We are staying near the DLR from 22 June til 26 June at the Camelot Inn. As we come from NZ (where clothes and shoes cost a bomb) we'd love to do a spot of shopping while we are in the US. I'm looking for clothes and shoes for me and Dp but mostly stuff for the kids. I have an 11 year old who wants cool shoes!!

Is there a mall or some good shopping to be had near the park? We don't have a car but we'd be wiling to take a taxi if it wasn't too far.

Thanks guys :thumbsup2

There is a Walmart in Anaheim that is not too far away from DL. It pretty much has all your bare essentials. :thumbsup2

Otherwise, the local malls and surrounding shopping centers aren't too far away either. It's all within 1-5 miles (1.6-8 Kilometers). :3dglasses

In terms of "good shopping," you have some of the best shopping in the world at South Coast Plaza and in Beverly Hills.

South Coast Plaza is probably about 20-30 minutes depending upon traffic and Beverly Hills is pretty far, but AMAZING shopping (and close compared to NZ :rotfl:). There is probably a tour bus of some sort that you could buy a ticket to get up to Beverly Hills (and the famous Rodeo Drive) and back.

As for malls near Disneyland, you have the Block at Orange about a 10 minute taxi ride from Disneyland. It's in no way South Coast Plaza (one of the top malls in the United States), but it has department stores and individual shops, restaurants, etc....

Is Garden Walk still there? I heard something about it going bankrupt and I don't know if they still have all the small stores or just the resatuarants. Anyway, when we went last summer all they had was clothing stores. In fact, that is why I thought it was so boring. If you don't need clothes, all there is to do there is eat. It is walking distance from Disneyland.

Years ago, there was a free bus that took you to from the hotels by DLR to South Coast Plaza. Don't know if they still have anything like that now. :confused3

I remember that back in the day...as teens my sister and I took the bus to the mall while my parents went to Tijuana for the day. I cannot imagine doing that in this day and age!

I just looked it up and there is still a shuttle. It's not free, but it's pretty reasonable when you consider taxi cost.

Garden walk is still there. It is a mall in walking distance from your hotel. Here is a site with a list of the stores. Looks like Sketchers is the main shoe store there. They have sneakers and sandals. I think the reason I found it dull was that the stores are all chains that I have at my local mall. Since you are coming from far away it might be more exotic to you.

I think the shuttle sounds like a good idea and it takes you a bigger mall with more choice. My DS11 would not wear Sketchers shoes. :cool1:

Being a local, this is the type of thing I just don't know about. EXCELLENT tip!

frazzle, I would look into this option. South Coast Plaza is an amazing shopping center with more shops than you could tackle in 1 day.

South Coast Plaza is your best bet. It's very easy to get to as well. Without traffic, it's a 15-20 min (tops) ride.

IF you are just staying in Anaheim on your trip then these suggestions are fine. But if you are heading anywhere else on your trip I might be able to help with ideas. Compared with NZ, most of the malls are bigger, carry the brands you will be looking for etc for. Many of the big chains are also in high street locations if you are going to be in San Diego, or SF as well.

For super cheap you might want to look out for specialist outlet malls.

For an alternative, maybe on your your way home through LAX, you could detour via santa Monica which has a very nice pedestrian mall, with plenty of great shopping options. Its only a short distance form the airport, and in a couple of hours you could do quite a bit.

Have fun!

Hey frazzle

We were there in October visiting from Australia (where clothing also costs a mint :confused3 ).

While we were there we went on a bus tour that took us to some outlet malls. We spent a fortune (and had more shopping bags by far than anyone else on the bus :thumbsup2 ). I would highly recommend the tour, it was great. As for cool shoes, we went to a Converse outlet store where they had a 2 pairs for $30 sale, now that's what I call a sale :thumbsup2

Hi Frazzle (from a fellow Kiwi!)

I really really suggest you hit the outlet shopping. Oh my G,..... it is just so awesome! You have a few choices but the two main ones are either Citadel Outlets (closer) or Desert Hills Premium Outlets (further away but bigger). Both have tour buses that will pick you up from your hotel and return you to your hotel at the end of the day. I really do suggest you consider these. Google search both outlets and see which one would suit you best.

There will be just so many choices of things to buy for your whole family!

Another suggestion is Target. Have a look at Target. com and you will be able to see some of the things they have. Okay don't suppose it will have nike etc. but they do have brands such as mossimo (sp?) sooo much cheaper than NZ. They also have really cheap makeup. An example is the maybeline (sp?) brand of mascara I use is $20 here and I picked some up for $3.80! Now even with the exchange rate (which I noticed is on the way up :thumbsup2) that's still cheap. I suggest you go and check out what colours, brands etc. of makeup you would like here so when you get there you don't have to spend time trying them, you can just put them in your basket ;) !

Target is on Harbour B. - you have either taxi it or jump on the ATR and get off at the closest stop. Target will also have awesome toys, stationery, craft stuff etc. etc. for your kids to spend their money on. and they would be able to pick up their supply of USA lollies etc. to take home.

Have fun - we will be there Oct 3-8.

South Coast Plaza sounds amazing but since we are on a quick trip I don't know if we'll have the time to go that far. I was thinking more of 3 or 4 hours and then back to the park. The Block at Orange or the outlet tours might suit us better. I'll google them and decide what to do from there

Kiwtinkerbell, we will pop in to to Target for the makeup, toys etc but I was just looking for some cooler shops for Mr 10 going on 18 who wants some Globe hightops or similar.

Thanks again for the tips. Us kiwis and aussies have to make the most of the shopping in the US as clothing and shoes (just about everything actually) cost a lot more down under.

I know what you mean by Mr 10 going on 18! ;) It has to be the right label etc.! I really think going to the outlets would be a good idea for you but don't think you could do it in 3-4 hours. Remember the stores in the US are open much later than they are here in NZ (like 8 or 9pm). When you search and check them out, it will list their opening hours.

Main Place in Santa Ana is just down the freeway a couple of miles. It's a great mile with lots of choices--and the kids' Discovery Place science museum.
