Not really impressed

Don't always assume the airbnb reviews from travelers or site photos are correct. We ended up in Edinburgh flat which looked amazing in photos and reviews from travelers were good. But oh my, it was disgusting bathroom, and pull out couch - ugh. There was 5 of us, price ended up $325 per night, so really could not move during high season. No choice, location was the only good thing. And wifi did not work at all. After this trip, I hesitate with airbnb overseas. Do not trust the reviews or site photos. It really impacted my enjoyment of the trip, the first post covid trip.

If I could upload the photos you could see why I was really disappointed/disgusted.

We filed complaint just to get some of the money back because we had to use data to make arrangements, but airbnb denied our claim. I posted my honest review, but I don't trust it anymore.

I would be a little disgusted by the venice accomodations too, sorry....
No doubt it can happen -kind of the risk you take. Surprised they declined your claim entirely -good to know. So far, so good for me …most places have exceeded my expectations. I look for at least 50 reviews minimum and place more weight on the recent ones. I’m sure sooner or later I’ll get a dud but I’ve been overseas a half dozen times and will usually book a hotel if nothing catches my eye In the right location.

Kind of reminds me of a motel I once stayed at in rural Pennsylvania. I thought I would be taken out by a serial killer it was so bad. I suggest leaving if you can, go in debt for a night or two at a decent place. I don't think you will regret it. You've experienced the "sucky hotel but good travel story" part and now GET THE HECK OUT OF DODGE

Well, I am on a whirlwind vacation in Venice and I have to say, the place, the people, the culture, the food... all amazing.

Not so much by room.

Mould. Grime. Dirt. Mildew. Light fixtures hanging off the ceiling. Garden furniture INSIDE. Empty, disconnected minibar. Toilet IN THE BEDROOM. No-one manning reception after 3PM. It's pretty disgusting.

Fortunately I'll be spending my time out and about or I'd be pretty disgusted! Ah well. You get what you pay for!
:scared:Is this nasty place a hotel or some sort of homestay? I'd love to google the property and see how it markets itself.

Sorry to hear that. I agree with you, I loved almost everything about Venice, but I even loved our hotel, Palazzo Paruta. The only thing I didn't love was the Gondola ride. It's knock your socks off expensive and pretty cheesy, but it's run by the gondola mafia so...

Ah well, chalk it up to experience. Found a bed bug on my final night. No-one on reception to complain to the following morning, just a note on the desk saying, leave keys here. I'll write up a review for key websites when I have time, but for now, I'll just snuggle up, safe and sound, at home, in a warm, comfy bed with real pillows :)

Just make sure you didn’t bring the bedbugs home. . .

To chalk it all off, I missed the waterbus, so was late to the airport, where in a rush I tripped and fell, breaking my foot. Oh, and I nabbed a look in an alternate room in the "hotel"... talk about lap of luxury! I was one of only two rooms in an annex. Looks like I landed the stinker.

BUT. You get what you pay for!

You guys in Las Vegas don't know how good you have it! Next holiday, I'm going there. I've been several times and every time the room has been CHEAPER than my trip this last week, WAY more comfortable, had a mini fridge, room service, transport, and you are treated like ROYALTY.

Viva Las Vegas!

Ooof....I give you credit for sticking it out. I would have bailed for sure. It sounds like you enjoyed Venice though for the most part, so that's good. Last time we splurged on a 5 star that was "only" around $600 a night, which wasn't too bad for that level. Londra Palace Venezia right on the Grand Canal....very nice and an amazing view. We also stayed at a four star near the Rialto Bridge...Hotel A La Commedia...for about $400 a night...nice and clean.

Check your clothing and luggage, bed bugs travel very well and often. You may need to wash your clothes with bleach.

I love the A La Commedia - cute rooftop bar, perfect for nighttime drinks and situated in a great location :)

I thought the same thing after seeing the pics of the hotel.....I'd be terrified that bedbugs were coming home with me.
Years ago, I owned a small community care home. I was licensed for 15 clients. One day we took in a new client and it turned out that he had come from a place that had bed bugs. He brought a bunch of them with him and infested my building. I had to trash every cloth covered chair and carpet, throw away 15 mattresses and box springs. Wash every article of clothing in the place, every sheet and pillow case as well as throw away the pillows. After that was done I needed to find a place to temporarily place my clients while the building was tented and fogged. It got rid of them but I never really recovered from that expense.

Ugh...what a nightmare. And honestly, bedbugs can be in nicer looking hotels than the one our poor OP is staying at right now.

That is absolutely true, my place wasn't a palace but it was clean. I even had an employee that threatened to sue me due to the place being dirty and having bugs. I fired back that I paid them to keep it clean so if it wasn't I guess they should sue themselves. Never heard about it again. Besides the health department made that same comment about how bed bugs were not introduced because of dirt, they just look for warm bodies to feed themselves and like the hitchhiking ghosts they hitch a ride from place to place.

What is the name of the hotel?

Al Canal Regio.

Review:

Well that was regrettable.

I just dropped the best part of £1,000 on a supposedly luxury week's stay in Venice and EVERYTHING went wrong.

I alighted at the airport and boarded the water bus - so far so good. But then things went awry. Following the directions stipulated by the hotel, I was soon lost. Getting dark, I was adopted by some good samaritans, who had never heard of the hotel. After 5 hours of slogging all over Venice, I found my way - finally - to the hotel, basically a door in the wall in a back alley with a small sign. I wondered in and found the reception, unmanned, with my key waiting and a letter saying welcome. OK, odd, but, what the hey. Problem - where is my room? Turns out I was in an annex, separate from the main hotel. Again, no biggie, just strange. Got access to my room and my spirits fell.

Talk about basic. I had two rooms - a living room and a bedroom. The living room sported a table and chairs, all garden furniture. There was a sink, a hob (grimy, missing hob caps), some cabinets (filthy) and a black sofa that ate you. One very small window and cruddy lighting, with the bulbs hanging loose from the ceiling. I'm sorry, it was disgusting. Contained a toilet unit with doors that didn't close properly.

Enter the bedroom. One double bed, one single. I accidentally bashed the single with my shin, and it collapsed. Weird right? Three lights - a neon wall light and two bed lamps, one bust. Beds had the most Godawful mattresses, hard as bricks. Single sheets only, so I played a trick - I doubled up the main bed sheet by folding it over and added the sheets from the single bed, revealing a bug on the smaller mattress. Eww. Another toilet unit, shower pump at shin level. Godawful.

I decided to go exploring, cheer myself up. More fool me, I forgot my key. I doubled back and found that the door to the hotel at 8PM was locked. Press the buzzer, no help, no response. Thank God for yet more good samaritans, who were coming out, giving me access to the reception. Not manned, of course. Just two phone numbers to call in an emergency. Tried the first one several times - no answer. Tried the second one and got through to someone, who informed me that a key to a different room would still work in mine. Odd. But at least I got back in my room. I must say, I was terrified having to sleep rough for the night until the staff reappeared in the morning.

Had a go at trying to get some sleep, but the bed was so harsh and uncomfy I just couldn't. Tried using the air con unit to pump out some warm air, all the way to 28°C, no luck. Turned on the 13" computer monitor/TV to reveal five or so channels, two of which were radio stations.

Tried to drown my sorrows in breakfast the next day. Unmanned breakfast room, empty of people. Toaster, no bread. Cereal, apparently no milk. Basic rolls. Couple of pigeons of all things having the time of their lives.

Would I go back? Hell no. Sorry. The quality of the room et al combined with the high price was unforgivable. I will be saving up more and staying at a nicer hotel next time.

Oh my. That looks like a nice hotel! Looks can be deceiving.
It looks like it is owned by a company that you should be able to contact about your stay (Graspodeua?)
