Not staying on-site

It seems like everyone here is only staying on site. Our family is going to be in Orlando 8/20-8/27 staying in a timeshare (so essentially free). My plan was to get the ~$300 UCT 14 day pass to US/IOS, SW, WetnWild. But I am getting very nervous because I feel like we won't enjoy without the Express Pass. Talk me in our out of getting a room at US! And let me know how can I do it most cost effectively. SW for 1 day is a must. My kids are 9 & 11 and we are on site DVC WDW veteranS, this is our first time to the 'dark side' lol!

We took an overnight bag and stayed 1 night at Royal Pacific Resort so we had Express Pass for day of check in and day of check out. To me it was worth the $300 room for 1 night. It was cheaper than buying 4 express passes for both days there. It was really nice that first day there to be able to go to our room about 3 and take a nap as we were all exhausted. We had supper at 5 and were back at the park by 6. It worked out great for us.
