When I was student teaching, the guidance counselor was doing a lesson in the class I was in (1st grade) and he asked the kids to think of something that made them sad. Kids were sharing different things like, when your friend is mean to you, when you fall down and cut your knees, and other innocent little things. One girl raised her hand and said, "When my mother goes to jail"
I didn't know at that time, but her mother was in fact in jail and she was living with her grandmother. The other kids, none of whom had any family members that were in jail that we knew of, started raising their hands saying, "When your uncle goes to jail, when your brother goes to jail..." They had no idea that she was serious. Kids just copy other kids ideas sometimes when they can't think of something but they want to share.
