Hello, I know this is not a Disney Dining question, but we are going to Seaworld one day this trip my DD wants to see Whales and polar bears. Has anyone had dinner with Shamu the Buffet at the Harbour? If so is it worth the $38 and 19 for children. My Dh thinks it looks awesome but I don't know how close you get to the whales or what they do that special. Thank you in Advance.

The food is buffet, and from what I remember (3 year ago), it was adequate.

You get a more up close look at the whales and hear from a trainer. We had a table in the front row right along the side of the "pool".

I had not ever really thought about doing it again, but DD and I walked past there the other evening, and she said -that was fun... can we do it again? So I guess we will be doing it again sometime soon!

The polar bears can be seen (if they aren't sleeping) in the "Base Station" after the Wild Artic ride. We caught one of them "pacing" the other evening.. I thnk he was telling everyone to go home, so he could have some "me" time. It was almost closing!

You can also see a beluga whale, harbor (I think) seal and walrus (really really big).
Enjoy Sea World. We love it there!

We went last April. The food was mediocre at best and it was a buffet which is good because it gets wet from the show.We were seated next to the pool and Shamu and the others came about 3-4 feet from the table. We got some great pics. The show was fun and the kids enjoyed it but it was pretty expensive so I dont think we will do it again. We did lunch at the shark underwater grill and that was awesome. It is expensive but they have pizza on the appetizer menu and kids meals which came with some cool shark toys and a cup and holder. The waitress suggested pizzas and a salad and a kids meal so it was very reasonable. There is an entire wall of glass and we saw divers and sharks during our meal. The kids get a picture key and try to spot as many different ones as possible. That was cool and actually a bigger hit with the kids than the Shamu dinner!

We did this a few years back at Sea World San Diego, it wasn't great. I mean it was definitely different and cool to eat by Shamu but the food wasn't very good, paper plates and plastic cups. The system they had for getting in the park early was poor, we waited a long time. It wasn't anything we would do again.

We did Dine with Shamu last May and it was the highlight of our boys' trip. I thought the quality of food was very good for a buffet, I'd put it right on par with Crystal Palace at WDW. We were in the front row also, and didn't have any problem with our food getting wet. The whales came up to a trainer right in front of us on the side of the pool and we got some great pictures, but they didn't do any jumps or anything by the seating area.

In my opinion it was well worth it for the price (plus it includes complimentary Anheuser-Busch products if you care to enjoy an adult beverage :drinking1 ), and we'll do it again next time we go back.

We dined with Shamu today. Actually it wasn't Shamu at all. None of them are actually named Shamu. We learned some very interesting things about killer whales. There were 2 whales in the tank by the dining area with their trainers. Then there was another trainer who had a microphone and was giving us information about the whales. They didn't do their fanciest tricks like you see in the stadium show. It's much more of an intimate setting. But it was neat to be so close to them, at one point literally 5 feet from the oldest and biggest killer whale in any marine habitat in the world. This thing was like 22 feet long and weighed 12,000 pounds.

The food was overall pretty good, although pricey. There was chicken tortilla soup, rolls with butter, turkey, garlic mashed potatoes, pasta primavera, vegetables, and a few other things I can't remember. There was also a separate kids buffet that had chicken, macaroni and cheese, corn, hot dogs, spaghetti and fruit. They also had many desserts to choose from and water and Pepsi pitchers on the table. But you could order beer or another soft drink from your server. The whole thing lasted about an hour.

We enjoyed it and thought it was very interesting, but will probably skip it next time just for the cost issue.

By the way, they are totalling re-doing the Shamu show into something more like Blue Horizons (dolphin show). The set is under construction right now with a huge tail fluke in the center. The show will be called "Believe" and will have it's own orchestra soundtrack and choreographed and new behaviors from the whales and their trainers. The trainers spoke of it a little today and said they were going to integrate more audience involvement in the show. It sounded fabulous and is supposed to open in May.

Now I have to schedule a day during our Disney trip in October to go back to SeaWorld just to see this show!!

Thanks Shannonrt, I think it might be worth doing because the whales are my favorite animal. Sounds really cool. How was Discovery Cove? I have always wanted to go there but my kids are too little to really enjoy it yet. DD 6 might like it, but I want to do the Dolphin swim and I don't think she is old enough yet. Your from Knoxville, thats funny we live in Lenoir City. Thanks for the info.

You're welcome. Discovery Cove was awesome. My DD is 10 though and was old enough to enjoy the dolphin swim. You may want to wait a few years.

Funny that you're so close by us. Also looks like from your ticker that we'll be at Disney at almost the same time in October!

I thought SeaWorld's 'Under the Sea' restaurant was much better than WDW's Coral Seas. I think in the shark tank pavillion there?

We are going during fall break which is Oct 8-13. We are leaving just a few days early on Oct 4 so we can get a better rate at Polynesian. I guess we wait until another visit for Discovery cove so at least DD can do the dolphin swim. I did the swim in the bahamas in 1999 and it was great, but I think DC looks really nice.

That's interesting. Fall Break for Knox County schools is Oct 16-20. I'm so excited to be able to go to Disney in October. Knox County has never had a week-long fall break before!

We are going to Coral Seas in the same trip - is it worth to do both - or overkill? Really it's all about the show I guess, as we'll have already done the "dining in the aquarium" thing. Is the show worth the money, because from what it sounds like the food is pretty theme park average. Also, we will just be there one day, park closes at 7pm. Should we focus our time on the park itself or will we have time for both? Decisions, decisions :confused3 :rotfl:

:fish: :fish: :fish: D.D. just heard about Dining with Shamu ( I already knew) so of course wants to do it. No D.D. isn't a real kid ju8st a kid at heart. How early can you book? I'd love to get the poolside tables and I think someone said the early bird gets the whale , just kiddin'but you get the idea! It is pricey though but the food isn't the main attraction , so not to concerned about the quality as long as its edible. :goodvibes :cool1: :cheer2: :cheer2: :moped:
