Nook Vs. Kindle...I need help!

Hate to sound like a broken record.....but do some research.

One of the things I always tell people is to make a list of their 5 favorite books and see whose pricing is better.

Make a list of books you think you'd like to read and see who has more availability.

Classics are pretty much free on both readers as they are now in public domain.

Free books abound on all sites...just dont expect the NY Times Best Seller list to be free. The free books are usually new, independent authors looking to make a name for themselves. This is not a judgement on whether they are good or bad...just an observation.

I have a Kindle and an Ipad and I can tell you that I MUCH prefer the Kindle app to iBooks and I prefer Amazon to the iBook store....by a longshot.

Not a fan of iBooks.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. I bought the kindle because the only thing I wanted it for was to be able to carry around more than one book at a time and be able to read anywhere. It only took one trip dragging Stephen King's book "Under the Dome" to realize that there had to be a better way. :lmao:

If you're looking for one device that can do more than carry books-the nook might be a better choice.

This is a problem in threads like these. Currently, there are two Nook models. There is the Nook Color - which can be rooted to be a fully functional android tablet and there is the Nook Simple Touch - which is very similar to the current Kindle wifi. The simple touch has a longer battery life, faster processor, and fewer refreshes than the current generation Kindle. It also has a touch interface and no physical keyboard. it's rumored that there will be a new Kindle soon. But for right now, most reviewers will tell you to go with the Nook.

I looked at the Nook Simple the other day at B&N and I didn't like it. It felt too small in my hands.

Interesting that you didn't mention that in your original post. I was discussing the bolded which were the reasons you stated that you didn't pick the Nook

Neither of which apply to the Nook Simple Touch. I could care less which one you choose. I was just pointing out that your reasons for choosing something else don't actually apply to one of the Nook devices.

I chose the Kindle.

With the Kindle, you can share books with your entire family. Well, you can share with anybody you trust with your credit card. I set up a separate gmail account and amazon account just for books. All of our devices are linked to that one account. Most publishers will let you have your books on 5 or more devices at the same time. So, both of my sons and I can read the latest thriller at the same time.

Also, you can get a Kindle app for almost anything. (My WebOS phone doesn't get to play.) Amazon wants to sell books. They aren't picky how you read them.

These first two features clinched it for me.

It is true that getting non-kindle books onto a Kindle is little work. You have to convert the book using Calibre or something similar. But, once you've got it, you just email it to your Kindle. If you download it on wifi, it's free. You can also send word docs and pdf files to your Kindle the same way. Sorry, to say that there is no zoom for pdf's.

Amazon has said that there will be support for standard epub books in the future. I don't know if this will just be for new devices or if there will be an update.

Also, if you want an Android tablet, the up coming Kindles probably won't be a good choice. The rumor mill says that they will be fairly locked down. So, if you want a tablet or iPad, get it and run the Kindle app.

To Kevin's point, do your research! I have the Nook simple touch (had the first version but wanted the lighter, touchscreen version) and love it! My mom has the kindle and she loves it! She does not like mine, I do not like hers. Check out other websites besides BN and Amazon like engadget or cnet. They review them and do side by side comparisons

If you reading takes you any deeper than the NYT Best Sellers List.....do some comparison shopping and find which retailer offers the book selection you want.

Amazon and Barnes and Noble offer discussion boards aimed at their particular clientele.

Be warned.....the posts on these discussion forums can take snarky to new heights.

We do not have the current generation ones, but I like my kindle better than my daughter's nook. I find the kindle battery lasts significantly longer - my theory is that the color small navigation screen at the bottom of the nook burns battery. Kindle battery will last forever if you turn off the wireless.

As an update, I bought a Nook! It was really tough to decide but there were a couple of pluses that led me to the Nook...thanks for everyone's help! I've since become inseparable with it :scared1:

Oops, I was just going to chime in and suggest that you wait and see what the upcoming Kindle Tablet will have to offer.

Personally, I have Sony's PRS-650 Touch eReader, and totally LOVE it! It's not WiFi or 3G, it's just a reader, which is all I want. I can access any content I want by hooking it up to my computer.

Sony does, however have a new WiFi eReader that just came out, and it looks pretty cool!

Sayhello

I have the Nook Simple Touch and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! It is light and the battery lasts forever...far longer than the 1st generation Nook. But I suppose it really depends on where you normally buy your books from. I've been a loyal B&N costumer for a long time. Plus, if I go to a B&N store I can read books for free in there on my Nook. Personally, I can't read on anything with a back light (i.e. Nook Color, ipad, etc) or I get a massive headache.
