No Peppermint Ice Cream! :-(

FWIW - my DH also loves eating Peppermint Ice Cream on Main St. with all the holiday decorations. He was so disappointed this year. To make up for it, we ate at Big Thunder Ranch BBQ (which he had always wanted to but we just hadn't done yet). When they mentioned desserts - he was thrilled! Baked brownie with peppermint ice cream and hot fudge to pour yourself. I just now asked him if it was the same as Gibson Girl. He thought it was delicious and couldn't tell the difference. This one was more melted (on top of hot brownie and under hot fudge) and not in a waffle cone on Main St - so he says his senses were all off but he liked it better than average grocery store peppermint...

Ok, Miss Sherry, thanks a lot for forcing me to go to Raley's last night with DD for a carton of Dreyer's Grand Peppermint Wonderland ice cream!!! We actually went in our jammies. Well, they were fleece bottoms and sweatshirts but still--that's not like me :p. Mmmmmmmm. The good news was that it was on sale for $2.99. The bad news is that it was on sale for $2.99 and therefore made it that much easier to decide that today I must buy multiple cartons. Do you have any idea what this will do to my plan to limit calorie intake this season? :lmao:

Must admit that I've never succeeded in that before

I'm confused. I was at Gibson Girl this Sunday (24th) and there was a stand-up sign on the counters advertising the Peppermint stick ice cream. I wasn't ordering...only standing in line with someone so I didn't pay attention to see if anyone actually ordered it. But why would the sign be there if they weren't offering it? :confused3

Dryers makes peppermint ice cream, not peppermint stick ice cream.

Maybe they got suddenly got some peppermint ice cream in stock (hopefully)? Are you sure the sign was advertising the actual ice cream itself, or was it advertising a cone? When I was at Gibson Girl and Clarabelle's on 11/15, the signs on the counters were advertising the actual holiday cone...which is what prompted me to ask if the ice cream was available.

The ice cream was not in stock at that time, and they were not expecting to get it in. Every year they make a couple of different holiday cones at Gibson Girl, one of which is encrusted with bits of crushed candy cane and the other is covered in red and green sprinkles and chocolate. The above sign only appears to represent one type of holiday cone and not both.

If you saw a sign that actually advertised the peppermint ice cream, then that leads me to believe someone at DLR suddenly got hold of some ice cream in the last few days and put it at Gibson Girl. Either they (DLR/Gibson Girl/Clarabelle's) complained enough to Dreyer's and Dreyer's finally sent some peppermint ice cream over in the sizes needed (Peppermint Stick was the old name of the ice cream, so Gibson Girl might still be referring to it as that instead of Peppermint Wonderland), or... someone behind the scenes ran out to some local stores and bought it, bringing it back to Gibson Girl.

I have to second this! After reading the posts about the ice cream and the confirmation of exactly what kind of Dreyer's is used I went out scouring the stores to find it. Two stops later I had the last two cartons they had in hand and went home to enjoy the yum and pretend I was sitting on Main Street.

I can't speak for the Ghirardelli in DCA, but years back I had a Peppermint Sundae at the Ghirardelli shop in WDW during the holidays and it was definitely peppermint ice cream and not just vanilla with candy bits in it.

I'm very disappointed, they don't have any peppermint ice cream anywhere this year for Christmas. According to the CM, they "were supposed to get it", but didn't. :-(

That is just NOT right!!! Absolutely terrible. What's a trip to Disneyland over Christmas without peppermint icecream? :rotfl2: Seriously, I LOVE peppermint icecream, but only let myself buy it ONCE during the holiday. As tempting as it is to buy it when it first hits the shelves (or should I say freezers? :lmao: ) I have to watch my waistline.

My pant size expands, but its what I do for you guys. Had the Ghirardelli's peppermint (11/19) and then went to the store and bought the full fat, Dryers ice cream. its the same. Peppermint pink ice cream with candy chucks. Totally the same.

I can't wait to see for myself what Ghirardelli is selling! At least Ghirardelli accepts the AP discount (or did at one point), whereas Gibson Girl does not. So if they are truly selling Grand Peppermint Wonderland and not Slow Churned Peppermint Wonderland (and I will know the difference as soon as I see it!), at least a discount is available on their expensive ice cream prices!

Aaaaaahhh...that may have been the sign I saw. I didn't pay very close attention to it. Sorry to all those peppermint ice cream lovers out there!

So just for fun, while I was finishing up my Thanksgiving grocery shopping, I picked up a tub of Slow Churned and a tub of Grand Peppermint Wonderland. I'm a Vanilla girl, so rarely do I step out of my comfort zone, but I thought it would be fun to have a taste-test amongst the family, so I could see what all the fuss was about :).

The results are in, and hands-down the Grand wins 4-1. DD1 is keeping the entire tub of Slow Churned to herself, because the rest of us think it's not so great. She on the other hand, calls it 'marshmallowy'.

I'm hoping the Grand is somewhere in the park because it reminds me of when I was little and my Dad would pour Creme de Menthe on my Vanilla ice cream as a treat. Just peppermint vs. spearmint. YUM :)

Mmm-hmmm. So we have another vote for the Grand. You see? This is what I have been talking about endlessly in the Superthread (and in previous trip reports I've done, and in this thread... and... and...)! The Slow Churned is the Impostor ice cream. People who have only had the Slow Churned without trying the Grand first may not know the difference, but once you've had Grand first it's hard to 'settle' for the inferior variety!

I'm glad to see that I have coaxed a few more people to board the Peppermint Wonderland train! I am lucky if I can even find the ice cream at my store because people swoop in and hoard it, but I hope everyone else enjoys it! Lol.

Actual pink peppermint ice cream, with crushed up pieces of peppermint candy/cane canes in it, or white/vanilla ice cream with peppermint bark? There is a difference. If it's the former, yay! I'll be all over it. If it's the latter, I'll pass!

Yep, definitely pink ice cream with small candy bits--we even discussed sending someone back to Clarabelle's to see if they would sell us just the chocolate-dipped peppermint-dusted cone so we could combine them ourselves... :lmao:

We did not ask who the manufacturer was, but as we hail from the North Bay area, I am aware that Dreyer's has been known to supply specialty flavors for Ghirardelli in the past, so it would not surprise me to find out it was them. I have some Peppermint Wonderland in the freezer, and it was very similar, if not exactly the same.

We were there for the LTM AP WOC holiday event, so it was available the week of 11/15...hopefully it will be there season-long for the rest of you addicts!!

After all this talk, I now have a tub of the Grand Peppermint Wonderland in my freezer. :thumbsup2 It will have to wait until after the pumpkin pie is gone, but it will be a perfect treat after we decorate the tree this weekend. Thanks, Sherry E!

I noticed at Target tonight that they had the Dreyer's GRAND Peppermint Wonderland ice cream (not the slow churned). So if you're looking for this at home and your grocery store is out, try Target. I immediately thought of this thread/the DIS/Sherry when I saw it. I almost even bought some...until I remembered that I don't like peppermint ice cream... (...ducks and runs)

I wanted to give a final update on this very important subject of the peppermint ice cream shortage ;) while it was still fresh on my mind, and in case some of you didn't see my update about it in the Christmas/Holiday Season Superthread when I got back from DLR last week.

I wanted to get to the bottom of the mystery because bits and pieces of info were coming in from different sources and certain things were conflicting.

On my first day at DLR last week I marched over to Ghirardelli -- one of the places that was reportedly carrying the peppermint ice cream according to at least a couple of folks, even though DIS'er longtimedisneylurker said it was not there anymore.

The Ghirardelli CM elaborated a bit on what I had already learned from the Clarabelle's CM back in November. It is apparently not just that Dreyer's "won't send the right size," as I'd been told. It's partially that, but the bigger issue is that Dreyer's is no longer making the tub size (in that specific peppermint flavor) that DLR needs to keep in stock.

Usually, every year, the ice cream can be found at the expected locations such as Gibson Girl and Clarabelle's. The Main Street Cone Shop had it in the past as well. This year, for some weird reason, at the very beginning of the holiday season -- like early to mid-November -- Dreyer's sent the peppermint ice cream to Ghirardelli (where no one had really thought to look for it before, because they don't advertise it), and also to sit-down restaurants such as the BBQ in Frontierland and the Blue Bayou!?!:confused3 Now, who would really think to be looking for peppermint ice cream at the table service restaurants is beyond me, and why Dreyer's sent it to those places instead of where they usually send it is beyond me, but there you have it.

So it is possible that some of the ice cream (left over from November) can still be found at the BBQ or at Blue Bayou -- maybe even in a couple of other table service restaurants around DLR as well. I would guess that those places kept the ice cream in stock longer than Ghirardelli did because, again, no one would expect to buy or find peppermint ice cream at those restaurants.

Ghirardelli eventually ran out of the ice cream and they will not be getting anymore in. The CM there told me in no uncertain terms that Dreyer's stopped making the tub size they need, and will no longer be supplying that flavor to Disneyland Resort (unless they get enough feedback or complaints to influence them, that is!;)). She wasn't sure why they ever got it in stock in the first place this year, or why it would have been sent to the BBQ or the Blue Bayou (maybe they use different tub sizes??) but once Ghirardelli ran out of it that was it. All gone.

So it looks like any new shipments of the peppermint ice cream for future holiday seasons at DLR are not happening...for now. I have no clue why Dreyer's would not continue to supply DLR with the "right size tub." It's great exposure for them. It's not like they'd be wasting money on making a tub size for some mom & pop operation that no one had ever heard of. It's Disneyland!:confused3 How could they not want to keep their holiday ice cream in Disneyland?

Also, a Trolley Treats CM told me that she was trying to find the peppermint ice cream at her store -- when she realized that Clarabelle's wasn't getting any in stock this year -- and it was all gone. She was going to next look in Target. So Peppermint Wonderland continues to be elusive and mysterious...and in hot demand, apparently.

(Remember, the peppermint bark stuff at Haagen Dazs is not the same thing! Don't be fooled!)

Dreyer's also has a contract with Knott's Berry Farm, if I recall. What I am wondering is... could they have possibly sent the "right size tub" of Peppermint Wonderland to Knott's this year?? Hmmm...

Like I've posted before, yes the peppermint flavored premium Dryers ice cream is available at the Blue Bayou. I know that for a fact, as I had lunch there last Friday and asked my server about what kind of ice cream is available.

Gisele --

Yes, you have posted it before (and I just mentioned Blue Bayou in my above comments based on what you told us, so thank you very much!:goodvibes).

What I was saying was that it's likely there could be some "leftover" peppermint ice cream at some sit-down/table service places like BB (it was delivered to them at the beginning of the season) because, for one thing, no one would think to go to a sit-down restaurant (especially Blue Bayou) for peppermint ice cream when they can't get it in the actual ice cream shops.

And, for another thing, most people who just want the peppermint ice cream and don't want other food are not going to go to a table service restaurant to get it! I know that I am not going to go into the Blue Bayou or to the BBQ just for ice cream, no matter how much I love it.

So, because of those reasons I mentioned, it is likely there is still some ice cream left over from the beginning of the season at some table service places, including the BBQ and Blue Bayou (and maybe a few others we are unaware of). But it is totally gone from Ghirardelli and it was never delivered to Clarabelle's, the Main Street Cone Shop or Gibson Girl this year. Dreyer's is not going to be supplying that flavor to them anymore -- at least, as of right now. Hopefully Dreyer's will come to its senses and starting making the properly-sized tubs for DLR again in the future. The Ghirardelli CM wasn't even sure why they had gotten any in at the beginning of the season -- she said it almost seemed like "an accident"!:rotfl2: -- but when it ran out, that was it. No more peppermint ice cream.
