A pregnant co-worker just told us she is thinking of naming her daughter Noel. When she said it, I assumed she meant Noelle, but she spelled it out as Noel, like the boy's name. Is it common to spell it this way where you are? I've only known males named Noel (nole) and females named Noelle (no-ell).

I looked it up on behindthename.com and it only listed it as a masculine name.

I have a female diser friend named Noel

My cousins name is Noel, she is female and 40 years old.

I don't think I have ever met someone with that name, but "Noel" as a female name was the first thing to come to mind. I think it's kind of pretty actually. Maybe it's because my daughter is listening to Christmas music right now, and I think the song "Noel" is such a sweet song--like a baby girl.

I've just only heard Noel pronounced "nohl" (like Noel Coward) and if someone were wanting to use to pronunciation "no-ell", it would be spelled as Noelle. Noel just seems so masculine to me.

My daughter's middle name is Noel - and pronounced Noelle. I never even considered spelling it Noelle.

She is probably specifically naming her after the Christmas Noel and wants it spelled that way. I've seen females spelled both ways.

One of my best friends legally changed her name from "Noel" to "Noelle" as an adult. She was tired of being thought a man and having her name mispronounced.

We have the opposite problem, lol.

My DH's first name (he goes by his middle) is Noel, after his father. He always has had it pronounced "no-ell" like the girl's name wherever he is. We gave it to our ODS as a middle name so he wouldn't have to go through that as well.

Around here, all the Noel's that I know are spelled N.O.E.L.

I only know one female with that name and it is spelled "Noel". But she was born on Christmas so that may be why her parents chose that spelling.

I've seen Noel with the accent over the "e" many times pronounced NO-EL.

My grandfather's name was Noel. Several family members and close friends chose to honor my grandfather by naming their children after him. We've got a Nola (female), four male Noel's, two female Noell's and another two Noel's (both female spellings pronounced as "No-ell").

Spelling it Noelle for the pronunciation "no-ell" just looks wrong to me. :)

I know several Noel's and they are all spelled that way, all female. I don't know of anyone that spells it Noelle. It was a pretty popular name when I was growing up.

I have never know a male named Noel. I have known 4 female Noels (all prounced No-elle) as well as one with it as a middle names (Joyce Noel; it sounds like Joyous Noel when you say it outloud together. Her sister was Holly Day). 2 of these were from Colorado, one from Texas (plus Joyce Noel also from Texas) and one from Inidanna--so I am not even sure if it could be a regional thing:confused3

I would never think of Noel as a mans name....my daughter has a little girl in her class named Noel and we also have a female cousin named Noel.

I'll weigh in on the other side - I've only known male Noels ("Nohl") and female Noelles.

I guess in French (?) Noelle would be the female version of Noel?

I have known a few girls named Noel. It's how they spell it for Christmas, right?

However, this name was our top pick if we had a girl...and we would have spelled it Noelle.

My DD (she is 10 now) was born at Christmas time and her middle name is "Noel" and pronounced "No-Ell." You know, the christmas song is "No-ell, No-ell...the angels did sing..."" and it is spelled Noel.

Also, remember that Taylor, Tracy, Cameron...these were all traditionally male names. Now you mainly hear them for girls.

My FIL scolded us for using a male name as a middle name...but then again, he also told me I was "fat" one month after I had his grandchild...so I don't really listen to his opinions much! :cool1:
