Both DH & I get motion sickness on spinning type rides . Since DD (5) will more than likely want to do the teacups, soarin, etc. Does anyone have experience with the non-drowsy dramamine. Do we take it the night before or take 1/2 a pill each morning. I heard it can still make you drowsy so is 1/2 pill a good option and will it work enough? Thanks for you help. We'll be there in 2 days ! ! :yay:

My son, who gets 'green' on alot of WDW rides, takes 1 Bonnine each morning with breakfast and has no problems at all on any of the rides. He does not do the teacups but does everything else. Soaring is not a spinning ride, it is not likely to cause you any problems. I would take the full recommended adult dosage. Bonnine causes me or my son NO drousy problems at all.

I get terribly car sick and I have been trying out different motion sickness meds. I got the patch from my doc but, it gives me such a horrible case of dry mouth (makes my mouth taste bad and nothing I do gets rid of it! And then the bad taste made me sick!) that I decided that it just wasn't worth it. I have also taken less drowsy dramamine and a couple of different occasions it did knock me out (but, I was just sitting around that day). I had not thought about only taking half a pill but, I would say that would probably work. I can read, knit, do what ever in the car with the dramamine and without it all I can do is concentrate on not getting sick!

I will have to try the half a pill thing!

Is Bonnine over the counter?

I checked for Bonine and Dramamine II this weekend at W-Mart and could not find it. Does anyone know where to get it? Thanks

My DH gets motion sickness just looking at a merry-go-round so he takes some homeopathic "pellets". They're non drowsy and he can take them every hour if he needs to. Just check at your local health food store or pharmacy that might carry homeopathic meds.

Enjoy your trip!!!!

I get motion sickness very easily and have found I've had the best luck with Bonine. It doesn't make me drowsy at all. I buy it at my local pharmecy. Its over the counter but they do keep it behind the RX counter for some reason. I just go in and ask.

Try ginger pills! The guys on Myth Busters did an episode once where they tested all kinds of motion sickness remedies (it made me queasy just watching it). Their conclusions were that most of the non-drug remedies (sea bands, etc) don't work at all. The drug remedies (Dramamine Bonine) do work, but leave you feeling the drug effect and not entirely normal. The overwhelming conclusion, though, was that ginger pills work great and left the subjects with zero "off" feeling - they just felt normal and they really worked.

DW and DS12 both took Bonine and it helped them a lot. I think they both took a whole pill and I don't remember either of them being particularly drowsy. Walmart and Target both carry it. You should be able to find it at pretty much any store that carries OTC medications.

DW is very prone to motion sickness, even on non-spinning rides and without medication, she probably wouldn't be able to ride things like RnR, Soarin, Test Track, Star Tours, etc. With the Bonine, she was able to ride everything except the spinning rides.

I think I may be the only one that it does this too. I usually only take it on the car ride down. It completely knocks me out. Granted, I'm only 115 pounds. Usually, if I take half of one, I'm not terrible. But it would seem to me that the excitement of Disney World would make that go away. It works great though! :thumbsup2

whenever I am at a theme park, I am a Dramamine addict! DF and I went last September and took one non-drowsy Dramamine each morning and never had any problems. **NOTE** We still didn't risk any of the spinning rides (no teacups, primevil whirl, etc. We did, however, do the original version of Mission Space and did okay- not wonderful, but okay. I bought a bunch of the small 2 dose packets of chewable Dramamine before we left and kept one or two with us at all times (but the regular one is about the size of a lipstick so it is very portable as well). Worked wonders!

Non-drowsy dramamine makes me drowsy no matter what I'm doing. We tried it on our first trip to Disney and my DH & I spent half the time trying to wake up.

At the recommendation of someone on this board (before the MythBusters episode), we tried ginger. My DH, DD21, DD18 and I now swear by it. No more motion sickness on car rides or airplanes. My DH who wouldn't even attempt ANY kind of motion ride now loves Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain. He's working his way up to trying some of the bigger rides. Kind of hard to do after never being able to ride them because of motion sickness (he's always suffered - even as a child).

We start taking ginger tablets the day before our flight. We take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening. We continue this until we return from the trip.

Ginger tablets rock!!!

Can you tell me what type, size, brand of ginger you take and where you get it?

Thanks.

Dramamine can be purchased at WalMart, Target, CVS, Walgreens or any place that over-the-counter rugs are sold....including the airport.

Dramamine is available in a drowsy and less-drowsy formula. Also chewables are available.

Bonine is my preference - Non-drowsy Dramimine is ok, but I still feel a bit drugged. Take the ginger pills tol. But, I have to say, you ought to avoid the spinning rides - the drugs will give you some relief, but that is just pushing it.

For reference, I take it when I fly and am fine. But, I could not do a boat ride of any serious length without the more serious meds (very drowsy type). On rides, I can do roller coasters, but not spinners or motion simulators. The meds would help with the simulators - but I would still shut my eyes some to avoid the full effect. Spinning, no way, not even with meds.

So, in short, if you are anything like me, no Teacups.

Ginger Root, 550mg, Rexall, Walmart. The directions show to take one capsule twice daily preferably with meals.

We have been using the same thing for 3 years (week-long trips to Disney). My DH & DD's have also used it for long car rides, plane trips, or anything that might cause motion sickness.

Bonine and Less-Drowsy Dramamine work, but they still make me sleepy. With half a pill I get half the motion-sickness, and I'm half as sleepy.

I use ginger now. :)

To the OP, just FYI, Dramamine does not make a "non-drowsy" formula, its actually called "Less drowsy". So it will probably still make you a little sleepy, I know it makes me a little sleepy. I'd steer clear of Dramamine and go with something else just for this reason, unless you are planning to take a nap midday. Good luck!
