NorCal to Disney Route

I guess the point is you have no major options unless your BFF can get out of class! Come on leave little earlier the Prof will understand! :)!!!

I would vote 100% against going 101. I say go the 5! Oh and I DID say THE...born and raised in the bay, NEVER in SoCal, but I still add THE! Kinda like going on THE freeway! :rotfl: HA HA!

Maybe it's because it's a single digit #. I can't imagine saying "to get to SF go on THE 280 N" That sounds so weird. THE 85 THE 87?? :rotfl2:

Unless THE 5 (sorry couldn't help it) is snowed in, if you want speed drive I-5. I had to laugh, I'm in san jose and we never put the "THE" in front of freeways...

My DH is from the mid west, and he always calls soda POP.

Oh I'm so glad I'm not alone in not learning that! My brother even does it now...too long in San Diego, I guess. But he would swear, if I bothered to ask him, that San Jose did it too. What does he know; he was a freshman then my mom moved him out to Miami and learned to drive there. He does not know!

Our dad is from Denver. He says Colorado in the Spanish way, so "wrong" for a Coloradan. And he says "warsh" and you can imagine how my adopted state comes out...and he goes back and forth between "Coke" (how I grew up saying ANY soda, or ANY drink for that matter...took me a whole year to lose the "Coke" and just be specific or say "pop" to fit in here) and "sodapop". Oh the horror....

Yikes! That's terrible for your trip to be so much longer than you thought it would be. It usually takes us 8 hours on the 5 to go up north and 10 hours on the 101. I love taking the 101 but we almost always take the 5 because it goes so much faster.

My parents are from Washington and they say pop. I would always have to correct them when I was younger as this was quite embarrassing to a teenager.

It was awful! And we trusted everyone who said it would be the same time.

Hubby's from here and says pop. After my freshman year of college and taking Coke from my vocabulary, I usually call it what they call it wherever I am. Though it rarely comes up now, since we don't drink it anymore.

Anyone else find it weird that the NON-Buellton Andersen's can't be found online?

My dad also says "warsh" and he's from Washington! (Warshington?). It's funny because my mom never says that even though she grew up a few blocks away from my dad. My mom's mom used to say "warsh" but for some reason my mom never did.

Okay, in continuing with going off topic, am I the only one who says "sofa" instead of "couch"? Everyone says "couch" it seems like but for some reason I always say "sofa". I guess I must have gotten that from my parents. Maybe it's a Washington thing. My grandma used to call her sofa a davenport which used to confuse me.

We are in Santa Clara and always take 101. My husband went to college at Cal Poly so we have to stop at the Firestone Grill in SLO. Their avocado, bacon cheddar burger is worth the extra time! It's also a good stopping point to let our daughter get out and stretch her legs for a bit.

I had to laugh, I'm in san jose and we never put the "THE" in front of freeways, but last June I was in LA with my BFF and put the THE in front of a freeway. She said "could you please stop doing that it's annoying" Why does LA do that?

now that's a debate for another thread

LOL I did the same thing without realizing it, DBF said "what you're from LA now?" LOL I think everyone says it that way down there because it's easier, up here in the North we don't have quite as many freeways. I find myself saying it because my co-worker who lives down there says it that way so I just sort of pick it up. LOL but ya, I normally just say "take 80 to 680 and exit at xxxx" and people know what I mean. LOL

Gma is from Arkansas, she says "warsh". :) I say couch most of the time but sometimes sofa pops out. See when we were younger Gma called the place everyone sat the couch, and the nice one that was more for display the sofa....LOL

My Grandmother used to call the couch a "chesterfield" I think it was a brandname like "lazy boy" or something

Hey All,
I live behind SCU’s baseball field, so add another South Bay DIS’er here.

There is one question I have for the So Cal people. We have WWW.511.ORG that shows real time color commute maps with all “The” freeways.

Is there a web page showing So Cal real time traffic speeds?

Thanks,
Don

My dad called it a davenport every so often.

Is your dad from central/eastern WA? Or at least from what is now the eastside over in the Issaquah/Bellevue area?

I have another complication in how I say things b/c my mom, and most of her friends (they all moved out to SF in the 60s), was from Schenectady, NY. I learned Albany was a capital before I learned Sacramento! So ways of saying things in my extended family are ALL over.

I still would love to know why it took us so long to get to PPH that day.

Thanks for the couch/sofa explanation. I wonder if that was a common way to distinguish between the nice one and the one you're allowed to sit on.

I've never heard that one before. I wonder if Davenport was a brand name too. :confused3

My parents grew up in Spokane, so yes, eastern WA.

I think there's a couple websites but I've used www.sigalert.com and it seems to be pretty good.

Interesting (and totally OT) my grandma is from Eastern WA-Yakima Valley- and it has always cracked me up when she calls the couch a davenport. So fussy sounding.

Yes, that's the one I rely on when we venture out from behind the Orange Curtain. I see on the MousePlanet site some people recommend 5 -> 210 East -> 605 South -> 91 East -> 5 South or 5 -> 210 East -> 605 South -> 57 South -> Ball Road or Katella. If you hit LA outside of rush hour I'd say just stick with "the eye five".

Hey, Guess what? I always say "sofa" too! :rotfl: Actually, to me a sofa sounds more comfy than a couch.

My sister and I went to college in Spokane and she stayed there...can't get more Eastern the Spokane! And yes....POP...made me nuts! I am like it is SODA people!!!

this is completely OT as well, but funny enough to mention...

when my oldest daughter was 2.5, we traveled to michigan to visit a friend of mine. my daughter had only ever heard of soda referred to as "soda", so when my friend said, "mari, do you want a pop?", my daughter looked at me with wide eyes, and said, "mama, she wants to hit me!"....HAHAHAHAHA!!!

it seems even more comical to me now, 16 years later, because 1) my daughter was never allowed soda, so why was my friend offering soda to a toddler?, and 2) she'd also never been hit, or "popped", so i have no idea why she thought of being hit when she heard the word "pop". anyway, we all cracked up when it happened...

I've never heard anyone else call it a davenport. Maybe it's a grandma thing. You're right it is fussy sounding. My grandma's sofa was sort of flat and didn't have big billowing cushions like a lot of sofas have now so I used to think that "davenport" referred to that type of sofa. :rotfl:

Hey, Guess what? I always say "sofa" too! :rotfl: Actually, to me a sofa sounds more comfy than a couch.

Hmmm... well, i wonder why we both say sofa? :rotfl: Do you find that most people say couch? Even people I knew growing up or from that area say couch so I'm thinking it might be a northern thing we picked up from mom and dad?

:rotfl2: That's funny. Poor girl thought she was going to get popped!

we are going to make the Sacto to Anaheim trip on April 3 and back on the 7th
planning to leave around 12:00-2:00 AM on Saturday and Leaving Anaheim around 8-10AM on Wednesday

any suggestions as far as the route, if the Saturday or Wednesday trip will hit rush hour or any alternate routes. straight down I-5 is about 420 miles, anyone know what the above quoted route mileage is???

what is the worst/best case time we arrive in Anaheim with no stops on the way and assuming no traffic. thanks
