Non-slip Shower

My husband just slipped in the shower. Hit his head and back on the built in seat. Scared the you know what out of me.

Has anyone used the spray on stuff that is anti-slip? I am not sure I want to use a mat. Any recommendations?

Wow! So sorry about your husband's fall. I will be very interested in people's replies as this is a BIG concern of mine with both DH and myself. We have a tub/shower but have been looking into just a shower stall.

They make adhesive-backed rubber strips you can put down in the shower. They come in a variety of shapes and colors.

We have a textured floor in our shower at home, and a mat in the shower in our RV.

Ours is just the shower, but has the seat at the end. Scares me that our bathroom was made accessible a few years ago.

I haven’t used the spray but I have tried both the strips and the shapes and would not recommend them. I followed the installation instructions, but each time they would start to peel off around the edges after a few weeks. The edges coming off drove me nuts so each time I ended peeling them off. Ended up with a mat.

If you can, use a mat. You can put most of them in the washing machine. That's what I do. On alternate weeks, I flip it over and spray with Clorox Clean up with Bleach. It controls the mildew well. A mat is really the best option for non slip.

After my foot surgery, I used a mat for 18 months, just because I didn't feel secure enough to keep myself from slipping. I know it's a pain but you get used to it. I pulled it up after every shower and sort of hung up to dry. And like @DLgal states, just cleaned it up about once a week. Never had an issue. They've got all kinds out there now at various stores and some of them are quite comfy (which is what I needed after surgery). You definitely won't slip with a mat.

I‘m not a fan of bath mats, especially when you have girls with long hair using the tub the mat is in, but I have to say they do work well. I know you said you don‘t want to use it, but it may be a good thing to try first before spraying the tub.

Thanks everyone. We will use a mat to start since the simplest is often the best and go from there.

He leaves at 4 am for work and I slept through him leaving. I am assuming he is ok, but he is hardheaded. Made him at least take Motrin before bed last night to get ahead of any pain.

if you don't want to deal with the mat there's always shower shoes. i know-not a great solution but i would do that before i tried some kind of spray that might damage the shower floor. i did find a company on-line called 'slip doctor'-they seem to carry a variety of different products that you apply to the shower floor (and they have specific ones for specific types of flooring).

But, I may be why he fell we had some bars of shave soap that had been unused for a year. I had told him just to use it as soap, but realize now it is probably more slick.

instead of the swim shoes he might like cheap knock off crocks better-that way his feet could still get clean. when he's done he can get out and turn around and put the shoes upside down in the shower to drain.

The Adidas Adillette slides work really well in the shower. Again, foot surgery and all that. I was so unstable I couldn't even walk around the pool if it was wet. These actually do not move on a wet suface and drain well. I did try the Crocs and they were pretty unstable for me in the shower. Not sure why.

Falling in a bathroom is probably my biggest fear. At home we have shower stall with seat and grab bars.

I have had foot surgery and have balance issues so walking around a pool surface is very difficult for me too.

My recommendation is to search for a good quality Interlocking rubber floor tiles, you want to make sure it has plenty of holes to drain the water, and it stands off the floor so water doesn't puddle. You can build and cut these tiles to fit your shower, and a good grade of tile will stand up to the use of sprays like Clorox Clean-Up Bleach Cleaner, etc.

Years ago, this was my first defense against falling.

Adhesive strips/dot/etc. work pretty well and can be removed. But the tub material may matter.

Home Depot has a variety of different grippy adhesives. But it really depends. on how much needs to be prepped. Their cheapest seems to be strips from Moen, but that's not a whole lot but could be fine if places where one typically stands in a bathtub/shower.

I have used plastic shower/tubs in hotels (plus one used with a room rental) with textured non-slip surfaces. In the rental it was kind of nasty as it hadn't been cleaned in a while and there was this nasty gray soap scum. I went out and got some bathroom cleaner (Scrub Free ironically) that worked, but I needed an old toothbrush.
