Hi,
My parents are going to HH with us next July. My mom has become very spooked at flying. I know she will fly if we ask but I'd like to keep her comfortable. My DH and I would prefer not to drive. Has anyone used the train to HH? We would take it into Savannah. Once arriving we would get a car. Is there a rental agency nearby? On National I found the only rental is at the airport (National is preferred, but we would try another if we had to). Unfortunately, the Amtrak website is not the best regarding station details/amenities.

In advance, thanks.
Cora

Hi Cora! My Amtrak Timetable shows that rental cars are available at the Savannah station on an "on call" basis. The website states that Hertz is a partner with Amtrak, so you may want to give them a call. (I searched for rental cars on the Amtrak website.)
There is public transportation available, also. Call 912-233-5767 for info.

Have fun!

Do it if you must, but the one time I took the train from Charleston, SC to northern VA wasn't very pleasant.

First, the train takes a long time---longer than driving by the time you add in stops and delays.

Also, the dining car was a smoky mess with people in there playing cards. I was travelling by myself with my dd, age 4, and had to make our visit as short as possible, as it wasn't a place I wanted to be with a young child.

The train station in Charleston was decrepit and scary, not sure that Savannah would be much nicer but it might be (couldn't be much worse I guess!)

I take Amtrak from NY to Disney every year and love it! I unwind for 24 hours before arrival. The motion lulls me to sleep. The dining car does not allow smoking. I relax coming home after the hectic fun at Disney. It's expensive for the sleeper cars but I use American Express Member rewards to defray the cost. Good luck!

I take the train to Disney...I haven't to Savannah. There is no smoking in the dining car. I also love the trip...it is very relaxing. Call the Amtrak 800 number for assistance. Sandie

Ariel and Sandie, I'm curious whether you take regular Amtrak or the Autotrain. I've heard good things about the Autotrain but having to pick it up in VA is a hassle for me. My one experience with Amtrak from CT to FL cured my fear of flying! ;)

I take the regular train and love it. Granted you have to take a cab to and from the station to your resort, but once there Disney buses are all I need. I first went down coach class and that was a nightmare. You must have a sleeper car. Meals are included, you have your own toilet, sink, TV, etc. I love just staring out the window at the landscape!:bounce:

I have taken both the regular train (Baltimore, Md. to Jacksonville, Floriday) and twice have taken the auto train. All times I have had a deluxe sleeper...it's not the BCV, but I really did enjoy myself. Sandie
