No more reselling kids clothes???

I just made an appointment at my favorite consignment store to bring in some clothes?? Wouldn't they be the first to know? Something does not seem right here!!!!!!!!!!!

When I walked into my local consignment store today, the owner just happen to be finishing a call with our congressman. Neither the store owner NOR our congressman was aware of this new law. The store owner is so upset as this could literally close her down. She is going to try and get some additional details and see if there are loopholes. I understand the safety side of this but, come on people, don't we have more important issues right now then needing "clothing police?" :scared: Arrrgggghhh!!!

All of this started with the child that ate the charm off a pair of shoes.

I would like to point out that this new law does not stop the accident that started all of this from happening again.

This is the first that I heard of this. And I can not believe it. What is next? I have so much stuff and I have been geting ready for a garage sale to have this summer. I mean 8 years of stuff :scared1: Now, I have to just throw it away. That is just wrong!!! Isnt' there anyway to stop this? What about the people that depend on these kinds of places to clothe their children?

If you feel strongly about this (like I do), then write your congressman. With the internet, it's extremely easy to send them a letter. I sent mine yesterday and am waiting for his response. He ususally has one of his staff persons get back to me in a few days/week at most.

After Feb 9th you can't just "throw them away". They will have to be disposed of as TOXIC WASTE.

I appreciate this thread. I brought this up to the head guy of a local thrift shop/food pantry in our area today. He hadn't heard of it - he had no idea what I was talking about. I have forwarded many of the articles, news segments to him to take a look at.

This sounds so ridiculous that it's hard for me to believe it's true. Our local thrift store is how many, many folks in this area get their clothing (children and adults). I cannot imagine how much clothing will waste if this does go into effect on February 10.

I wrote my Congressman. I wrote the local news channel. Every year, the news channel as well as my DD10's school holds a "Coats for Kids" campaign, I would hate to think clothes going to waste.

We donate clothes a couple times a year to charitys and women's shelters.

I called my congress person today who is a co-sponsor of this bill. They did give me some more insight into this. Not that I agree with it but if it goes into effect on Feb. 10th which it looks like it will. I was told that it has many sponsors and it looks like it will get voted it. They did make a not that I was not a supporter of it. I asked about Consingment Shops, etc. and they told me they will not be pemitted to sell these itmes unless they can prove that they have been tested. They did tell me that this is in hopes that new toys, and clothes will be made without these products.

Our school is supposed to hold a Consingment Shop Sale this Spring if it passes we will not be able to hold the Sale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is the consignment and thrift shops supposed to get a "tester" anyway? and how are they going to "police" said law?

I spoke with the owner of a local resell store (Kid to Kid) and he said that to test an item, you basically destroy it. So, there is no feasible way to test the item and then sell it.

mommytoone -- They will have to be disposed of similar to paint (you do know you can't throw out paint in a liquid state, right?), mercury (old thermometers) etc. What is that exactly, I don't know. But you will not be allowed to just throw them in the trash. :sad2:

I just did a brief search and found this...

Whether its cleaning supplies, paint, motor oil, fluorescent light bulbs, batteries…our friends at Green Nest recommend Earth911, a site that will help you determine how to recycle unwanted waste.

I don't have time to research that Earth911 website right now, but maybe someone will find something interesting there.

That's what I was wondering too. What is one of a kind? If a thrift store isn't effected unless they have multiples of the same item........What if someone donates identical outfits from a set of twins? Or...what if they all ready have, say, a Little Tykes dollhouse and someone donates another just like it, does that make it a multiple product?

I say we just "DONATE" all our used stuff to that guy who wrote the bill. Wonder how he would like to receive a gift of thousands of pounds of used toys and clothes. :lmao:

Nice job on the interview Disneylush.

What I hate about this if it does go into effect is that retail prices are going to SKYROCKET. We barely get by now and I rely on yard sales and thrift stores for the bulk of my DD5's clothing. She needs to stop growing.;)

I thought the exact same thing! If we can't donate it, trade it, sell it, or throw it away, I say we just send everything to D.C. :lmao: Let's see what they can do with it.

i just don't believe any of this! we live in America - I don't think this will happen not at all.

I can believe it. We've been suffering through No Child Left Behind for how long? At times the rule seems to be legislate first, figure out the problems later.

That's the problem. Too many people don't think they will do stuff like this, until it's too late.

What I don't get is how will the clothing on the shelves at stores be any safer on February 10 than on February 9? :confused3 What a waste of money.

I sell on etsy and this has been a hot topic of conversation for quite a while there. It's amazing how few people know about this. The news stories are trickling out, but it's been hard-fought to get attention to this issue.

The reason so many conflicting stories and information is coming out is because the CPSC is confused. They are desperately trying to clarify the law and did release some exemptions today for undyed cotton, silk, gemstones (as reported in the LA Times, but so far no position paper has come out from the CPSC that I've seen). Even the CPSC spokesperson has made statements (like about the One-of-a-Kind exemption) she has later retreacted saying she was misquoted. It's a can of worms!

And many have called their Reps. and Senators only to be told they know nothing of the legislation, yet this Bill sailed through both houses of Congress with I think only one vote of opposition.

Obviously we all want to protect kids. I have two kids myself. But the nature of the testing required in this law is often unnecessary and redundant at a HUGE cost that will put many, many small businesses under.

The thing to do now is learn more about it, and if you have the time, to PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE contact the CPSC with your comments and your elected officials. I'm confident that wisdom will prevail eventually!

This issue just finally hit the St. Louis news tonight. Of course they only had a one minute clip that didn't really explain much besides resale shops might not be able to sale clothes after the February date. I would have missed the news clip if I would have blinked. I was very disappointed with the news coverage because St. Louis has a huge resale market so the issue should have got way more coverage. I guess the theft of flat screen tvs is more interesting.

This fine gentleman here is the one who sponsored the bill. The bill was originally done in 1972. In 2008, the word "Improvement" was added to the name of the bill.

What concerns me is the party who will now run the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives is also the party of the gentleman who sponsored the bill.

If anyone here voted for this guy, then you are also partially responsible for this.

I hope this is an isolated case, but it will be something worth keeping an eye on.

OMG! I just heard on the news tonight, when they were talking about trying to end earmarks, that Rush had big dollar earmarks for the church where he is the minister (it was some kind of outreach program).

This just stinks!!! My kids are adults, but they wore lots of second-hand stuff when they were little.
