Non smoking room request?

Hi,
This topic probably has been covered before, but I am curious on whether Non Smoking room request is considered guaranteed or not on disney resorts (other than DVC of course)?

I always understood it as a guaranteed thing and this past weekend they put me in a smoking room...

just need confirmation I guess...

Definitely not a guarantee. Barring accepted medical need, the only thing guaranteed is the specific room size and view.

Unless you tell them it is for medical reasons it is just a request. Did you ask to be moved?

No, I didn't ask to be moved because it was only for 1 night then we moved to a different resort.
but I forgot how horrible it was to stay in a smoking room.
It was hard to sleep on the smoky bed.
All our clothes smells like smoke only after 7 hours of being in the room.
Had to put everything in the laundry because of it.

I never had a problem with getting a non smoking room when requested. I realized it wasn't guaranteed and just took it for granted. There's no documented medical reason other than my husband just can't breath after prolonged periods of time in a smoky environment. We can handle a few hours at a bar but nothing more than that.

That all changed when we checked in late in the evening at Pop Century and were told there were no non smoking rooms available. It was only for one night but the thought of being in a potential situation that would be uncomfortable had us discussing going offsite. The Cast Member did get us switched. We were honest and said there's no official medical reason but we were changed. Since then, whenever I've made an onsite reservation, I've enforced that non smoking is a necessity and explained why.

This is one area that I wish the entire hotel industry would address better.
