning to confirm that I tore my right calf last Thursday night. I guess its somewhat appropriate that my last run of 2010 will be under 2 miles at an 11+ mile pace. That's the kind of year that its been for me.

Pat & Jackie - make room for me in the "doing nothing crowd". After my DNS at the Monster Dash in Minneapolis, my PT put me on a "no-run" regime. Stretch & strengthen only. I couldn't get an appt. with my ortho until 11/19. They'll re-evaluate my hammie at that time and let me know if I can start some "light" running again.

Mermaid & Cinderella - Congrats on your race and welcome to WISH!

Pumbaa - my first half was at WDW! After I finished asking myself if I was crazy, I realized how much fun it really was.

Terri

Welcome & congrats on your race! That's a great time--you must be a very speedy runner. What's your first race lined up for next year?

Jackie Wow....serious R&R is in order. I hope you heal soon. And congrats to your DH. That is a phenomenal time! He can be my "rabbit" if I ever run the same race.

Joan WTG on the 15k. That 5k sounds like it could be fun.

Sarah Jack sounds like a great dog.

Frank I started the thread with you in mind. :) (Gotta keep up with the speedy runners somehow!) I'm with you on the clothing/temps. I ran with tights the other day in 40-ish weather--should have been in shorts. Sounds like good goals for next year. I haven't figured that out yet. Boston will take me through April, but I don't know what I will do later.

Pat & Terri Hope you both heal quickly.

As for me....just did a "marathon" drive yesterday. MI to MA (750 miles) just me & dog. But now I'm "home" at my mom's. (Does anyone else get confused as to what to call their childhod home vs. their owned house?)

So not much running this week...but some yummy fried clams!

Maura

Does anyone miss Frank's cute little pictures in his signature (think that's what it is called)? And I'm not being creepy.

Nice drive Maura. something about going to see Mom...I'm going home as if she is home. Perhaps we had good childhoods.

Unfortunately someone on the community board doesn't like my sense of humor so I got some points. If I understand how they work though I will be dropping half of them today so my signature and avatar should be back then I think.

I personally think nothing should be off limits when it comes to humor but some others don't agree and since they are in charge they make the rules. It is what it is and I'll survive.

Hi WISHERs!!

Been a while, but stopping by to say "Hi!" Been working on getting ready for the Spacecoast Half which is less than 3 weeks away.

and now for a public service announcement...

DISboards WISH racing team members....

If you are interested in the order for WISH Racing Team Headsweats hats and or visors please go to the following thread to place your order.
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2537249
I have to have a minimum amount of orders to place an order, so this is usually only done ONCE a year.
If you want a WISH Racing Team hat/visor for the up coming year's races, now is the time to get one.
I need the minimum order placed by November 20th to get everyone's hats/visors to them by WDW January Marathon weekend.

Thanks,
Tracy

M&C - Welcome! I'm not real fond of cold weather either. Fortunately, it doesn't get truly cold here, at least from a northerner's perspective. We, however, complain mightily! Congratulations on placing in your race!

Joan
- Yeah, I need to call the ortho and schedule an appointment. It's hard to get motivated since the hip doesn't hurt at all. The only thing that bothered me for ALL 26.2 miles of MCM was the plantar fasciitis. Plus, we have inventory next week at work, and I know I can't do anything until I'm finished. So maybe the first of December?

Sarah
- Your statement made me sniffle. I said the same thing about my previous dog before DD went off to college. And then the dog went and got sick... :sad1: Jack sounds like a wonderful dog. I want to run with him!

Frank - Race amnesia is already setting in. I'm really unhappy. I've already checked the MCM website to see when next year's registration opens. :rolleyes1 At the very least, I'd like to run the 10K. Or maybe the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon - it's supposed to be really flat...

Pat - Any news from the MRI yet?

Terri - Welcome to the "injured reserve" list!

Maura - Actually, DH needs you to be his rabbit. He now has a new goal. Even though he claims not to want to run another full, he wants to BQ. Guess he has to run a full... and he needs a 3:30 to qualify. I don't know if I can stand the training!

Pumbaa - Welcome! My first half was Disney in '08. But watch out - it's highly contagious. And addictive.

I actually did my first post-MCM run tonight. My running partner texted me at lunch and asked if I wanted to run, and I stared at the phone like it was a foreign language. Then I thought about the fact that it was 70 degrees outside and told her I'd meet her after work for an easy 3 miles. And I lived to tell about it!

Jackie

Jackie: I'm happy to hear you ran today!!!! Good for you. How are you feeling?

Frank: Now I'm all curious. ;)

Maura: Fried clams. Yum! My parents don't live anywhere that we lived when I was a child, so I don't have that problem. My grandma still does though. It's nice to go "home". Yes, Boston is plenty!!!!!!

geaux half and Terri: sorry to hear you are both on injured reserve. Take it easy and get better!

Pumbaa: Welcome. I ran my first half this April and was so hooked that I'm running the half and full in January! I just love it!

Sarah: Your dog sounds wonderful. Mine would have to be carried for 15 miles of that 20 miler! But, he would love it!

Joan: Did you sign up for that Thanksgiving race? There is no way I could run on the holiday itself, unless I could talk hubby into cooking. Hmmmm:idea:

mermaid&cinderella: Great job on the race. That's fantastic!!!!! I came in 2nd in my category in my last half, but was still 22nd overall and in no way close to the front runners. Thats wonderful.

I ran my first 20 miler on Saturday and am now officially hooked on long distances. It was an amazing feeling. When people keep asking me why I run, I always say that it's the feeling of accomplishment afterwards and that I actually dislike it the entire time I'm running. But, that wasn't true this time. I loved it. And, I was in pain for 16ish miles, but it just didn't matter.
I even walked the dog later that day and went to the zoo and still felt great!!!

I am finding my way back to the WISH boards as I ramp up my Goofy training. I am trying to be better with my training which has been lacking as of late (I am managing to get out at least for my long run/walks each week) I have never been one to do too much during the week running although I know that will help my time. Just have to find the motivation and time to do the short runs during the week. I am quite sure I will be able to finish Goofy since I did last year I just don't think I will get any record times but I am ok with that. LOL

I did a 14 miler last Sunday and it felt great - especially since the temps were a lot cooler than usual - although not like the temps we had at the marathon last year. I notice a big difference in my ability when its cooler compared to the normal south Florida heat. I just have to restructure my training plan as I was supposed to do a half marathon last Sunday but decided against it and did the 14 miler instead - didn't push myself as hard as I would have in an actual race so I don't need to step back on my milage this Sunday like I thought I would. I have to be difficult and combine a mixture of training plans to come up with the miles I am doing each Sunday.

Can't believe January is almost here and there is only 9 weeks left till Goofy. YIKES this year FLEW by

DW and I are walking so we don't have the pressure that many runners seem to express in their desires to PR. We walked a comfortable 13.1 11 days ago in 3:49:04 preparing for the Space Coast in a few weeks. After that is WDW Marathon Weekend and by that time DW will be well under the 3:30 time for the half. I continued on to finish with 28 miles that day so completing a Goofy should not be a problem..

Even though I maintained a 9:34mm average while walking the 8.3 mile portion of W&D, I will intentionally start back in the field for the Full in January. I submitted the time to Disney for Coral placement but don't want to cause a problem since my plan is to only keep a 12:00mm walking pace for the full.

My hat is tipped to all those who are determined to run their best by training hard and long.
