Nook or Kindle?

Bit of a loaded question...depends on your technical level...my wife and kids all have Kindles, but knowing that the Nook is Android based - opens it up to a host of possibilities - it can be registered via BN as a Nook, but then it can be Rooted to allow other Android apps to work on it - like the Kindle app for tablets...then you actually have both.

BUT since I wouldn't expect you to do that prior to giving it as a gift I'd say the Kindle - the screen is easier for reading in different lighting conditions.

For me, I chose the Nook. Mainly for it's library lending capabilities. Supposedly the Kindle will have library lending by the end of the year though.

I can't compare but I do have a Kindle and LOVE it! :)

I have used both, Nook is much easier to use and download books--as well as searching for books on the BN site, much easier. I have a Nook color because I like the backlit screen and don't have to use booklights, etc. to read in bed at night :thumbsup2. It's also nice for traveling, again, not having to worry about an auxiliary light to read.

My DD and I both got e-readers this past week. She got a Nook, I got a Kindle. I was helping her download a book for her via the USB cable. We had to call B&N to figure it out. She does have wi-fi on hers, but we were at my house which does not have wi-fi. So, maybe it is easier to download on a Nook if you have wi-fi:confused3???? Not sure if Nook is available with 3g. I have wi-fi AND 3g. It is beyond simple for me to download. Simply press "Buy now with one click", and there it is on my Kindle!!! Oh, and I love checking on the free books!!! I have enough downloaded to keep me busy for a few months:cool1:!!

And between Amazon and B&N's websites, I find Amazon easier to navigate. But, again, I spend most of my time on Amazon due to the Kindle. Actually, I spend too much time on Amazon:rolleyes1!!!!!

All in all, I'm sure you can't go wrong with either one!!!

Depends how much you want to spend. I have a kindle and I love it, very easy. I bought DS a Nook Color for his bday and it's incredible.

Mine is Wi-Fi--I don't "download" anything, it just shows up after I click "buy now". I can connect my Nook to my computer and load books from sites like Guetenberg.org, etc. though. It's pretty easy, just load the software and drop and drag. If I am somewhere without Wi-Fi I have to wait to get to a wi-fi spot to download but I have over 400 books on my Nook right now so I don't worry about that at all. You don't need to have wi-fi to read a book. I can make my cell phone into a Wi-Fi spot so if I ever needed to I could just do that but I haven't needed to yet.

I hate trying to find books on Amazon-and I use their site all the time. BN had a dedicated Nook page and you can type in 0.00 or Free and all the free books show up. Amazon doesn't weed out that way so you get hits for all kinds of stuff that aren't even books, etc.

Oh, and with a Nook, you can go to any BN store and read any book in there for free (for an hour at a time). It's a nice way to try some paid books to see if you like them or not--or if you frequent BN, you could read entire books that way. There are also usually coupons for fee drinks, etc. at BN if you bring your Nook in. :thumbsup2

I chose the kindle, mostly because it was the best available at the time. I got it 2 years ago. I'm still happy with my choice because the sole purpose of it for me is to read books. I don't need it for music or magazines or anything like that. I bought one for my goddaughter a month ago and she loves it. The newer models are faster and have a better screen than mine so I may be upgrading soon....

Would she prefer:

1) Backlit or EInk ?
2) Touch screen or non touch screen ?
3) B&N or Amazon?
4) Wifi or 3G?

A few things to help narrow it down.

On Amazon, just type in" 0.00 free kindle books", that weeds almost everything out except for an occasional $.99 book.

Saved the pixelfind site, thanks for that tip:thumbsup2!!!

Don't have a B&N store anywhere near me, so unfortunately that would be no help to me. But DD loves B&N, lives near one. I will pass this info on to her.

Thanks!!!

I've had both and I ended up getting rid of the kindle and just upgrading to a color nook. Its SO easy to download books on the Nook and to take books out of the library. My daughter has a color nook also and she is always on the library website downloading books she wants to read. Perhaps when the kindle is advanced enough to be able to download books from the library it will be more worth it.

I have a Kindle with wi-fi only and a color nook. I use them both and like them equally for different reasons. The Kindle is a little lighter to hold and is good for reading in bright sunlight. Primarily I use the Kindle for ereading and love it for this use. It does have the capability to connect and do some simple internet things, but I find it difficult to read since everything on the internet is black, white, or shades of gray.
I also have a Nook color. I prefer to use this device for reading at night since it is backlit. It is also great anywhere, but doesn't do as well as the Kindle in the sunlight. It easily connects to the internet with a wi-fi connection and clearly allows me to check and send e-mail and view most of my favorite sites. I purchased my Noon at a BN store and they set it up for me so I was all set to go when I left the store. At my BN store they also gave free Nook lessons and had someone available to help if you had a problem.
I find that it is just as easy to download books on each and find the prices for books comparable. They are both good devices and personel preference will determine which one works best for you.

golfgal and others, if you search the Kindle Store on Amazon you can sort by price Low to High and pull up all free books. You can also sort by Bestselling, Average Customer Review, and price High to Low. You can also choose a category - ie Literary Fiction - and perform the same sorts. It's very simple.

I looked at both and chose the Kindle. The backlit screen on the Nook is too hard on my eyes, though it did have some nice features.

My Kindle is wi-fi and I don't have any trouble finding or downloading books.

OP, I have a Kindle 3 and love it. I have no complaints at all. I liked it much better than the Nook once I spent time trying each one out. I preferred the feel of the Kindle and the look of it's screen. I personally did not want something backlit, I wanted a dedicated e-ink reader, which eliminated the Nook color right away. I know many people specifically want backlit screens so they don't have to use booklights, but I just read my Kindle exactly the way I read books - by a lamp - so I didn't care at all about the fact that you can't see the Kindle screen in the dark. For someone who needs or wants to read in the dark, obviously the lack of the backlight might be an issue.

It sounds like it works just like the Kindle. As long as your wifi (or 3g, if you have that model) is on, the book downloads automatically once you click the "Buy Now" button. You can also drag and drop books from other sites, or from Amazon if you don't have wifi access for some reason.

It's not difficult to find free books in the Kindle store. The way I like to do it is to list by "Price - low to high" in whichever category I'm interested in. But I rarely bother with that, since I'm on the ereaderiq.com mailing list and they send me the list of new free books every day, and I just click on any of those that sound good.

Lol if you have time to sort through 1.8 million titles more power to you. Barnes & Noble includes all free books in their count - including anything in the public domain, books from other sites like Project Gutenburg, etc. Amazon doesn't inflate its own bookstore like that. For me, it would be much simpler to see what is actually free from the site itself, instead of having to wade through thousands of public domain titles. To each her own, though.

For you. Great! Just don't state that as fact because it's not. I have searched B&N and I don't like it because it's different than what I'm used to but that doesn't make either better.
