Well, I guess it's official, saw it on two different new's reports. No more fishing at Walt Disney Resorts, including Fort Wilderness, unless on a paid excursion. So sad . We always looked forward to fishing in the canals and the pond in front of the bike barn.

I have no idea what fishing has to do with an alligator attack. Ugh, the more information that comes out the more angry this makes me. So much so, I want to cancel our upcoming trip because I don't want to feed into or be a part of this madness.

As stated in another post you will be able to fish from the pier in the pond at the Bike Barn and from the foot bridges just not any of the banks. Madonna3 from all your posts on these threads I can tell you are very upset at all that is going on at Disney right now so maybe a cancellation is in order for you upcoming trip. Then maybe as time passes you will once again want to return. Changes are part of life even at the most magical place on earth so each and every one of us has within our power to make the decision to go to Disney (or anywhere else) or not. I wish you peace in your decision whatever you choose.

Yeah, I'm pretty annoyed at the response. Personally, I'm all for letting this whole trip go and take my cash and go somewhere else, but the family is not on board with me.

I hope you are correct. This is the quote from the Orlando Sentinel: "No fishing" signs have been erected at areas including Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, the Fort Wilderness campground and Old Key West Resort. Fishing is now forbidden at Disney World unless it is part of an excursion". I assumed that meant in the pond also.

Guess I'll be doing more exploring and squirrel watching with the time I usually spend fishing. Not good news at all, but unless I'm a professional angler looking to catch the Florida record bass I'm not cancelling a trip over it.

Just means myself and the girls will have to catch our bass in advance here at the house.

It's a knee jerk reaction, yes, we all agree, but I'm not surprised by it. Disney took a serious image shot over this unfortunate incident as evidenced by the mass overreacting of talks of cancelling sites and rooms due to proximity of water. Can you imagine the hit it would take if somebody got grabbed off the old concrete dock near the canal at 300 loop?
Disney closing the canals and banks to fishing is an overreaction, but it's not the only overreaction I'm seeing.

Deep breath.... Often times changes are made in a reactionary way. Once cooler heads (and annoying lawyers) figure things out, there will be a new normalcy at WDW and the Fort. As Corgidad states, change is inevitable and it's a way of life. We just need to adapt at it. I too hope, that whatever you decide, you will be content with your decision.

I am here now and am getting all my information from the Recreatiion Managers who are in charge of all the outside activities at the Fort. I read the article in the Sentinel but the information in our check in package said fishing was still allowed from the two places I posted above. Hope this helps everyone.

Thanks Corgidad, appreciate you checking on this and letting us know.

Oh very cool!! I didn't realize you were there and getting first hand Disney info. What have they been doing about the fireworks and EWP? Are they allowing people on the beach or making them stand back on the grass? Any idea?

I guess you're right. Maybe my reaction can be seen as an overreaction too, but I guess I'm seeing it as "you people are going insane, I'm going to stay over here until you all figure this out" kinda deal. I'm not canceling anything because of proximity to water, in fact, I'm upset they're limiting my proximity to water along with everyone else.

No, I'm not going there to fish for record setting sport or anything like that. I just wanted my boy to be able to enjoy everything the Fort has to offer in a setting that I feel is a little more relaxed and care free.

I guess I should take my own advice and calm down and just go, have fun, and shrug this all off.

With all the todo over this incident I can't help but wonder about a few things. I know that the same changes we are seeing in The Fort are being duplicated at all resorts that have a beach or waterfront of some sort but what about bodies of water on property ? Have the water hazards on the golf courses been posted with signs warning of potential alligators presence? What about the assorted canals and ponds Disney Maintains to ensure Bay Lake and 7 Seas Lagoon are at a certain level?
Has POR changed the name of the section we have known as Alligator Bayou to avoid the connotation associated with gators ? Want to really do something about this. Below is the address for The Fort :
Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground
4510 N Fort wilderness trail
Lake Buena Vista Florida 32830

Let them hear from us how we have enjoyed the camping and shoreline fishing in the past. Wouldn't hurt to let them know how often you have been in the past how often you go each year and that you are now considering staying on the outside at places that allow this activity. Just my own thoughts

They better get busy building more fishing piers! Please pass this along. :)

Yeah, thank you so much for getting the correct info. We have three trips planned for this year and always look forward to fishing.
