Not Impressed with New Publix

Reading another post reminded me of a negative experience I had at the new Publix on Vineland (Ave. I think) a couple miles outside of DTD (about 2 weeks ago). I went their on the Sunday evening we checked in. I only needed fruit, cheese and milk, but figured I'd try this new store, which I had read about on these boards.

Sadly, the produce selection was very poor. No bananas, 2 bags of squashed grapes and a poor selection of other fruits. This surprised me, as I generally like Publix (I have frequented the one on 192 near 27 and went into the new one at Champions gate - Exit 53 (I think) on I4).

Granted, this may have been isolated and I may still try this Publix again, but I ended up going back to the crossroads and overpaying for produce at Goodings. That said, the quality was excellent.

I'm curious if others have tried out this store and had better results recently.

I agree - won't be going back there. Found the new Winn-Dixie a little north of Crossroads in LVB - much nicer.

We were not impressed with the new Publix either when we were at OKW this summer. We made a point of going to Albertson's when we needed some additional items later in our stay. Albertson's is a clear favorite for us and the one we'll use during future trips. I have to say that, although we'd been to Winn-Dixie during other stays, we haven't tried the one closest to DTD. Sounds like it might be worth a try, though.

We went to the new Winn-Dixie and became "seasonal residents" when we filled out the Winn-Dixie card application. (I haven't stopped talking about it since I had to check the box. It is either "season" or "permenant", no other choices) I liked it enough. No bad smells coming from any corners, fairly well stocked (except sale items were slim pickings, but that is to be expected) and the cashier was very friendly. It wasn't the Meijer store that I am used to, but more along the lines of the independant groceries that we have here at home. It fit the bill for what we needed and there is a liquier store right infront of the parkinglot.

We usually go to the store by DTD...I forget the name...I just know where it is

Joe -

That's Goodings in the Crossings, directly across the street from the entrance by DTD.

Another vote for the Winn Dixie - I used to hit Albertsons til it opened up. Never really a big Publix fan

Another vote for the Winn Dixie. We used it this summer and really liked it. Fresh produce, decent selections, decent prices (got my seasonal card) and it was clean and new. The staff was very pleasant and helpful.

Well we are going to buy Orange Marmelade at a Publix. We can't come home without it. I hope we won't have to go to too many stores for our other groceries.

OK - what's up with this seasonal card thing. Are you talking about their "little frequent shopper" (for lack of better words) thingy?

You probably read my post New Yawka! ;)

We were *just* there, and the Publix was very nice, they had a very good produce selection, nothing like you're describing. My only theory to toss out is maybe it was just too new at that point? Even now in October, it still looks like they just built it, so you must have been there not much after it opened, they might not have had the whole stocking thing settled down yet.

Also had a very wide selection of other products(they have an exellent sweet iced tea), on par with Albertsons/Jewel, even found items we only subscribed to Goodings having in the past.

I figure you are correct about the whole "re-stocking" thing. That is why I said I may yet go there again. I just figured it would be of value to let people know that they should not fully expect an excellent experience if they go there in the near term. I am, as stated, a fan of Publix and will continue to patronize them.

As there are more and more grocery options for us DVCrs, we should not be expected to settle for less than an enjoyable experience ;)

Joe in CT,

It must be a CT thing. ;) I'm with you. We always shop at Goodings. Compared to CT prices, it doesn't seem to be overpriced and it's kind of a WDW "tradition" to stop there for our snacks. :) Compared to the WDW resort prices, it's still a bargain. :teeth:

Now fellas, prices are high here in CT but Gooding's gets carried away. ;)

I agree that if you aren't doing a major shop and/or compare it to Disney prices, that it is convenient, has lots of nice pre-made items and is fun. But prices are high. Of course, I only wish I had such a nice store here in lower Fairfield County.
