Not benefiting from points extension because I booked a new reservation :(

I'm a fairly new member, and I am very dissapointed at the outcome of conversation with DVC Member Services today.

I was originally very excited when I saw that Aug 2020 points were now included in the extension. I had used Aug 2019 points for my trip in April. Well my trip ended up getting cancelled and I didnt understand banking deadlines so I failed to bank on time by a couple days :( I know that's my fault but I also felt I didnt get a good cast member and she didnt inform me of this and I had 24 OTU points which they didnt offer to refund so I still had.

MS told me I would need to use my points, put them into RCI or I would lose them. So I booked a very high point stay in a 1 bedroom VGC villa because it was either that or RCI. Fast forward to now and the rules have changed BUT they are not taking into consideration that this was a previously cancelled reservation they are considering a new reservation. So I get no point extension and no refund of my OTU points. So dissapointed.

So now I either go if it's open, or wait and hope they cancel. I would have been better off putting them in RCI. They are returning those! I feel my punished for keeping my points in the DVC system.

Not sure what to do now but just sharing my frustration and experiencing in case anyone is in the same boat :(

I am so sorry but we have had other reports that members were told this,

While DVC can put whatever rules they want on the extension, I personally believe this one isn’t a good one.

My suggestion is to email DVC about it as members who put points in RCI are getting to call them back...members who had qualified points and booked them before the policy change should still be eligible for a ”do over” which is what they did for RCI.

Does this mean that the DVC resorts Opening on the East Coast determine the viability of reservations, including CA and HI? I'm confused.

Just sent an email and listed the reservations that were cancelled and the points used w 4 different contracts and another contract that used borrowed points to make a reservation for the now cancelled Epcot MM for June. Hoping for the best, since I did stupidly move them last week to the end of July (just in case, there was no reprieve), which I have now cancelled.
@tinkertoes There was a discussion about others in your situation that you might find usefull. Click on the up arrow above to be taken to that thread at the point that discussion started.

Thanks sandiw. I know no one could forsee the pandemic but I just dont feel the love from DVC right now and I know
I made decision to book another stay but I almost felt like I didnt have a choice. I do plan to email them.

@foreUT, I dont believe that they do so I'm still holding out hope that maybe my VGC stay might get cancelled since they havent announced an opening date yet. At that point I hope my points get extended. I have gone to WDW and Aulani on my points but I'm from CA. The easiest thing for me was to book a VGC stay in order to not lose points.

No. If one has a reservation for closed DVC, then as long as it is still closed for the dates of the trip, then they would qualify.

For example, as of today, Aulani is not open...someone with a July 1st reservation who keeps it and Aulani remains closed on that date, then points would be eligible.

Do you think they would open w DL closed? At least in FL there is DS or you can go off-site to Universal. Wishing you good luck in this. It has been a debacle, IMO.

When is the VGC reservation scheduled for? There have been no announcements about a Disneyland (or VGC) opening dates. I am local to DL too. I have a July VGC reservations 7/14 - 7/17 (supposed to be there for Disneyland's 65th birthday) that I am pretty sure will not be happening. I am holding onto the reservations (7/14-7/15 Feb banked points and then 7/15 - 7/17 with Dec banked points) as I would rather let DVC cancel those. And if they are open, I may just go to look at 4 different walls for a few days. I do not see myself going into the parks though.

As far as I have heard, they are pushing DL reservations to mid July but right now I'm doubting they are opening mid July and I guess hoping they dont even though I know many are eager for Disneyland to re-open.

My reservation is for 7/27. I have learned my lesson and will not be cancelling this reservation either. I guess worst case scenario I go and just hang out in my room. I guess there are worst places to be...

If Disneyland is open you will be able to stay at VGC and have a lovely time. Disneyland is great in the summer with the zero rain and warm temperatures but with low humidity. If not, your points will be refunded and extended. Not the most terrible situation ever.

Will you go if open? If not, try to switch it to an earlier date there. Since they haven’t announced an open date, all dates are fair game.

If you would visit then this plan doesn’t work.

I wonder if you can switch it to an open June reservation as that will likely be cancelled. Can't comment on availability here, but you know where to look.

My gut says DL will be open by July 27th, since you're sort of local, you can have a grand ol' time when you go (pun intended).

Third option is to sell the room night to someone.

Goodluck!

The same thing happened to us it was either lose the points or use them and once they decided to extend august use year we called and several CMs said we can cancle and rebook for a later date. Unfortunatley after the CMs cancled are reservations and then had a problem rebooking us she passed us over to a different department saying no your not apart of that group even though are original trip was in April. Now they can not even rebook us for the rooms we originally had after telling us plenty of misleading information.

YAY! Parks and VGC will be open for your dates. A 1 bedroom stay there is so wonderful and even if you limit your park time, it can be such a fun time. Worst case, you could rent it because its a coveted res that will be impossible to get as the extra points head into the system in the next months.

Thanks to some great suggestions on this board I switched my reservation just in time to 7/5. Disney ended cancelling my reservation 3 days later and when I called they let me bank my points :) I do want to go back to Disneyland but I want to wait and see how things are before I go so I'm glad I got things fixed.

I do feel for all those people that thought, like me, they were being proactive. I also feel bad that those that chose to put into RCI are getting better treatment than those that chose to stay in a DVC resort. I sent an email to member sevices and hope that enough of us have are upset about it that they will revisit the issue.

This board is amazing and for all those affected I would continue to check for new information.
