Non-Smoking Rooms

The interiors of all DCL staterooms are designated non-smoking.

Smoking is allowed on all DCL verandahs.

On other cruise lines, smoking is allowed in all staterooms. Between guests, the staterooms are supposedly cleaned so well that non-smokers can't tell if the previous occupants were smokers. (I find this hard to believe.) Even cruise lines such as NCL that used to have designated non-smoking staterooms no longer do.

The non-smoking Carnival Paradise will be moved to California later this year, and will no longer be non-smoking. At that time, DCL will be the best choice in the cruise industry for passengers wishing to stay in non-smoking staterooms.

But, even on DCL, there's no guarantee that your verandah will not get smoke from a nearby verandah.

Thank you for the explaination. Smoking on the verandah doesn't bother me as much -- but the rooms would be a big problem. Thanks for the clarification.

Guess I have to throw in my opinion......no smoking in any indoor areas. Smoke away outdoors.

The only times smoke has really bothered me was on the western cruise. After Grand Cayman and Cozumel, the guys were out on deck 4 smoking their "cubans" and we couldn't get away from the smoke out there. We were walking around the ship and the smokers were spaced out so that there was not a breath of fresh air to be had. So we went back inside to the clubs where the air was clearer.

I always wanted to go on a cruise but this thread is discouraging! I should be able to walk into one of the clubs and not have to breath smoke! Why can't Disney make clubs for non-smokers and others for smokers? That would make everyone happy!!!! Annmarie

Fist let me prefernece this with " I am a smoker but really trying hard to quit". If more smokers were more respectful of non-smokers and their space, there certainly would be less of a debate. If my smoke is bothering someone else and I am not aware of it, please let me know and out it will go. CAMICKEY

Hope to be smoke free by my next cruise (down to less than a half pack a day and diligently working at it) and hope I only run into courteous smokers.

The smokers on the Disney Magic were very respectful. Every smoker that I saw was following the rules. Nobody was smoking where it wasn't allowed.

The problem is with some of the rules.

The biggest problem is Rockin' Bar D. It's the home to terrific cabaret shows and various other events. Smoking is allowed on the raised tier across the entire width of the room after 9:00 p.m. The ventilation is inadequate, so smoke fills the entire room.

Yes, the smoke bothers me, but I wouldn't dream of asking every smoker in the room, "please extiguish your cigarette." After all, they're in the smoking section. So we just sit as far from the smoking section as possible, even though it puts us way to the side of the stage. (If someone tried to smoke next to me in the non-smoking section, I would politely point them to the smoking section.)

I wish you much success with your goal to be smoke free by your next cruise.

other cruise lines did offer smoke-free cruises and as those cruise lines found out its not a good idea cause not enough non-smokers are going on these cruises. im sorry that the smoke offends you. i always try not to offend non-smokers. but if all ease fails and the non-smoker just complains for everything i break out a stinky smelly cigar LOL just kidding. the clubs are smoke free til 9pm daily. so i guess thats the best information i can give

Good for you CAM... I hope you can quit and stay non-smoking, it's a very hard thing to do and stay doing... I will say, I came across only a few smokers up on the open decks... only one stinky cigar smoker, but he was standing up near Signals and no one else was around.

All I had to do was walk away from any who was smoking. It's not like they were blowing the smoke at me and I didn't have a place to go...most of the time I was out for a walk around the decks and I was walking through the "smoking areas", so I just walked really, really fast away from the smokers who were following the rules. The only time it really bothered me was up on deck 10 one morning at sunrise.... there was another man there taking pictures also, then along come his wife and she lit a cigarette, she didn't ask me if I minded, when the smoke started coming over towards me, I moved to the other side. She got the hint.

On my last DCL two years ago, we had a verandah, which I loved. But I was critically ill on board (a brain infection), and was having a very hard time breathing. When the next-door neighbors would smoke on their verandah it was awful for me. But my travelling companion just emntioned it to guest services, and guest services contacted them, and they were happy to smoke there only at night when my door was not open. I spent most of the cruise in the cabin, so it was nice to have the fresh air during the day, and was grateful for their cooperation.

NCL has a good idea regarding smoking in the outdoor public areas. Its only allowed on the starboard side of the ship. That way everybody can go to the place that makes them happiest. I thought this a good compromise.

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING !!!!!! iIDO ANYTHING, anything, to avoid smokers I get horrible, horrible headaches from the stench of cigarettes, FORGET ABOUT CIGARS !!! I most certainly don't want my kids near it either Ther must be some way Disney can segregate smokers, it is not like drinking, overating or use of drugs, where you only hurt yourself, smoke goes everywhere, and sometimes people can be rude I have never asked anyone to stop smoking, but have left the area BUt on a cruise ship, where the H__LL can i go if smokers are aloowed everywhere The one earlier thread about not being able to get away from it has really upset me. I have a back injury and will either be in a wheelchair, or not go off the ship, but where am I to go on the ship to avoid this if is unavoidable Until this thread, I HAD NO IDEA this was an issue It certainley isn't in the parks, SORRY SMOKERS, but , I really wish you could have your own space to light up , which would be away from me !!!

Well, the smokers are allowed everwhere on the ship — but they certainly aren't allowed to smoke everywhere.

There is no smoking in any staterooms, dining rooms, hallways, shops, or theaters. Even the nightclubs are nonsmoking until 9:00 p.m.

Smoking is allowed in designated smoking areas of some (but not all) lounges after 9:00 p.m. Smoking is allowed in all outdoor areas, except right by the Mickey Pool.

Between the Caribbean breezes and the movement of the ship, smoke blows away quickly when the ship is moving. Still you may have to make an occaissional effort to avoid being directly downwind from smokers.

I expect Disney Cruise Line to further restrict (but not completely eliminate) smoking one of these days. Until they do, please be aware that with a little effort, you can almost completely avoid second-hand smoke. Unfortunately, you might have to miss some good entertainment in some of the lounges.

Thank you Werner From the other posts, smoke blowing into your veranda, I was getting really apprehensive I never really thought about this issue until these posts I guess as long as I stay away from the clubs and a verandah, I sould be Okay.

Thanks for the clarification. I feel better now knowing that there are designated smoking areas in the lounges. From a previous post, I thought they were all smoking sections. Annmarie

First let me say to Camickey, keep up the good work, I quit smoking 5years, 1 month, 3weeks and six days ago and every day is an victory over the stress in life that can easily send us back to the habit. If you ever need to write a total stranger and vent, please feel free to contact me. Hope to see you and your family on the cruise!

My opinion and please remember that its only my opinion, is that it would be nice to have all the indoor areas where people go to, be non smoking ....but....there should also be one place at least for people to go that is for the smokers and like the dining rooms, the entertainment, bingo talent shows etc. could be rotated. This way the smokers wouldn't feel like they were being treated un-fairly and neither would the smokers.

As Katdb stated we have 'no smoking' laws in effect in Ottawa in our restuarants and its great but unfortunately some smokers stand right by the front door to get a puff in, before entering or during meals and it gets very annoying for others walking in and out. Its also the same at our hospitals when the sign says 'no smoking' within 9 meters of any of the doors and yet some smokers are so close to the doors they could fall in if the doors opened that way. This is the type of smoker that gets the non smoker angry and that just makes it nasty for everyone.

I am very fortunate in having the greatest incentive for NOT starting smoking again. My Darling DD Katdb, who lost the Best Father in the world to smoking, would be heartbroken if I started again.

So I guess I just want to say that in a non-perfect world, there are always too many problems and not enough solutions to please everyone......BUT...

I would like to see this policy implemented by DCL for the Verandahs and the public areas. If this were done, then I could book a verandah room on the non-smoking side and be reasonably sure that I could actually enjoy use of the verandah whenever I wanted to be out there.

I am an ex-smoker. In fact I just quit Jan 5th of this year. (yeah me LOL)
I do have to say that I think the clubs should be non-smoking... they should have little sections outside of the clubs that are available for those that want to smoke (perhaps there are areas near the clubs that are already available to smokers- I don't know... haven't cruised yet). But I really don't understand why the clubs are allowing smoking- it's alienating ALL the nonsmokers (and even some smokers- even as a smoker I couldn't handle smokey clubs- and neither could many other smokers I know!!!)- and they don't seem to mind alienating the smokers at DTD! The entire place- no smoking inside the clubs. Smoking is only allowed OUTSIDE, outside of the clubs- so why couldn't it be the same on the cruise? What's the difference? I don't see a difference there....

We appreciate your honesty, especially being an ex-smoker. It boggles my mind that DCL allows

in any enclosed area.

I honestly don't understand why they are allowing smoking, even after a certain hour in certain areas, inside those clubs on the cruise. They don't allow it at DTD and yet DTD seems to do just fine on keeping their clubs full. I'm willing to bet they wouldn't lose business on DCL if they had the clubs there exactly the same as the clubs on DTD on the smoking issue. I have always been a smoker when going to DTD (in the past- won't in the future though! ) and it has never bothered me to go outside to smoke nor did it make me not want to go to DTD. In fact, even as a smoker I enjoyed it more... I could smoke right outside just a few steps out the door- but could also go in the club and not feel like it was filled with smoke... which is really awful even to smokers- if there is not really really great ventilation- which there usually isn't.

True- but I wonder if that would have the same result on DISNEY cruise? Reason being- I wonder if a more family/child oriented cruise would be likely to have less smokers on it than other more adult-oriented cruises (those that until the past few years trying to emulate Disney's kids clubs were mostly for adults- not children.... and are still considered more "adult" oriented with more gambling, clubs, etc.)

I dunno... I just wonder if the different cruise lines having a different demographic (for the most part- more families and/or more children going on Disney cruises compared to some other cruiselines) might make a difference in the result of having a nonsmoking cruise. What I mean is.... if DISNEY had a cruiseline that was nonsmoking- I wonder if it would really fail. I have a feeling it wouldn't. I have a feeling that there are more families with/without children that would go on Disney cruises that aren't smokers- that might never go on other cruiselines but Disney- and therefore did not help that nonsmoking cruiseline do well- but with Disney it would fare well?
