I was responding specifically to a post that suggested we were moving backwards as a society. There are people who believe that the past has some kind of monopoly on decency and morality. The term "good old-fashioned values" suggests to me the belief that the past was a better time; that we are crumbling in a sea of decadence; that unless we step backwards to those purer times we are doomed. HeII in a handbasket!!! Sound familiar? It is the same reactionary jargon used by leaders to put fear in the masses. I am glad our society continues to be progressive, despite the obvious growing pains and serious societal problems. Good values and morals belong to no time or place or people and those who think the past was better probably weren't women, minorities, gay, disabled, chronically ill, or dirt poor.

I find it odd, and a bit frightening, that these men need to be so "public" about their relationship with their daughters.

My father was just there. I knew he loved me, he taught me self-respect, he taught me how a gentleman treats a lady, he taught what I didn't have to take form anyone...man or woman.

And he did it without all this fanfare.

Actually, they had this on Wife Swap...where I get all my valuble current news...

The son had a Purity Ring and the wife/mom gave them to her 'swap family girls' before she left. The oldest girl was twenty or so and quite a wild child but was determined to live a better life so she wore it to remind her of her new lifestyle.

I totally agree! As I said my son did True Love Waits which is an awesome program. It does teach abstenance but then they also discuss that God is a forgiving God and if a mistake is made it is forgiven. We actually had a teen girl become pregnant a few months ago and the entire youth group (adults and children) have been so supportive or her and are right there for her. EVERYONE makes mistakes.

Like someone else said, I agree with the concept of abstenance........was I? No! My son was conceived out of wedlock even though DH and I did get married and have been married happily for 17 years BUT everyone is human, people make mistakes, everyone does and when mistakes are made support needs to come from the church and parents.

I kind of got off the point there, my point is while the idea is great, taking vows to your FATHER AT 9 YEARS OLD and ONLY GIRLS is just crazy!

i'm just trying to figure out what part of "sex" is a mistake?
