My husband is an extreme planner and he is planning our shore excursions for our cruise next June. We have never been on this cruise itenerary and he would like to know how far the docks are from the city, in particular Stockholm, Helsinki, and Tellin. We would like to self explore those ports. Help?

We did DCL port adventures in every port except in St Petersburg, we did a private tour there. But I think only in Tallin you can walk and actually see something good. Every other port you need to see it on an excursion or for example in Stockholm Disney had a Shuttle to take you to the city center.

We did all three of those ports on our own last summer. It is correct that Tallin is very walkable from the port. Helsinki we took a taxi to the Rock Church and then walked back into town and down to the water to see the sights. There was a shuttle, but we scheduled a pretty full day, and did not want to waste any time. Stockholm depends. We docked outside the city and again took a taxi into town. The cruise after us docked downtown where it was easier to walk or take a water taxi. Disney did offer a shuttle here, as well, but we did not want to be held up waiting for a shuttle.

All these ports are easily doable on your own! We had a great day in each of these ports.

Enjoy your cruise!

Tallinn is very walkable from the pier. I can second that there are shuttles to downtown Helsinki and Stockholm. The traffic in Stockholm was crazy and it took probably longer than it should have to get to the drop off point. I think perhaps it was a bit unusual. We did a private food tour of Tallinn which was one of our favorite excursions. We did DCL in Helsinki, to see reindeer. Stockholm we did the DCL Ostermallen market, Old Town, and Vasa museum. It was not that good, very rushed (due to traffic delays) and too short, and we immediately went back into town on the shuttle to enjoy Stockholm more. You could totally do it on your own. Once you are dropped off, everything is in relatively close walking distance.

My parents got Rick Steves Northern European cruises book before their Baltic cruise and I plan to use the same book for ours next summer. He details exactly how to get from the port to the city in each place, how long it takes and how much planning is required. I've visited each of these places before (not on cruises) and I except for St Petersburg I found all these cities to be super safe and easy to get around. It felt like it would be hard to find a local person who didn't speak English!

Has anyone done the CitySightseeing buses? These are the same company as run in other cities and it looks like they do these ports (haven't checked St. Petersburg). We were thinking of doing these. They run to the cruise port.

Did it only In Copenhagen, that's a great way to see it. And free wifi on the bus.

We haven't been to these ports, but can vouch that the city sightseeing buses are a great way to get around and very affordable. We have done them in St. John, New Brunswick and Vancouver and would do them again if available in any port.

hi there -- circling back to this. Question: does the Magic not always dock in the same place in Stockholm? Someone told me we will dock in Frihamnen, but when I saw this post, I wondered if that may not be the case? We are meeting a friend -- a local -- in Stockholm and she asked where we'd be docking. Should i just tell her we're not sure and set up a meeting place in the city?

Thanks!

IMG_0034.PNG We are on the May Northern Europe. The Magic is due to dock at Stadsgarden this cruise, having spent a week in Stockholm last year I'd say that was walkable if you're a healthy adult.

You will need to check the web site of each port authority to be sure. This May, as said, our Stockholm dock is close, but sometimes not.

Interestingly, we are leaving Copenhagen from one place and arriving back to a different one!

I know that is going to be strange!

We haven't taken this cruise yet, but it's one we plan on. Rick Steves has a book called Northern European Cruise Ports which I have already bought in expectation of planning. It covers all of these and is supposed to be an ideal guide for those wanting to do these ports on their own.

The Magic has docked in two different areas in Stockholm. You might try calling Disney to see if they can tel you which one.
