This whole idea is so disturbing on so many levels, I can't even begin to put into words my thoughts! Not only is this terribly creepy, it is irresponsible for parents to think this is a cure all for pre-marital intercourse. Never mind the incredibly paternalistic approach to it. If you really want to get creeped out, google it. There is a site that shows a video. Part of the ceremony shown has seven girls in white ball gowns carrying in a large cross, and setting it up in the middle of the ballroom. Then the seven dance around it for several minutes. Looks like something you'd expect of the druids or Vestal virgins. Takes the "Ewwww factor" to a whole new level.

I remember reading studies that unwanted teenage pregnancy is more prevalent among young women who pledge to remain celibate than among those provided sex education. FWIW.

I remember somethig like that as well. A few years ago there was a large debate here on the type of sex education to be taught in the middle schools. I recall one US study that said in states that had abstinence only education, there was a higher rate of teen pregnancy and std's.

Many fathers at the ceremonies also slip "purity rings" around the finger of their misty-eyed daughters or offer them "chastity bracelets" and other jewelry that the girls can entrust to their husbands on their wedding night.

Ah, life in dark ages! That's what's going on with the sons and mothers. Mom's busy teaching Junior how to properly "own" a wife some day.

Remaining pure is a personal choice. Sex life (or lack thereof) is a deeply personal thing. What you do with it is private. Having a announcement and big dance about it just seems so absurd.

Also, what do the girls who have no daddy around do? Are they not allowed to come to the Purity Ball? Not everyone has a 2 parent home anymore or are they too busy living in 1950 to see this?

I personally would not have such a ceremony, but I think the principles and ideas behind it are sweet and wholesome, not creepy. Of course, if the parents have such a ceremony for girls, there must be one for the boys -- no double standards.
