No more photos of redneck photo screens?

That's a shame if they do it.
Our son is in a wheelchair and it usually takes us some time to transfer him and settle him. I usually go ahead and take a picture of our ride photo to show him, otherwise they are usually gone by the time we all show up.

It would be nice if they could employ this technology on the dark rides. :mic:No flash photography permitted...

I'm pretty sure I saw that kind of technology somewhere else. I personnaly think it's a good thing to prevent people from having these pictures for free.

If you want to see it if you don't have time, you can always pass by the counter and they can look it up for you.

My boyfriend is in a power wheelchair, when we want to look at or purchase our picture from a ride, we have them look back through the photos for us, the CM's are happy to do it.

:thumbsup2

If this can be used to stop flash photography on dark rides the positives easily outweigh the negative of not getting a free photo.

Maybe.

I assume there are filters out there for DSLR's which would filter out the infrared - so hopefully those who know what they're doing and do NOT use their flash to take dark ride photos will still be able to get some shots.

Although I suspect they're gonna have a lot of unhappy guests if they use this to prevent all photos on all rides.

I'm not certain but i think some cameras use infrared as a sort of sonar/lidar to determine distances to focus with (and determine if flash is appropriate- if you are focusing on 300 m away then there's no point to flash. IF the camera can't focus it doesn't matter if you put a filter on the lense. Not sure how common it is.

i like how the patent apparently says:

countermeasures are needed to prevent the capturing of an image from a display monitor using an imaging device to obtain quality images of high value content.

how about you charge a fair price so people dont want to steal? lol

I've actually purchased quite a few of the ride photos. One of my favorite photos is on my desk at work of me, the wife, and kids on splash mountain when they were real little. Typically now a days i am a sucker and we get the card that gets them all.

But one time i wasn't thinking and it was way late and my little one just wanted to wait the bajillion hours for her 'first ride' on something. When it was over there was no way she was going to wait for the picture and it wasn't that important to us but i figured i might as well snap a picture with my smart phone literally as we walked by- i'm not even sure i stopped to. You would have thought i was trying to take a picture of top secret documents the way the CM's swooped in to tell me not to. It was an honest mistake on my end and they were on me like a criminal. it was funny.

I really had no idea they cared about some crappy cell phone picture of a crt monitor full of glare and crazy background along with a funky keystone from the upward angle. It totally made me laugh how upset they got.

This is interesting on a couple of levels....

on one hand, they want all the photos to be tied in to their new smart system to sell more product - particularly at hotels and from home...

on the other hand, there is a financial benefit to the ride dump photo stations...though i bet that has decreased returns over the years as the photopass has been planted.

So...maybe the on ride photo desks might just go away?
I could definitely see that too...on ride photos go straight to the smart bands.

and why would they do that? two $7.50 an hour employees...

yep...don't discout that.

And if the bands held the photos, you could have a limited time to view them once you get home before purchasing, and I would think people would be more likely to purchase.... in the not so great after glow of their vacation... just looking for anything that takes them back ... kind of like crack.

ride photos going straight to the bands is genius. They should be able to pull it off automagically with the 'long range' part of the band that knows where you are. (so they know which ride vehicle you are in) But at a minimum they could do self service stations where you just tag a mickey head under your photo or something. The impulse buy is very coveted.

BUT I wouldn't discount the ride dump CM's making $7.50 an hour. All they need to do is get one impulse buy an hour and they've already covered their salary.

So why not keep BOTH? CM at the end to grab the impulse shoppers. Then on your magic band to show you on your hotel room tv's screen saver or in an email when you get home to remind you in case you missed it.

they're pretty much already doing that today with non ride photos. They hold the non-ride photos for 45 days from the day they were taken and you can claim them with your photo-pass card (and now apparently your MB if you had the photog tap your band).

I never understood why they dont more easily link up the ride/event photos to the regular photo's. We're typically more apt to buy the ride or event photos.

They charge you a fee to hold all your 'plain' photos for another 15 days- but honestly i wonder if storage isn't so cheap now a days that they should hold onto them for months and months or years. If shuterfly can make money at it then why not disney? Imagine every november 1 they email you "hey did you do your photo christmas cards yet this year? Maybe one of your vacation photos from last year will work. For a limited time cards are just $10 each on special Disney paper with all your favorite characters embossed"

Probably the only limits are their horrid IT department. So I guess we should be happy they can pull it off for 45 days...

I didn't know they did that with the photopass. We are local and go so often we don't care much about photos. This christmas card idea is a good one-- surprised that is not available.

Google Glass much...??..:)

Disney probably figures they need to do this before the days of spotting someone whipping out a camera or cellphone are gone and many people are wearing the glasses and getting instant pictures before they can say/do anything.

interesting point.

I wonder if others wont be looking for ways to "block" photo's of certain things if/when google glass gets commonplace. I'd imaging gentlemen's clubs everywhere will be looking to purchase a license from disney for this technology- LOL.

Probably might start a cat and mouse game- if the Disney plan is overwelm with IR then they could just get an imaging sensor or filter in the device that blocks that wavelength.

I rode buzz lightyear 10 times in a row the other day and took a picture of my picture everytime, however I have been told not to take a picture at places like ToT comes to mind

Living in Virginia, we go to Busch Gardens a lot. I have seen employees swoop in on people trying to use their smartphones to take pictures of the screens when viewing the ride photos. A photopass plan would be a great idea for them. I'm sure if Disney goes the route of technology to block taking pictures of screens, other theme parks won't be far behind them.

They should be putting ride photos on photopass cards anyway.

I'm not going to look at a picture for 15 seconds or whatever and decide to buy it right there. If it was on a photopass card, maybe. But we move too fast from place to place to wait in line and carry that photo around all day so we can ruin it.
