no metal on swim suit?

I "heard" that you can't have ANY metal on your swim suit for the water parks. True? How closely do they look (dare I ask)?

The ONLY swim suits that look anywhere need ok on me are the two piece with the shorts for bottoms. I bought a tank type top that seems pretty sturdy, but the shorts have a small metal circle to drain the back pocket. Is that a problem? I really just can't find anything else - the normal bottoms just make my hips look HUGE!!! I need something to cover up with!!!

Please help me!!! I don't want to be embarassed and those shorts seem to be really popular, so I'm thinking they don't say anything.... but.....

thanks for your help.

I have similar swimming shorts that have the same small metal circle (actually I looked at my three kids' swimsuits as well, and though they are a different style, they have them too!). Having said that we all wore these swim suits during our last two trips to Blizzard Beach and never had a problem. I guess the reason is to prevent the slides from getting scratched, etc. The metal circle is so small and unless you are within inches of my batching suit you wouldn't notice it at all. I think the intent is to prevent people from wearing non-typical bathing suits, such as cut-off jeans etc, that may have snaps, buckles, etc.

We've worn our bathing suits w/o a problem....

Good question!
We went to the water park at Kings Dominion a year or so ago and they wouldn't let my son on the slides with that little metal "hole" in his back pocket!! Luckily it was an old bathing suit, so we just pulled out the metal grommett and then it was just a hole so they would let him on. I was really surprised that they would be that picky though - I though pretty much all men's and boy's bathing suits had those!

If you are talking about a standard little drainage grommet, about 1/4 in wide, you can fix it so that it won't cause you any difficulty on slides.

Just go and get a sewing needle and some thread that matches the color of the suit Knot the thread, and starting from the inside of the pocket, whip-stitch around the grommet perimeter so that the thread covers the metal. That is, push the needle through the pocket fabric from inside surface to outside just outside the metal edge, then pass the needle back through the center of the grommet hole, then do it again right next to the previous stitch, until you have gone all the way around. When you get to the end, knot the thread on the inside surface of the pocket and snip the excess thread end. Voila! No more exposed metal. Doing this should not take more than about 5 minutes; it will only take about 15 stitches.

DS and DH have eyelets like this on all their suits. They have never had a problem when the eyelets are painted the same color as the suit, but if the silver or brass color shows, I usually cover them with thread this way, just to be on the safe side.

What about little kids with one pieces that zip up in the front? (rashgaurd suits to pretect from sun) I thought they would be perfect for a waterpark but they do have a small metal zipper. I can't see how that could hurt a slide if they can't go down on their stomach. Anyone seen kids wearing something like this at a waterpark?

Will they let boys wear trunks and a rashgaurd shirt? There would be no metal there but I've had lifeguards at local pools make them remove their top saying shirts are not allowed on slides. (I argued they are more like swimsuits than shirts to no avail; they did make exceptions for girls wearing them.) I thought the one piece outfits would be a work around to the no shirt rule.

DS's trunks had the "metal draining hole" on the back pocket as well-- no issues at TL. I didn't even think of it when they said no metal to be honest. I was thinking more along the lines of zippers and metal decoration.

As far as wearing tops on boys-- unless it's metal it's not an issue. DS put on a tee for awhile during the extreme heat of the day to double protect against sunburn. Nobody stopped him from doing anything.

Sounds like it hasn't been an issue for anyone, but if it is, I can try to take it out or cover it with thread.

The zipper comment brought up another question. My 3 yr DS has a float wear swim suit and it has a zipper up the middle of the back!!! I was really thinking of taking it for him because he swims in our pool like a little fish WITH IT ON. I know there's life vest there, but...

Is there anyone out there who has had an issue with metal at the WDW water parks or pools?

Has anyone had their young kid wear a zip up suit?

Has anyone used the life vests for a 3 year old? Comments?

Thanks for your help. It's great to hear the experiences of others and to get all those tricks and tips.

I've got a metal buckle on the front of my swimsuit that's pretty big. I've worn it to BB and TL two or three times, and it's never been an issue.

I think that the restriction on metal on the swimsuits comes into play on the slides when they can damage the slides. If your little 3 yr old will not be going down the slides, I doubt it will be a problem.

Two questions:

1) Has anyone used the life vests at the water parks?

2) Has anyone had their young child wear a zip-up swim suit? Any problems?

3) I think I've come to the conclusion if the metal is a problem (including the 3 yr old's zipper), I'll put some tape over it. Has anyone done this? I was thinking about using duct tape.

Thanks for all the comments. It seems like others have had the same concern, but that WDW doesn't inforce the "no metal on swimsuits" rule.

We were at BB last month......6/3 to be exact. None of us had anything w/metal on our suits but I saw several young teen girls w/suits on that had either metal clasp on the front of their tops and a couple w/D rings on the waist like a belt. As far as I know, noone said anything to them. I agree w/what one person said earlier -- the rule is probably enforced to those that wear cut offs or similar.
