nook vs kindle

The Nook and Kindle displays aren't identical... at least until the newest Nook comes out.

DRM can be stripped from any format, so you'd be able to buy content from any provider regardless of the e-reader you buy.

I bought the Nook over the Kindle. I compared the two side by side and the displays were identical. I don't care what kind of backend software they use, the end result is the same. I chose the Nook because I didn't want to be locked into buying everything from Amazon. The Nook uses ePub format which is the generic format everyone other than Amazon is using.

I was able to download some scripts online and can strip the DRM encryption from the Kindle books and reformat them to ePub so I can buy from anyone.

Considering how unresponsive the LSD touch screen was on the original nook I'm not so sure I would want an ereader that is a touch screen only from B&N.

That said, now that Nook is offering the pearl eink screen and Amazon is going to allow library lending I think the choice is going to come down to what ereader a person likes the look of the best.

I did hear a rumor that Amazon's library feature will be done through the wireless connection so people will not have to side load library books like with the other ereaders, which sounds cool if it happens.

I got a Kindle for Christmas and my co-worker got a Nook. The biggest difference between the two is the battery life. I charge mine every 4-6 weeks. My coworker has to charge hers every 2 weeks or so. We both have similar reading styles, about 30 minutes a day.

Now that the Kindle has lending (especially with library lending coming later this year) I think the Kindle has a slight edge. It is a very slight edge though, and both are great products.

I agree. I have the nook my daughter has the kindle and she has to charge it much less then I do.

The new Nook has been announced. It looks kind of like a shrunken iPad.

Highlights:

  • Touch screen controls.
  • Allegedly has a two month battery.
  • e-ink Pearl screen, just like Kindle.
  • Several Fonts and Font sizes.

Actually, a little disappointed in General with this one...not having a 3G model of this version is what will hurt it the most.

I think I need to revise my opinion of the new nook. At first, I was most upset about the lack of 3G, but after much consideration, I realized that I never really used the 3G, and usually I have a running list of books that I want to read, so on an extended International trip, I wouldn't really need to worry about the access.

I ended up playing with the device a few times in B&N, and decided that I really liked it, so I bought one. The touch screen is extremely responsive, which is great especially if you like to make highlights or notes in the book as you read. It's light weight. It's functionality has been reduced to an e-reader with access to the B&N store (still has a microSD slot for expanding the memory). They removed the web browser, games, color nav screen, etc. For me, personally, not a big deal...I have my iPhone with me most of the time for internet access and any gaming that I might do.

I was leaning toward upgrading to a Kindle until I started playing with one of these. It's a great little device.
