Nook? Kindle? Something else?

I have an original Nook that is on it's last leg. It just isn't working well. My son has a Nook HD that looks amazing and I am thinking of getting one of those, but really just because we have a B and N close by and they have been great with any issues that arise. I see online that B and N may be going out of business soon--so what about a Kindle?
Can anybody weigh in on what they like or don't like? I've also considered an iPad mini but they cost so much more! I do have a mac, though, is that the way to go?
Basically, I'd like to read on it, check my email and play some games ( WWF!)
Thank you!

Are you looking for a Tablet (like the Nook HD) or an eInk reader?

Nevermind, I was multi-tasking and didn't read your post well - sorry.

I prefer the Kindle Fire line over the nook HD. But there really isn't anything wrong with either. IMHO, Barnes and Noble as a business will likely be around for at least another year or two (I think). Your next tablet won't last much longer than that so no worries.

If you want a solid tablet for a lower price you might consider one of the other Android Tablets though. Samsung or Nexus for instance. The cost less than the iPAD mini and work well.

I recently got a Kindle Fire HD and absolutely love it. I use it mostly for reading, but have also downloaded a couple of games and apps for the kids.

I also have an Ipad and like my Kindle Fire HD just as well - maybe even more since I find the smaller size less unwieldy.

I'm not a super-heavy user, though. Mostly I read, shop, browse a bit, play Candy Crush Saga and peruse Facebook. The Kindle Fire HD is great for all of those.

I don't have a Nook, but I'll second the Kindle Fire! I have the original fire and I use it daily! I'm thinking about getting the newest version, but haven't decided yet. If I didn't already have one I'd get the new one in a heartbeat!

Yeah, I'm thinking B&N's situation is precarious, but Amazon isn't going anywhere. Plus, when authors load books, the first place they look to do it is Amazon. So there is more of a selection there.

Let me just add to calm fears.
If and when Barnes and Noble does finally implode, it is likely that another company will buy the remains of their Nook digital products because that segment of Barnes and Noble is profitable.

Barnes already has a partnership with Microsoft for the digital products and it could very well be them in some sort of capacity.

Most likely everybody's eBook licenses and content will transfer to whatever company/store picks that up.

But now that Barnes offers access to Google Play I'd buy everything through there anyway if I had a Nook tablet because then you can play it across several different device lines without fiddling with jailbreaks and DRM cracking.

I love my Nook HD...and with the Google apps, it's also a Kindle. I can pick up free books in either format, play Google games, pick up email, etc. Love it.

I like knowing I can just walk into Barnes Noble store if I need help.

Besides the (obvious) e-reader functions...

These days, the Nook holds a distinct advantage over the Kindle -- with the Nook, you can access millions of apps through Google Play (former Android Market).

With the Kindle, you would have to purchase/download Kindle-specfic content through Amazon.com

I think either is great! It's just a matter of what you are used to. I am a Nook lover. I had the original, and then upgraded to the Touch with light. I am comfortable with the website, browsing and adding/deleting books. My dd has the Kindle Fire and loves it. She loves the Amazon ways of adding/deleting because that is what she is used to.

I've tried to read on the Kindle and it gives me a headache for some reason. I can read my Nook for hours with no problems. I think you are safe whichever direction you go!

Gave my niece a Kindle Fire HDX yesterday. We LOVED the Mayday button. It works just like on the TV commercials. We had a question about how to change the time zone. Pressed the Mayday button. A tech support guy came on. He did it for us, but also showed us how to do it by highlighting things on the screen.

Then Grandma got confused about who we were talking to, and I started laughing, and my niece started laughing, and the Mayday guy started laughing... I think it was the high point of the weekend for my niece.

It's kind of like Skype where you have your camera turned off. We could hear him and see him; he could hear us but could not see us.

For myself, I prefer my iPad. They're very intuitive. You don't need a Mayday button because you can figure everything out for yourself.

I have a nook and a kindle but would never buy another one of either, I don't even use them anymore, I just read everything on my ipad- it has ibooks plus the nook and kindle app so I can get any book I want to read!

Same here! I can find any book I want on my iPad where I'd be limited with my choices if I was stuck with a Kindle or Nook.
