I had to fly to New Jersey to take care of legal things today I flew united. But when I fly back I'm flying frontier airlines never flown them before I have anxiety about it because there a budget airline. I did not have a choice my lawyer made the arrangements. Any reviews on frontier airlines?

Frontier/Spirit/Allegiant are all great for what you pay.

They fall greatly below Delta/American/United when there are irregular operations, bad weather, mechanical, etc.

They fly a much leaner fleet so if there are issues they likely do not have a plane or flight crew to substitute when there are issues.

They also suffer from a reduced schedule. Often times there are only 1 or 2 flights a day from some cities so if there are issues it might be the next day or later before you can be accomidated.

Having said all that, my wife and I fly Frontier and Spirit often. It is hard to pass up some of the amazing fares. We have two wheeled carry ons that meet the sizing criteria for a free personal item on Frontier and Spirit and often plan 2 or 3 day trips around $17 dollar fares.

You will have a great flight.

Flew frontier twice, PHL to MCO. One flight was delayed, then rerouted. Other flight was ok timewise, but not a good experience. Snack for sale (ok), and nickel and dime for any options, exactly what you expect from a budget airline. The killer for me was the seats. Hard plastic, felt like sitting on a park bench for 3 hours. will not repeat

I flew Frontier once BOS - DFW no issues. Was under $100 for the flight including all taxes, checked bag, carryon, personal item. Seats were not my favorite. No outlet/plugs/in flight entertainment. Only free item was a water. Checked bag pickup was the complete opposite side of where we landed. Would fly again though for short distances.

Luckily I store a ton of Disney cartoons with me especially in the event that I’m flying on an IFE-less aircraft.

Ideally, we will try to only fly with the discount airlines like Frontier if it’s the first flight out in the morning (meaning you’re not relying on the plane staying on schedule) and only direct flights. They’re fine for what they are - no frills, uncomfortable seats and some unreliable schedules. We just flew them last week and pretty much violated all my rules. 😂. We flew late in the day (in fact, we had an 11pm flight home ) but only packed using personal items, so backpack only. But it was a last minute cheap trip, the two of us flew round trip to Fort Lauderdale for under $300.

We just flew Frontier out of FLL in Feb.

It took 2.5 hours to check our bags in. There was no expedited process. You could print your tags at a kiosk, but still had to wait in line.

Once we got through that mess, we had a direct flight that took off 20 minutes late and went great. I will note, there is no wifi to purchase.

Would you mind to provide a link to the wheeled carry-ons that qualify as personal items?

Any bag 18x14x8 will do as a free personal item.

We bought one at Kohl’s and another at a yard sale.

Here is one on Amazon.

Thanks for the tip & link. I obviously should have looked into it further, but it never would have occured to me that those bags qualify as a personal item. I guess I though they weren't malleable enough to fit under a seat.

I flew Frontier nonstop from Cleveland to Atlanta last year. I did pay extra to select my seat and to check a bag. The flight itself was fine, but the plane left late and I found the boarding process in Atlanta was disorganized. A huge line and one person working the desk and no announcements were made, so people were not sure where to go. Now that I’m thinking about it, I remember that the flight information wasn’t on the electronic screen at the boarding area either.

I am fine with Frontier for short flights; they do have some amazing bargains.

I do 3 things to help ensure my comfort and sanity: bring a drink & snacks of my own onboard, carry a small seat cushion (I have a folding one the size of a book), and ALWAYS, ALWAYS screenshot my boarding pass when it is issued. It also helps to wear a light jacket with ample pockets when boarding, which holds the add'l small items without getting you ordered to consolidate everything into your under-the-seat bag.

If you are delayed or if the kiosks or app are malfunctioning, you will have to go to the counter to get a BP, and they will charge $25 for speaking to you in person and printing it for you. I stood my ground and refused to pay it the last time it happened at MCO, but I don't want to deal with that again, so a screenshot is a backup must-do. (I was delayed a bit getting to the airport, but the flight was also delayed 2 hours, so I foolishly didn't worry. But ... the app was refusing to load on my phone, and the kiosk closed off BP printing 1 hour before the original flight time.)

My usual "personal item" for Frontier is a thin cloth zippered sling bag; only slightly upgraded from the kind you use for groceries. It has a very wide crossbody strap that is comfortable, and it has no shape of its own, so as long as I don't overstuff it, it will always fit in the sizer. If I need to carry a few extra items of clothing, I can use a small space bag inside to save room. (It's a Chico rePETe sling bag that I added a zipper to.)

I am going to be honest...Frontier ain't good. It's fine if you only care about getting from points A to B and are willing to take some abuse (lol, that's dramatic but it's not far off).

They used to be so great, but in the last 5 years it feels like it has gone downhill in terms of service. I don't know if we just got used to flying United (and we usually try to do the premium classes where more is included) so that may skew our perceptions.

The first was when we were going for a funeral and found out that they broke our suitcase. We had to wait in line for about an hour, they were not going to help us until I insisted. They brought out a smaller/cheap suitcase that we were able to take, though, so eventually they made it right with a lot of persistence.

The next is that the flight attendants were having a really bad day on another flight. We were in row 2, but there was no room for our bags because people were putting them in the overhead space and going to the back of the plane. When we asked the flight attendant and mentioned this was happening (because we had just seen 3 people do it), she said "just put it back there!" and pointed to a free bin about 8 rows back. Obviously not ideal and we had a heck of a time trying to get our luggage when the plane landed. One of the attendants came back and started shifting stuff around and said..."You need to get your backpack out of here!" and pointed to my mom. It wasn't hers, but the FA was just very gruff.

On that same flight, the flight attendants sprayed some sort of Bath and Body Works spray several times in the area up front. It's those smaller, more potent scents that come in the small bottles. It was so bad that I had to do a makeshift mask because my lungs were tightening up due to my asthma. I usually don't have problems with breathing/asthma and haven't since childhood, but that triggered it bad in such a confined space.

They can be very picky about luggage size when you're about to board. Just make sure nothing you have is overstuffed, and they won't try to charge you extra. They will sometimes force people who have a backpack test the size before getting on the plane. If it looks like it is at any point overstuffed, they will charge around $70. The agents get a commission from this extra fee so it incentives them to find baggage that is a little too large. Not sure if this is still happening, but we saw a couple people get pulled out of line to pay the fee a couple years ago.

All this being said, we haven't flown with Frontier since early 2024 and only for a 1.5 hour last minute flight. You will most likely have a non-eventful, fine flight. I wouldn't stress...you might even get a memorable story from it. We now laugh about how absurd some of our flights have been lol
