So how does one handle having two contracts that can be deeded to two children but they have significantly different expiration dates??

By any chance, is one of your children 12 or 15 years older than the other one?

You might could give the 2042 to the older child and the 2054/2057 to the younger child so that they both run out of DVC at near the same age.

Other than that, I don't know. Maybe you'll get lucky and get an extension.
