we are thinking of renting a cottage somewhere in either NS or NB next summer. Or maybe even a resort. Anyone have any suggestions of what area's we should be looking at, what to do, where to go , what to see?? The 'don't miss it's' that we should make sure we schedule in? We've never been to this side of Canada so it's time the kids saw it.
We will be taking gramma and papa with us and the kids will be 14yo and 8.5yo when we go and have already expressed interest in going whale watching and for a round of golf
Does someone have any recommendations for me??

Of course, I am going to say Shediac, NB because we live there...

It's the most visited place in New Brunswick because we have Parlee Beach that has the warmest Salt Water Beach north of Virginia. We are also within day trip distance from anywhere on PEI.

We are 20 minutes to Moncton, 20 minutes to Bouctouche where the Dunes and Pays de la Sagouine are and 50 minutes to Fundy and the Hopewell Rocks (highest tides in the world) are.

Let me know if I can help...

What week are you looking for? I can also help to get the most for your $$$ and avoid the biggest crowds.

Amazing pictures!!
We are thinking we will do this the last week of July leading into the Civic holiday weekend. That will give us thurs night and all day Friday/Sat to drive there so we can take our time and have shorter driving days and see some stuff along the way. Sat to probably Fri or Sat there then plenty of time to get home too.

Kids are older (will be 14 and 8.5yo) and for sure have expressed interest in going on a whale watching tour and dh wants us all to go golfing one day  .... told him we could do that here and he whined so must be a kid friendly golf course as the 8.5yo would have a fit if he couldn't golf - he's his daddy's boy and he'll have a job that he can tell people what to do and go golfing when he grows up for sure!!

Not sure if we are better to do a cottage or hotels so we can go from one place to another - the IL's are coming with us (will be 6 of us) and we were planning on paying for their accomodation as they don't have alot of $$ to spend!

Well...you picked the busiest week of the year...:scared:

A lot of people like to do a cottage and then do day trips from there. It's what we do on vacation as well.

If you go to too many places, you just spend the days driving.

We have a place here that does fishing and lobster cruises.

A lot of people from Quebec have the last week of July and the first week of August off from work (Semaines de la construction) It used to be the last 2 weeks of July but it is nuts when they invade the maritimes for those 2 weeks.

I guess it wasn't the best week to choose but we didn't want to come at the beginning of summer and by tying it in with the civic holiday we are buying ourselves 1 more day without having to take another vacation day.

Do you have any suggestions on cottages? or do you suggest we just do hotels? I found lots on cottagelink.com but am not sure of the area's they are in!

My Grand-Maman and Grand-Papa (grandparents) used to take me to this really great beach that was close to Tracadie. I have lots of wonderful memories there...for the life of me I cannot remember the name of it. Maybe PhotobearSam knows?

The only reputable way to look for cottages is to go to the NB Tourism web-site and go from there. It's the only way to make sure you will have a quality licence property. If you don't, you could end up in a dump with little to no recourse.

I will give you my honest opinions of anything you want. You can also PM me if you have any specific questions.

You'll see why if you pm me...

Maybe Val-Comeau???

I vote for Shediac as well.... it's simply gorgeous.

Maybe Val-Comeau???

I finally called my Dad to find out. It wasn't Val Comeau but close to there he said it was just a beach it had no name as their is miles and miles of it and we just went in on a side road and staked a spot. We used to have huge family parties with a clambake and Grand-Papa playing the guitar and singing till very late in the evening.

SOUNDS AMAZING!

Just putting my word in for visiting Moncton.
If you do decide to go to visit Moncton (assuming that you'd be staying Shediac), then Magic Mountain (water park) would probably be great and fun for your kids. Possibly not for gramma and papa though ;]

As for cottages, Grand Lake (close to Minto, and not too far from Fredericton) is awfully beautiful and nice. Not sure if too many people rent out there though.

I know that everyone on this thread seems to be recommending Shediac but can I please put in a vote for Cape Breton! If you go up into the highlands, not only is it absolutely gorgeous, but you can go whale watching as well. It's never too crowded and there are lots of wonderful places to stay. If you decide to go that route, I can give you lots of information.

They are fighting words Photobear!!! . .(Coming from a wife of a lobster fisherman!)I think The Municipality of Barrington in Nova Scotia may debate that as they lay claim to "also" being the lobster capital of Canada.

Where are my fellow N'Sers...leaving it to an Aussie to promote Nova Scotia...I vote Nova Scotia a great place to visit.

BUT...I HAVE PROOF:woohoo:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shediac

and I quote...
ituated on Shediac Bay, a sub-basin of the Northumberland Strait, the town calls itself the "Lobster Capital of the World" and hosts an annual festival every July which promotes its ties to lobster fishing; the largest lobster sculpture in the world is situated at the western entrance to the town.

Hahaha...your proof is wikipedia. :) (Not that I don't believe you . . .)

Another vote for Cape Breton! We spend a week every year (or most every year at MacLeod's Campground in Inverness....gorgeous! They have cottages too. Check out their website at www.macleods.com.

Or in my own home area (Annapolis Valley) check out Evangeline Beach!

Or Pictou! You could vacation there for a few nights, catch the ferry and do a few nights in Prince Edward Island!

So much to choose from :)

We've already booked our cottage for a week next summer - on the Bluff in Shediac. My mom was born in Grand Digue, so it's like going home. I can't wait!!
