You guys are talking way too fast for me now. I'm really having a tough time keeping up.

I saw that we were voting on some of the wonderful logos that have been suggested, but I looked on the website and couldn't find a place to vote.

Also, I'd be interseted in joing a facebook page for our cruise. I saw this discussed, but has it been set up yet?

So now can someone tell me what airlines you are taking from BCN and can someone give me any information on where to stay for a family of 4 who want to see the tourist stuff - buckingham palace, big ben, the eye, etc.

Krisann

Hi Krisann -

We're actually leaving BCN on Monday morning after the cruise, and heading to London for a few days. We're flying on BA since it's a direct flight into LHR, and Derek/Drew are flying on that day to Florida while Mark and I head into London proper. For the most part, BA has flights for about $100/one way to Heathrow, and sometimes the same price for London City Airport (although LCY is on smaller regional jets - if you have any preference there). Of course, there's EasyJet and some of the other discount airlines, but...let's just say I'm a mileage junkie. :)

I lived in London 11 years ago now, and I often go back to visit friends and family, the most recent being April 2009. This last time, a friend suggested that I try to Luna and Simone Hotel near Victoria for a cheap and cheery sort of accommodation. Derek and I were pleasantly surprised, it was a nice room, good breakfast (tea, toast, eggs, beans, bacon), free internet, and right on the 24 route bus line and a fairly easy walk to Victoria station. We peeked in a family "suite" - there was one double/queen bed and two single beds, although I don't know if that's a common setup or not - I know they have rooms that will sleep four at least.

Since you're a Military family, there's two hotels/MWR accommodations in London you may want to look into. Since the US and the UK typically have reciprocal agreements, they may offer you and your family some of the special rates given to UK military families as well. The Union Jack Club - www.ujclub.co.uk and the Victory Services Club - www.vsc.co.uk might be good for you to look into as well.

This was Derek's first time to London, so I wanted to definitely wanted this to be more of a "touristy" visit for him, and this was perfect. The 24 bus line goes by Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Scotland Yard, Houses of Parliament (and you can take off on a River cruise here or go to the London Eye, Royal Festival Hall, Cleopatra's Needle across the river), Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, all the way up to Camden Town. From there, there's easy tube or bus connections to just about all the other tourist sites as well. It was nice to be able to leave the hotel, cross the street, and head out for the day to where we wanted to go next.

London Key Tourist Bus Routes: http://www.visitbritain.co.uk/trave...n-transport/buses/popular-tourist-routes.aspx Good PDF and info for you, just to help making hotel or other plans.

We were in London for a week, and I think we took about 2 tube rides, but spent most time traveling on buses. Many visitors to London are intimidated by the buses, and in some cases it can be a little longer than the Underground. However, part of the whole charm is to see it from a window above ground, I think.

With that thread, if I made a sandwich I was 30 pages behind.

- I stayed in Kensington in the Boy Scout hostel run by Meininger. We had a room to ourselves (since the girls were under 18 and therefore can't be housed in a "dormitory" room with non-family, per hostel's rules). Beds were comfortable (twins / bunks) with our own bath unit (think train or other smaller facility). Next to the science? museum, easy walk to the subway, Pret a Manger sandwich shop and Burger King + groceries just down the road, along with starting point for hop-on hop-off double deck bus tour. Very safe feeling area, not so street-busy feeling.

- Segway is not a Disney excursion. But since I did a Segway tour of Waikiki last year, Karen has been itching to do one, too. We are booked in the morning with Barcelona Segway Glides (the oldest Segway tour in Barcelona) - but they have a minimum age of 16, I believe. There is a newer company, Barcelona Segway Fun, that allows younger.

There are restrictions which may apply:

What age do you have to be to drive one?
There is no age limit though we advise older than 16 years of age or accompanied by parents.

Is there a weight limit?
You must weigh between 45 and 100 Kg (99 - 220 lbs)

Lynne

Thanks for the info on the segway tour - hubby and i are doing the one at epcot on the morning of his birthday and the kids really want to do one but they are 13 and 15 (when we get to Barcelona) so I guess we will just wait for another time to do it. I normally stick to the disney excursions so I wil have to ook into the one with the suggested ages.

Krisann

Lynn, is there a link to the Segway tour info on the web site?

Michelle, I still need your info for Palo brunch. I'm only at 11 people right now, we need a min. of 12. Would flowers make up for the nagging? :flower3:

Krisann, I don't know if this helps at all, but for Europe, we appreciate reading reviews at TripAdvisor.com. Just read them with a grain of salt, since some of the comments seem fake (posted by competitors/reviewers with 1 comment under their belt). :thumbsup2

We visited London in 2005 and loved our stay at the Darlington Hotel. Darlington Hotel was very close to Paddington Station (in a quiet, upper-class residential neighborhood) but just a few Underground stops away from the major tourist sites. They offered us a free upgrade upon arrival, the room was large, and the free breakfast was better than many we've had in Europe.

We would definitely stay there again.

I love some of the logos and would like to get some magnets with them but I do not know how t o make them. I do not have one of those machines that someone mentioned.

Do you have a printer? I just save the images by right clicking, save as..., and print them on paper and laminate (have a machine at work) or print on card stock and then cut pieces of magnetic tape to put on the corners. Magnetic tape is a strip of magnet that is sticky on the back. I think I got mine at Michaels. I still have some leftover after doing enough magnets for at least 3 doors.

I'm having such a hard time trying to decide on which excursions I would like to book. Anyone else having a hard time? Since I'm travelling solo, I am going to stick with DCL excursions, I just don't feel confident enough to go out on my own at any of the ports.

I'm having a hard time, too. I'm trying to get a group together for people with limited mobility. Would all the people interested in doing things together please email me? Do not PM me. I need to be able to send the same info to everyone at the same time and I don't know how to do that thru PMs. I have been looking at going on 1/2 day tours thru private tour operators. I have found info on cruise critic on all cities except Cadiz. If I don't hear from people this week so we can all decide together, I'll just book DCL tours for myself. No problem. Just let me know. So far, there have only been maybe 4 others interested. I'm not sure if that's enough for a group. I've seen min people 8 on one site - another says up to 6 people is 400 euros...this is for Barcelona. Tell me what you want me to do.

Been away for awhile and it looks like we're on the road even more! :confused3 Just checking in and trying to read all of the posts. :scared1:

OK -- here's a question. We are up to 12 or 13 for Palo brunch once I get Michelle's info. That means we still have 1 or 2 spots. Anyone else wants to join us for brunch at Palo? if I get more than 2 people we'll start an alternates list. Here are the confirmed people.

Kathe - katypop
Linda - stlouiskeeler
Kristi - bound2travel
Dee - dee47
Lynne - auntlynne

ok more plans made today for our before trip to WDW:

Changed our package from deluxe dining to quick service dining plan saving us $500! We figured out we can use our snack credits at our resort for a small breakfast.

We then booked the Segway Tour at Epcot for 8:30 on Friday for Ashley's birthday - the kids will hang out in epcot while we do the tour.

Now to figure out how and when we are coming home from europe.

Krisann

Nice going.

We went around the world with one carry-on each.

Woody

:confused3 I have no idea how you do it?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Last TA we had 14 suitcases, not small ones either. This time I have to deal with the baggage constraints and I have no idea how I am going to pull it off!!! :lmao:

Have you watched Rick Steves on PBS? He's the guru for packing light.

Woody

Yeah well he does not have two princesses with him who LOVE to dress up EVERY NIGHT! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I can't even use them as an excuse. I am just such a heavy packer but in these new ages of luggage restrictions I am going to find better ways!

KrisannB - Is your husband active duty military? DH's has deployed to Iraq for 4 times for a total of 29 months. We are not sure what is next on the agenda for us, only time will tell.
