November 5th 2011 Eastern on the Magic

Its after 8 P.M. in Florida right now and the Dream and one Carnival ship are still in port. Theres a tropical depression thats hitting the area right now. I saw 51 MPH wind gusts at the port and terenchial rains. Waves are too high in the ocean to be safe for them to go. As soon as the storm moves on they will head out to sea. They can make up time really easy if needed.
I sur ehope its gone by morning.

Not sure if the ship has left, but it is shockingly calm this morning here. I heard today was going to be just as windy and rainy as the weekend. But the sun is (finallY!) shining and there isn't a breeze stirring.

I'm glad they kept the ship in last night. It was SCARY! My husband and I both said it was worse than some "hurricanes" we've been through. :scared1:

I guess while they were in port they use the land based power. Port Canaveral lost power and the ship went dark about 10pm. I guess the whole ship was dark for 5 or 10 minutes while they got the engines running. That would have been an interesting night!

:rotfl:

Good morning all,
Yes the Dream left port fairly early this morning. Not sure if they will skip Nassau or miss their sea day? It will probably depend on if there is room for them to dock at Nassau the day after they normally do but I bet no excursion will happen. Unless people book a private one, which is easy to do at the port building.
That will be a story to tell when they return.

I am still waiting for one last person to give me an absolute answer for the FE. Then I will send out what should be the final list to everyone.

I will try one more time to contact them, if I dont hear back in 48 hours I will go ahead and send it out anyway so everyone will have what should be the final count.

but it also shows that Disney cares more about your safety than your excursions. Which is one of the things that made us choose Disney. They at least appear to know what they are doing when the poop hits the fan.

As for the age for kids, we are bringing at 3 and an 19month old. We will see what happens. I know they won't remember it but we will have pictures....lots of pictures!

Yes they are BIG on safety. They have changed ports or missed ports many times due to safety issues. We have missed Grand Caymen just because the waves were a bit rough for the tender boats. They said they could make it in ok but by afternoon when people would be coming back it might be too dangerous. So they cancelled.

What I dont like when this happens is always a few people who are right up in the faces of the people at guest services griping and complaining. Demanding money back because they missed a port. Its in your contract that at the Captains desgession he can change ports at any time.
Instead of being grateful they can feel safe, knowing they are about safety on the ship.
Of course if they did go and someone slide across the room and fell down the same few would be the first to complain that Disney put them in danger and want to sue them for a sprained ankle.:lmao:

I think if you are taking a cruise you expect that there might have to be contingency plans. Disney is magical but they can't control the weather. I am still saying prayers that all the tropical weather dies off by 11/2 and we have clear sailing and perfect weather for our cruise.

Hope everyone is having a great Monday!

We love to travel, and we started traveling with our first born when he was 6 months old... we travelled a lot, and did so many things (we did not go on a cruise, mostly because at that time in our lives, we didn't know we'd enjoy a cruise! :confused3). But, even though the kids won't remember, you are right... you just take so many pictures, and it's the memories the parents get to share and keep!!! :) I have so many fond memories of when our kids were really little and traveling with them.

But, the kids really don't start remembering until later than you'd think! At least our kids are that way. Like, for example, we went to Aruba for 2 weeks when our boys were 4 and 6 years old. Our 4 year old has no recollection of Aruba! Our 6 year old vaguely remembers a couple things, but he doesn't remember it was Aruba... he just have a few specific memories of "this one trip".

It wasn't until our boys were like 7 & 9 that they really started to remember the trips we took and things we did. I mean, if I jog their memory and say, "remember when you were 5 and we did this....", and they kind of remember.

But, every kid is so different.... I have a friend who has strong memories from when she was 3 years old of trips she and her family did.

It'll be great to be on the cruise with your 3 year old and 19 month old!!!! I mean, just seeing the excitement in their faces is going to just make everything so much more amazing. :) That is one reason we chose to travel with our kids so young....because even though we knew they wouldn't remember it, we knew they'd enjoy it at the moment, and DH and I would have those memories. :)

And here I am at a lowly 83 posts....I guess I should just quit my job and start posting :) That would be sweet!!

Maybe I will be low on the totem poll with only 100 posts?

Man you guys have been busy!! I haven't been on much, been swamped at work and we've all been passing a cold/flu thing back and forth around the house. Better to get it out of the way now before the cruise!! The weather has been all over the place here in Pittsburgh (wtgilligan is well aware I'm sure). One day we have a high of 50, the next is 80, then back down so I'm sure that had something to do with it. We've had a good stretch of summer weather the past week or so, high today of 82?!?! Rode the motorcycle to work today. :thumbsup2

Same thing going on here, my younger two are 4 and 23 months. I bought a couple extra micro sd cards for the DSLR so I probably won't be seen much without the camera!

2Ksilverbullet, we will have to catch up on the cruise for sure.

The weather here is insane this week. but it was good for the car show near me yesterday. and for family coming to visit but yes, my whole house is sick. At least it is gone now and not on the cruise.

Sounds good, we can talk nerdy technology stuff over a Pens game. I'm up to my eyeballs in gadgets (having kids allows me to have multiple devices that do the same thing! (insert evil laugh)), currently waiting for the Galaxy Nexus (Prime) on VZW. :thumbsup2

That'd be great. I just preordered the new iPhone and it will be here by Friday. but I am equally enthralled by all things electronic. I'll have my macbookpro and my phone. Probably not my iPad though. And my DSLR camera around my neck at all times.

Well, you are doing pretty darn good with even taking time to post while having a full time paid job!!!

Hope you all feel better soon!!! That happened here a couple weeks ago... our weather was warm one day, then cold and rainy another, and we all got colds! The fall is just a crazy weather time of year for everyone, I think... it's like the weather can't make up it's mind!

My inlaws were supposed to come visit this week, but as much as we love them, we told them not to come because they both are sick (with head colds, and some slight flu symptoms). I told them we are too close to our cruise to be exposed to that!!!! Which reminds me.... I need to get in and get my flu shot, and also get our kids flu shots!!! I've been dragging my feet on that.

We never used to get flu shots (I just never really felt they worked, because friends who got flu shots still got sick), but once we started going on cruises in the winter, I decided to go ahead and start getting flu shots, and just hope they work, because it's one thing if you get sick going on a non-cruise vacation... you just roll with the punches, and try to enjoy your trip. But, it's another thing if you get the flu just before you go on a cruise!! From what I read in the cruise docs, they can deny your boarding if you have the flu when you arrive to the ship. That would be devastating... so for that reason, I started having our family get flu shots, and none of us have gotten the flu yet, so maybe they really do work!?!!

I think my wife has a Macbook Pro too (I should know, I got it for her!) but it might be too much for me to bring. Sadly I have 4 tablets so I'll be bringing those so everyone has some entertainment on the flight to and from FL. I just picked up a DSLR a few months back so I'm trying to learn me some photography... :lmao: My oldest boy (Nick) has homecoming in a couple weeks so all his buddy's and their dates/gf's are coming over for pictures. Should be interesting. If any of them turn out halfway decent, I'll have to post them up.

Thanks! With 7 people in my house (MIL lives with us as well), when one person gets sick, I'm usually making a stop on the way home for meds because we know the rest of us are gonna get it eventually. We're doing good though, suprisingly, so far my wife and I have had it the worst. I dropped my 4 year old off at school/daycare last Wed., called work and went home and took a 5 hour nap on the couch. All is well now though, just some sniffles from the younger kids (I wish they'd learn to blow OUT instead of in when I tell them to blow their nose).. ha ha.

I agree that Disney is all about safety first, and that is one thing that is so appealing to us about this cruiseline (among many other things!).

I'm one of those (probably out of the ordinary) people who gets a little excited when things don't go the way I had planned or hoped... I guess it means that I'm up for a little unexpected/unkown adventure and so there is some excitement in that for me.

But, my DH and I have talked about this... why there are some people who do get really upset when Disney chooses to skip a port for weather/safety reasons, or just something happens out of everyone's control, and this is just my guess, but I think there are some people (probably a lot of people, actually) who can only afford to go on a vacation like this once in several years, or maybe they have a job where they don't have the ability to take time off, except once in several years, so for some, the cruise truly is a trip of a life-time (not that it ISN'T a trip of a lifetime for those who do cruise often or vacation often), but I'd imagine for those who can only travel due to finances or life circumstances once every several or many years, it IS truly a trip of a life-time. So, then, I would imagine if something goes wrong on that trip that in those people's minds was supposed to be "perfect" because they won't get this opportunity for another several years, I am guessing those might be some of the people who are complaining... but I could be totaly wrong!!! It's just a guess on my part. And, though I don't think complaining gets you anywhere and doesn't solve any problems or change any situation, if some of the people who compain are those in the category I mentioned above, I can see a bit why they'd feel let down or jipped.

But, I'm sure there are also a handful of people who vacation all the time and cruise all the time, and still find things to complain about on every single trip, and are the ones who are first to be at guest services breathing down their throat how this is not the vacation they signed up for!! Yes, there are always those people, and those people I do not understand, really. But, oh well.. every man/woman to his/her own, I guess.

For me (and our family), I do of course hope the whole trip goes off without a hitch and all goes perfectly, but just being on the Disney Ship for me is good enough to put me in totally great spirits the entire trip regardless of bad weather, or missing a port.... or for me... getting injured!!! :rotfl: :scared1: Again, I think it goes to the "cup is half-full" vs "cup is half-empty" mentality, and there are both mentalities cruising on each and every cruise. :)

I was watching it on the wecam until I had to go to work!! Everything looked fine and I look on here today and Bam!! They were stuck in port!! :scared1: I really hope Mother Nature is nice to us on November 5th! :worship:

But to answer the previouse question about my favorite Disney Memory...hmmm  it would probably be the day I convinced my parents to go on a Disney Cruise!! (It took me 3 years from the time I found out they existed) It was a lot of whinning :sad2: and sad faces, telling my parents they will love love love and they have been on a Disney Cruise every year since then! :woohoo:

My other favorite memory was in WDW at the AK, we went on Kali River Rapids like 5 times and barely got wet!! My mother was so happy because she hates getting wet but went on because well she had no choice!!! Well we made her go on one more time and hehehe she was the only one who got soaked!!! :laundy: Hehe she gave us an evil look and all we could do was laugh! :lmao: She found it a little funny too!!

I love Disney! and I can't wait to show my boyfriend he doesn't know what he is missing!

I'll be back!
