Novel for 7th Grader

Wow:) Thanks everyone! While she has read alot of these books already (The Giver was her summer assignment and she is currently reading the Outsiders) I was able to come up with a list for her to check out:

Esperenza Rising (think she may have read this already though)
Tiger Eyes
Speak
What My Mother Doesn't Know
The Hunger Games

and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and To Kill a Mockingbird (both classics and most likely to be assigned but hey, if she has to read them twice, so be it, lol).

Thanks again. I'll let you know what she picks. Brenda

another mother of a voracious reader who is in 7th grade!

Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin

Meg Cabot's books
The Mediator (is the one right here!)

Peter and the Sword of Mercy JUST came out - by Dave Barry (book 4 in the series!!)

Marked by P C Cast and Kristin Cast

Willow by Julia Hoban

I'd Tell you I love you but then I'd have to Kill you by Ally Carter (284 pg)

These are just the books under the coffee table!!

she did NOT like the Cirque du Freak book by Darren Shan that is just coming out Friday at the theatre - its a series - at least 7 books? But when I subbed the teacher was reading it outloud and the class seemed to be enjoying it (many had checked it out from the library!!)

I will agree that Hunger Games and Catching Fire are extremely hot with 7th graders right now. I heard about them so much from my DS who is in 7th grade that I ended up reading them myself. They are very good books! I am ready for the 3rd one to come out but I don't think it comes out until late next year.

If she wants something more Contemporary I've read all these recently and thought they were pretty good. :)

My 12 year old DD has read all of these books and loved them all. She ranked the books -

1. Hunger Games
2. THe Book Thief
3. Graceling

My DD11 (12 in Nov) has recently discovered Lauren Myracle who is kind of like a modern day Judy Blume. She's read Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen which are teen/tween coming of age stories dealing with middle school social issues and puberty. She also has several critically acclaimed books geared towards older students that deal with more serious social issues. DD11 has not read these yet.

My DD, now 15, LOVED Lauren Myracle books. As a matter of fact...after DD's 3rd grade teacher SUCKED the love of reading right out of her, it took a Lauren Myracle book (either TTYL, or TTFN or l8r, g8r) to get her to read "for fun." DD went on to read many books by Lauren Myracle. Lauren was wonderful, and for a month or so, DD and Lauren corresponded by e-mail.

OMG- i just remembered, when i was in 7th grade the absolute MUST READ BOOK and it's still considered a must read (and reread and reread) by many kids that grade-'the outsiders' by s.e. hinton. it's a great read and the fact the author was 15 when she started it, 16 when it was published just makes it even more appealing to that age group.

That is a great idea. The Outsiders is an excellent book.
How about The Diary of Anne Frank?

My dd13 read Speak the summer before 7th grade, and it was probably her favorite book so far. I read it too, and coming from a book snob, it was a great read. It is about a teenaged girl who is raped, but it was very middle school age appropriate.

The year before last, this was a requirement for all rising freshman to be read during the summer.

James Patterson writes some teenage type books. My son had to read "The Angel Experiment" over the summer. He enjoyed it. He has a couple of other things too.

I didn't read the whole thread, so hope I'm not repeating. If she is a Disney fan, she might like The Kingdom Keepers (A Small World will never be the same for me again...:scared1:). DD is in 6th and she is reading it right now.

Also, I know it is a movie, but if she has never read the Wizard of Oz you can suggest it. It is very different from the movie. The book is way more 'gory' in my opinion. Not all sunny like the movie.

Frindle by Clement is good, but might be below her reading level.

Number the Stars by Louis Lowry. Takes place during WWII in Denmark. About a girl and her family who help their Jewish neighbors escape to safety.

this one is available as a free EBook download at B&N!!!! (so I would imagine it would be at Amazon) I haven't got to it yet though. I think they are starting to offer first books in a series free to get you interested in the rest!

The "Marked" Series...I started to read book one (Before DD could) and was not far into it when it mentioned an oral sex act..I am a huge prude, I guess. I didn't read too much further and decided DD could wait a couple years. Everyone has to make up their own mind on these things, but I thoughT I would mention it. DD just turned 12, but is in sixth.

Frindle is 3rd grade reading level. Number the Stars is technically a 4.5 reading level book. I did teach it last year to group of 6th graders that were "behind". Both of those books are very low for 12 year old that is a reader.

This is our list for Battle of the Books - 7th and 8th grade level this year:

Airborn Kenneth Oppel
Chasing Vermeer Blue Balliett
Fever 1793 Laurie Halse Anderson
Hidden Talents David Lubar
Stargirl Jerry Spinelli
Tangerine Edward Bloor
The City of Ember Jeanne DuPrau
The Giver Lois Lowry
The Lightning Thief Rick Riordan
Uglies Scott Westerfeld

Good luck, hope it helps!

THats the 7th /8th grade list.. my daughter had Chasing Vermeer and Fever 1793 on her 5th grade list a few years ago. I taught Fever to 5th graders last year. Tangerine was a book I taught in another district in 6th grade.. the kids liked it. Hidden Talents is a summer reading requirement book for rising 6th graders in my district.

Fever is a bit of a drag for some kids. My Fever class went on forever so I wouldn't really recommend it unless you can tie it in with history somehow to keep them interested.

The Giver is a 7th grade book in my district. I have a whole unit plan on that one.

There is a DISer who writes some pretty awesome books. Her name is Heather Brewer and the first three books in the series (The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod) are: Eight Grade Bites, Ninth Grade Slays, and Tenth Grade Bleeds. My DS15 loves them and my DS10 has read the first one and loved it as well. (I also read all three and liked them a lot)

My 13 yr. old daughter LOVED the Vlad series. I did as well. I felt it was the "Anti-Edward" vampire. I didn't know that Heather Brewer is a DISer... If she is reading, she has two Minions here!

We met Heather at a book signing for the last one in Michigan. DH and I gave up free concert tickets to take our son and then drove over 5 hours. He ended up winning a hoodie, as did our DD7. They are like the one on the front cover of the first book.
