OK I am looking for a cheap/free time killer at walt disney world. We are staying off site and plan to spend most of the day at downtown Disney and have reservations at 1900 park fare for a character meal. Is there anything free at any of the monorail resorts like a playground of something that my 4 year old would enjoy? Port Orleans Riverside had a playground but it wasn't really themed or anything. DO the monorail resorts not have a playground? I know we can ride the monorail but not use the pools. Are the playgrounds open to the public or just for guests at that resort? What else can we do without spending a small fortune?

The WL has a playground on the beach. Just take the boat from MK over there. Also Fort Wilderness has a great playground right by the boat launch/HDDR area and you can take a boat there as well.

Thats a good suggestion. Can I take a boat from the Grand Floridian to Wilderness Lodge?

No, they are 2 different boat runs.

1-MK, GF and the Poly
2-MK, Wilderness Lodge and Ft wilderness
3- Wilderness Lodge, Contemporary and Ft. wilderness.

Fort Wilderness also has a petting zoo but I can't recall right now how far it is from the boat launch.

If you want to go over and spend time exploring Fort Wilderness(petting zoo, campfire and movie in the evening, playground, beach area, ect) I would suggest driving over there instead of staying in the GF parking. If you just want to spend a few minutes at the playground than you can probably leave you car at the resort and boat over.

Fort Wilderness also has a petting zoo but I can't recall right now how far it is from the boat launch.

Its not exactly a petting zoo but the stables are pretty awesome. They're a few minutes walking distance from the HDDR area. Maybe park at the CR instead and then you can take a boat to FW or WL.

Fort Wilderness all the way! We go there every trip no matter where we are staying. Parking at CR is a good idea but either way monorail to Cr and take boat or switch boats and check it out. The play ground is excellent, the boat ride is as good as any attraction, and the stables are amazing. There is a small petting zoo with cheap pony rides next to the playground, but the stables are a must for us every trip wherever we stay. You often get to see Cinderella's pony's getting a bath or the other parade show horses in the stables. Fort Wilderness is a beautiful peace of Disney americana. It is one of the first resorts, beautiful beach, great playground, cute gift shops, horses are so beautiful, take time to talk to stable staff. Really unique and an extremely peaceful fun and relaxing escape in orlando

You can also do a loop and get off at WL after Fort Wilderness, explore the geiser, beautiful lobby and smaller playgroud, play tether ball etc.
