Not allowed to change connecting flight?

I've had great luck changing my connecting flight to an earlier one with American a few times. The reason I didn't book the one I wanted was because it cost a lot more. I've never been able to have them officially chage it pior to departure day, but have been able to ask the agent when I check my bags to be put on standby and they do and then I hurry to the connecting gate of the flight I want and ask again and three times (each time I've asked) over the last 2 yrs. they've been able to accommodate meband get my checked bag on the right flight. Always worth a try, but I don't think theyll officially change your flight until day of.

I just checked and unfortunately there are no longer 2 seats available together in 1st class and I’m unwilling to have my 7 year old sit away from a parent. So, it is what it is at this point. I really just wanted to see if this was actually a thing because it totally caught me off guard.

I suspect this was actually the problem. Phantom availability, you see seats available but in reality they are not available.

As for the agent they needed a reason to tell you why they couldn’t change it and that explanation is more believable- if you don’t know much about booking tickets- than guessing it’s a phantom availability situation. If it had been available there would be no reason for the computer to refuse to change it as even if the price is different Delta would just charge you the difference.

That's weird. Last year I had booked Delta with a layover to get home. I booked it on the Delta website. A few days before I left, I used the app and changed MCO to ATL to a different flight on the same day, and kept ATL to my regional airport. So you can change the first leg but not the second leg? I don't get it.
