North To Alaska--May 3, 2011 on the Disney Wonder

I signed up for Vancouver Tourism newsletter. The following information was in the latest eNewsletter ...

Bird's Eye Views of Vancouver: More than 250,000 fans have descended on Vancouver for the 21st installment of the Olympic Winter Games. Streets are packed with international revelers and slopes are full of world-class athletes going for gold. But all that excitement can get a little overwhelming: so much to see and do, so little time. Fortunately, there are plenty of places in Vancouver to get away from it all and soak up some great views of the Olympic city. Here are a few of the best spots.

Less than 30 minutes by car from downtown Vancouver, Grouse Mountain and its 4,000-foot peak offers panoramic views of the city. The popular ski resort is open 24 hours a day during the Olympics and also serves as the set for NBC's Today show. The only way to get to the top of Grouse in winter is aboard the Skyride, a special gondola that travels a mile up the thickly forested mountain. At the top of Grouse is an even more spectacular vantage point: the viewing pod on top of the massive wind turbine. Known as the Eye of the Wind, Grouse Mountain offers sustainability tours that encourage guests to make a positive contribution to the planet while providing them with the most breathtaking views.

Just outside downtown Vancouver is the breathtaking Queen Elizabeth Park. The highest point within the city, the meticulously manicured park and gardens offer unobstructed views of Vancouver's skyline and the Coast Mountains beyond. The park is also home to an indoor tropical conservatory, where rainforest plants, birds and fish flourish beneath a massive acrylic dome.

Consistently rated one of the best drives in North America, the Sea to Sky highway is a rugged stretch of mountain road that connects Vancouver with the resort town of Whistler. The highway hugs the cliffs along the edge of Howe Sound, a Pacific fjord filled with rocky islands, and there are several specially designated look-out points along the way.

I wonder if DCL will offer some Vancouver excursions. On the Med cruise, the port excursions for Barcelona are only available to TA cruisers, so maybe those of us on the repo will have Vancouver options. I'd love to see a bit of the city while we're in port.

You'd think they could treat Vancouver as a post-cruise excursion, for those on the REPO? I've never participated in any Port Canaveral excursions, but know others have done so.

I am SURE that Disney will be planning for both pre and post excursions. They won't want to leave anyone out. :goodvibes

I heard through the TA grapevine that DCL is putting excursions together and may announce them as early as late summer.

FYI to all... I added the link to the Vancouver Tourism Page on the Repo Thread...

I hope you're right! When I tried to book pre and post cruise excursions for Barcelona, only to be told that I couldn't, I was shocked! Disney? Not wanting my money??? The CM at DCL actually laughed with me about that.

Nice! Planning opportunities! I can't wait! I've been reading through some Alaska guide books and am really looking forward to some totally different experiences. One thing I really appreciate about the Med excursions is that there are so many that allow children to participate and that are appropriate for young kids (as in, not too much walking, half-day trips). I think Disney put some thought into that, which is nice. My 4 year old still needs her afternoon nap!

Good Morning Cruisers!

I think the Olympics has helped everyone want to plan for this cruise! I think we are planning to spend a few days there before heading home. We do have a friend there who would never forgive us if we did not touch bases with him while we are there.

I put off the dog walk until later today, just could not face the dark, cold and wind all at the same time - later I will just have to face the cold and wind but it will be sunny! It is warmer - it was 27 degrees this morning, but with 25mph winds, the wind chill was about 2 degrees.

The wind has picked up and now it looks more like Cheyenne, with bare spots of grass visible and larger drifts of snow.

Have a great day all - after today I am back to working the early shift so will not make it back here until the weekend.

Welcome to the weekend Kiddies.:cool1:
Cool and dry here.
Hard to believe that it is just 14 months + to go before the west coast adventure.

Get to go back to work on monday.:thumbsup2

It's a jungle out there, have a very fruitful day.

Maybe you might be interested in some video from the Wonder today.
A Sacramento, CA tv station was doing a remote from the ship as it was in Nassau.
I would assume this is a build up to the Wonder's repositioning to the west coast.

The page is HERE.
There are 4 videos in all.

Makes me wish I were there!

Good Afternoon Cruisers!

This is my weekly post - all going well here in Wyoming, sorry about the terrible weather the east coast is getting!

Scott & I use the same e-mail address, and he gets that instant notification, I do not think it will let me use the same e-mail address, and I usually head here before checking the e-mail anyway! Where is suburban Philly are you from - I grew up in Valley Forge - right across the street from the park.

Have a great week all, and Happy Valentines Day!

I grew up in Langhorne. It's a Small World after all :)

DW was born and raised in Warminster, Bucks County ... and I, in Horsham, Montgomery County!

This is my first time on here and wanted to say hello. We will be on the first Disney Alaska cruise. We have been on an Alaskan cruise before and on a Disney cruise before and are excited to get to see Alaska the right way. I saw Bob's link to a roster for the cruise. Is there somewhere we add our info? Judy

Hey Bob...Disney must be doing a lot of promotion with TV stations lately...our local morning show was just on the Wonder (when they had the rough seas and they didn't get to Castaway because the Magic could leave)and all the scenes from those videos look exactly like what our news anchor did....and she is such a huge Disney nut, it was great to see her on the ship...I had it saved on my DVR but unfortuntely it died and I had to get it replaced so I lost my copy...

I have just updated the roster. It can be seen at ROSTER
Let me know of any omissions or errors.

I apologize for not keeping up.
Been a bit pre-occupied.

I have become a fan of curling. Or at least of Cheryl Bernard.

Good Evening Cruisers!

Welcome to new cruisers!

Sounds like quite a few of us have some roots in PA.

Have a good week folks!

Lynn, I join the group that has some sort of roots in PA. I am a military brat so growing up my "legal" address was my grandparents house in Scranton.
