Not a fan of AKV, do I have to buy there?

I am trying to convince my DH to buy but I don't want my home resort to be AKV. If I buy through Disney, am I stuck with SSR or can I try for other DVC resorts?
I am keeping my fingers crossed that our timing will coincide with BLT because that seems more our style.

If you don't want AKV or SSR go for the resale market. You'll have your choice of any and all DVC Resorts.

You can also waitlist at any of the existing resorts through Disney, but you would have to buy 160 points and it may take a while to get points, but I would not buy at a resort you didn't love...I keep reading more and more threads about how difficult it can be to book at your non-home resort so make that your #1 priority.

DVC sometimes has points in stock for the other resorts, if they've acquired points through their Right of First Refusal. If not, you can go on a waitlist.

However, VWL, BCV, BWV, Vero and HHI all currently have end dates of 2042. SSR has 2054, AKV and OKW, if purchased through DVC, have end dates of 2057.

My understanding is that there are no promotional pricing incentives available at any resorts except AKV and SSR.

You can purchase whatever resort you would like to, it just depends on how long you want to wait. If you want one of the sold out resorts, I would recommend purchasing resale, since you can get the size contract you want, and will pay less than buying from disney.

I am working on purchasing a 150 pts contract at VWL and am paying $80/pt but no closing costs as that is what I negotiated with the seller. I love VWL because we stayed there at Christmas with my MIL one year and it was amazing! Our plan is to go every Dec so the 11month booking timeframe is important to us.

So I guess I am going to go with the "Buy where you want to stay" motto that a lot of people say. That is what I did.

Don't buy somewhere you don't want to stay....With DVC's popularity I believe the 11mth window will be even more important.

I bought my 1st contract resale through TSS and it went flawless. Since then I added on through Disney....no problem.

We were like you and didn't want AKV (or SSR) so we bought BCV through Disney. It took a few months on a waitlist but it was worth it to have the resort we wanted. Our guide tried to sell us SSR or AKV but once I told her that wasn't going to happen she moved on and helped us get exactly what we wanted. It took 3 months to get our points but it was worth it to get the resort we wanted.

A lot of members, including myself, have had many successful bookings on the 7-month windows for other than our home resorts.

What size of room(s) you want for each trip, how popular each resort is in a given season (which can change over the years, as it did for Food & Wine), become dynamic variables that might be hard to work around without defaulting to your home resort on the 11-month window.

We travel at any time of the year we want, so our flexibility helps. We also love our home resorts, so we are not upset if we don't get BCV every time we try for it.

Despite our flexibility and our success with booking other resorts, I will still say this: Buy a home resort that suits you best. You can't always count on getting what you want at the 7-month windows.

Waiting isn't a problem for us since I still have to convince DH to buy. I'm going in July and will do a tour then, and in January DH and I are going. I am going to book a deluxe resort for a couple of nights, and then a DVC resort using rented points, just so he can see the benefits first-hand. After that, we'll start determining where to buy.

I would love to go to WLV in December each year, so that may end up being our home resort because that ressie is hard to get otherwise. We also like BCV (location, decor) and OKW (for the room size and proximity to golf). And of course, the place-that-must-not-be-named may be perfect for us. Good to know that I have options and choices.

VWL was my first favorite! If you don't own there you will have a problem staying there in Dec. Buy where you want to stay! We bought a resale first at VWL, have since bought 3 other resorts. We have four favorites now. Good luck with your decision.

guess what annoucement might be happening in July....

only DVC members might be able to buy until Sept. So might go look for small contract - 50 points or less at VWL. you can stay at VWL in the first 14 days in Dec - 60 points - sun-thurs (leave on fri). So you will be a member and get BLT - Bay Lake Towers @ CR when sales began - hopefully in July.

now DVC might sell to the public and DVC members at the same time for BLT - there is never a guaranteed with DVC/DVD.

even if sales began in July - this resort won't be finished until late 2009 or early 2010.

Someone posted another thread that said that disney will not be giving current DVC members any privileges to buy first into any new resorts.

Where did you get your current info on this?

My guide just told me that they have no current info on the sale of the new resort. And this is a guide that has been doing sales for a long time. Who is going to want to wait for another year or 2 years to use the new place that they have to buy now? I don't think it will go on sale until next year at some point if it truly is not going to be done until late 2009/2010.

We looked at the AK in January but didn't care for the small/dark rooms so we purchased at OKW.
ZBought directly from Disney and got the 2007 points as well with no maintenance fees for 07

Buy where you want to stay

My partner and I became DVC members last week with our home resort as SSR. While in the "Open House" session we inquired about any availability at the BWV and they informed us they still had some inventory available for sale as of last week, but the end date is much earlier than SSR or AKV and they were not offering any incentives. Hope this helps.

You should buy were you want to stay, but if incentives are important to you, then you have to buy into the current selling locations. While thrilled with SSR, the incentives were important to us at that time (2005/July). With the then current incentive, plus the CM discount we saved $6,000, which made SSR look really good to us. We have since added on additional points for BWV too. So you need to keep that in mind too. Since we never visit during busy times, getting in at the 7 month window has never been a problem for us since buying in. However, we do use the 11 month window and use our BWV points during October.

I'm not a big fan of "buy where you want to stay," but I am a big fan of "Don't buy where you don't want to stay."

Our experience has been that, as long as we're a little flexible and don't travel during peak periods, we are pretty successful getting what we want inside the seven-month window. However, if we want to go during peak times, we're perfectly happy to stay at either OKW or SSR.

If you are planning on visiting during peak DVC booking times, you will need to use your 11-month advantage at your home resort. I would never lock myself into being forced to stay in a resort I don't like.
