and the price seems to be the same for both or at least this week. So, which do you recommend and why? I'm looking for something to read, a few apps and games. Don't want to spend the money for the Ipad or Ipad mini.

We got our DD an Kindle Fire HD for Christmas and I am impressed. She hasn't put it down.

I think it is a good sub for an IPAD at a much better price and she loves that each day there is a free app to down load

Edited to say: That my plan is to get my DH one for father's day.

I love the kindle. I have had one for years and just upgraded to HD Fire about a month ago and love it even more. My friends husband who is a big Computer guy got the Nook and swore by it but, told me that he's really disappointed in it and should have gotten the fire. One of the things that I had been told by Nook owner is that the books are more expensive. I don't know first hand about that but, thought i would pass it along.

Nook!

I love, Love, LOVE my nook tablet.

I just gave my nook tablet to my 8 y/o and upgraded to the Nook HD+. It is completely amazing. I download most of my books from the library, but the ones I do buy are always at a great price.

I watch Netflix on it and the picture is fantastic. Oh, and with my new Nook HD+ I can watch stuff in/from Ultraviolet. Not sure how that works yet, but will figure out soon. I know the Hunger Games DVD we got for Christmas yesterday has an Ultraviolet code.

And B&N gives you a free book every Friday, which is cool. It is often stuff I would not normally read, but give a try since its free. It has really broadened my reading genres.

My kids & I all have the Nook Simple Touch, HOWEVER, I vote for Kindle ;) Even though there is a "Lend Me" option with Nook books, you can only lend them to friends ONE TIME, and the option is gone. I cannot use my B&N discount card towards Nook books. I cannot borrow Nook books from the library (please, please enlighten me if this is available! I'd die!!)

Anyway, we use our Nooks for reading ONLY. The kids have iPods & I didn't want them "sneaking" a game/app, when they were supposed to be reading Literature. (We homeschool.) The Nook books are much cheaper than buying regular books, but I wish we'd all gone for the Kindles. :headache:

My Library had Nook compatible books LONG before Kindle opened up its library program. You should definitely double check this.

Sorry for misinformation  If it is due to the library, not B&N, then my problem still exists :crazy2:

ETA: Our library, which is very large, only supports Kindle e-readers. :( And I'm still frustrated about the one-book lending option.

Had the same dilemma. Actually bought a refurbed Nook; however DH needed a reader for work, so I gave it to him.

Lucked into a little extra money, so instead of going for the Nook, I went with the Kindle. More apps, and a slightly cheaper price.

Who has the best price on the Kindle now? I know there were some deals "before" Christmas.

I was going to buy the new NOOK but then I decided on the Galaxy tab 2 7inch - and I have the NOOK app on it - I love it and I full assess to the android market - NOOK has its only market and lots of things that are free they make you pay for them.

Office Depot has them for $135 this week. That is where I got mine. Keep in mind, this is not the HD.

you might want to check out the Philadelphia Free Library. They let non-residents join for a relatively small annual fee ( used to be $15) and they have a pretty good selection of Nook books.

The Nook HD is most like the Ipad without a camera according to everything I have read. My daughters have Nooks (1 Color and 1 HD) and love them. I like that you can expand the memory with a micro SD card. There are a lot of free books and apps with the Nook too.

I have the Nook Color and enjoy it but from what I have discussed with family members that have Kindles, when I upgrade it will be to a Kindle.
#1 In our library system you can download books directly to the Kindle, for the Nook you have to download to your computer then download from your computer to the Nook. #2 In our house we have 4 Nook Colors. I tried to link them all together like I did our iPhones/iPods so we could share apps and books. When I did this it automatically puts all of my books on my kid's Nooks and vica versa. If one of us deleted the other's book from our own Nook, the others lost it too so we had to set up seperate accounts for each of us. #3 I also think the free books that are offered by Amazon are ones I woudl rather read. It seems like B&N controls what you do and don't do more than Amazon IMHO. #4 I may be wrong but I believe (at least with the older versions) the Kindles are lighter and the battery charge lasts longer.

I keep hearing people talk about the free book every Friday on the Nook. Amazon has literally hundreds of free books for the Kindle all the time. No, they aren't the newest releases, and they're generally from less well-known authors, but I've found many books that I would have never read otherwise. You can search by genre in the Kindle store and sort by price. My aunt wanted 'romantic suspense' and I found 50 free before I stopped looking.

Also, you can download samples of Kindle books at no cost. It really helps me to decide if I want to buy the book or not.

There's the Kindle Daily Deal as well. I picked up The Polar Express for $2.99 yesterday. I've also gotten a ton of free kids' books. They look better on my iPad than my Kindle Touch, just because of the color pictures. We had a 6 hour drive today to visit family, and my 5-year-old spent most of the trip readng new books. I had loaded up 20 or so for the trip and paid less than $5.00 total.

We got DS10 a Nook Color last year, thinking it would be so great for him. Apps and reading, he'd be all set. It does not seem completely user friendly to me and he was not able to get many of the apps he wanted to play. I know they can be rooted into another format but we have not pursued it.
The books he wanted from the library were either not available or had long waiting lists.

Now DH uses it mainly to play Angry Birds. DS reads books on my Kindle instead. I love the free books available on the Kindle and think it's really easy to navigate around Amazon to find things.
