I'm planning to buy either a Nook or Kindle in the next month or so...what does everyone suggest? I'm not really looking to read magazines or surf the web (I do most of my surfing with iPhone). Thanks!

I would say that if you want 3G - go Kindle, if not and you just want Wi-Fi, go for the newest Nook (aka Simple touch reader). Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Kindle is probably due for an upgrade pretty soon, so it's not a bad idea to take that into consideration as well.

Most Best Buys now carry both readers...if you can, I'd go take a look and see which seems best to you.

I love my Nook :) One consideration could be if you want to purchase your books at Amazon or not. I've been told that it is a pain to get non-Amazon (non Kindle format since that is a totally Amazon proprietary format) purchased books onto a Kindle. I don't know if that is just user ignorance or actually the case since I don't have one. I do know that I buy ebooks all over and check them out from my library and they all are easy to get onto my Nook. According to my library's website, the Kindle cannot be used with their service.

On the flip side, I cannot put Kindle books on my Nook (Amazon doesn't allow other readers access to the digital rights management for Kindle books) so if I can ONLY get an ebook from Amazon I have to read it on my phone using the Kindle app. (There is a workaround for this - if I want to geek out and "root" my Nook - I would be able to use Kindle for Android on it - but I could also be killing my warrantee.)

I would suggest the iBooks or Kindle ap for your iPhone, that way you only have to carry around one device.

I'm a Kindle fan.

I suggest you visit Barnes and Noble and look at the Nook and visit Target or Best Buy and look at the Kindle.

Do some research and find which one suits you best.

Again...I'm biased, I like my Kindle and have had great experiences with Amazon Customer Service.

I have the Nook Simple Touch. It's awesome. I love that I can use the same .epubs on my iDevices (iPod, iPhone and iPad) that I can sideload right on the Nook. I love getting books from the library. I love that it's simple, I don't need a multitasking device, I just want to read on it! The touch interface is WAY nicer than I ever expected. It refreshes less and is faster than the current Kindle. I have no need for 3G downloading for books, so the fact that it is WiFi only works great for me. I would wholeheartedly recommned the Nook Simple Touch.

I have a kindle with 3g no glare, I really like it alot, they both are nice, I don't think you can go wrong.

I have both. I like the Kindle more because it's lighter. But they are both nice. Love mine.

I prefer the nook. I really like the new simple touch reader for the following reasons...
Thin and light
No wasted space (it does not have a physical keyboard)
It supports ePub
Battery life is great.
Touch based interface
Borrow books from the library (fairly easy)
Information syncs with my iPad and android.

Cons...
Web browser is not supported, here is one hidden on the device, but if you want to view online content this can be frustrating
B&N partitioned the device limiting the disk space available for personal content. (this is not a huge issue for me)

Good luck.

I own a Kindle and I'm not interested in a Nook. We buy a lot of things on Amazon so it is natural and easy to buy the ebooks there. They have tons of free books.
Also, I don't buy regular books at B&N very often because they are always more expensive than the same book at Amazon. I don't know how their ebook prices compare but it might be good to look in to.

We got my mom a Kindle for her birthday and she loves it. We looked into both, Kindle and Nook, but for my mom, who just wants to read books with it, the Kindle was the best option for her. The only drawback to the Kindle was that you can't download library books, but I have read that by the end of the year you will be able to that on Kindle.

One thing I don't like though is that sometimes when I look for a Kindle book I notice the price for the download is more expensive than buying the actual book on Amazon.

I have the Nook color and I love it. I mostly splurged for that so the kids could have the colors on picture books, which they really enjoy on there especially the ones that read aloud to you. I dont really use it for web browsing so I cant comment on how that goes.

The only cons I have is my eyes get really sensitive to the brightness of the LED screen and I have to turn it way down if I'm reading in low light. And it doesnt have the non glare screen so reading outside I usually have to turn the brightness way up. But I wouldnt go back and trade up.

Hi, I have the Nook Color and I LOVE it. I take it everywhere I go. My kids love the apps and the children books. Some of them even have animated illustrations that are activated by touching the screen as you read. it is very cute.

I love it because I can read in bed (in the dark) without an added reading light. I took it to the beach this summer and could read fine. I had to turn up the the back lit screen to it's highest setting, but it was doable.

Customer service is great too. When my charger cable broke, I called and they sent me out another one without charging me. I got it in three days.:) I also like that if there is a problem I can walk into the nearest B&N store and get help. They also have Nook Nights at their stores. These are basically free classes to help you get the most out of your Nook.

I think in the end, you will be happy with whatever you choose.

In the next month or so you may have another choice from Amazon as well. In September or October Amazon is going to come out with at least one tablet, possibly two.

There was an article today stating that Forrester Research believes Amazon could sell as many as 5 million of these units this fall, as long as it prices the tablets below $300. Apparently, everyone believes Amazon will sell the tablets at a loss, and make up the money selling books, movies and music.

I LOVE my Nook Simple Touch. Just tap the screen to turn the page. Because of the touchscreen it is all screen and is the perfect size. I also read that there are more books for the Nook, not sure if that is true. Also it is easy to get free Project Gutenberg books onto the Nook, so mine's loaded with the classics. (OK I haven't necessarily read them, but if it is ever stolen someone's going to be impressed).:thumbsup2

One more thing... The Kindle has a better battery life. Having both I can say that for a fact. And you can put as many giftcards as you want on your Amamzon account. Nook lets you store three at any given time. But you won't go wrong with either one.

Not sure about the battery. The new Nook Touch has a battery that lasts 2 months on a charge, per Barnes & Noble. I don't know what that means on a per day basis, but I read 2.5-3 hours a day and can go 3-4 weeks before I charge (and then it still has 1/3 or 1/4 charge left.) If you have the Simple touch and are getting shorter battery life you may have a bad battery.

I had a Kindle 3g but didn't like that it wasn't back lit, so I went for the nook Color and adore it! Plus you get a free book every Friday!! Who doesn't like free????

I love my Kindle which I received as a birthday present.

I also like that there are more ereaders on the market. It forces Kindle to keep up.
