No matter how tight your budget is..

We used to stay at the Grand in Pigeon Forge and it was NICE! Sadly, a lot of the hotels in Gatlinburg/PF have gone to the dogs these days. They were bought by people who refuse to put any $ into them and they just go down from there.

My brother stayed at Hotel Carter as a desparate college student. He loves seeing it on the "worst" list every year!

His room did come with a pair of red heels in his size under the bed. :thumbsup2

Virginia Beach VA made the list again, though a different hotel than last year.

I should have posted pictures of the Days Inn in Charlottesville, VA - it was the nastiest, full of mold and stinkiest place. Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of choice, it was a football weekend at UVA and the city was full. (I considered sleeping in the car though)

My friends and I used to stay at #3 Desert Inn at Daytona beach in high school. It was nasty and dirty and smelly and creepy in 1995, lol. But we kept going back because of the $50 oceanfront view room! Of course, my standards have changed a bit with age.

In 2001 on our way from WDW we stopped by a Super 8 in Myrtle Beach, SC. It was truly the worst hotel I have ever experienced. When we had little money, we spent many nights over the years in mom and pop places, so we did not have really high standards like modern furniture. As long as the sheets were clean, we did not even care if they were matching sheet colors (been there, done that). Anyway, this Super 8 was really disgusting. It allowed pets and the ammonia from the pet urine made your eyes burn. A change of rooms made no difference. The bathrooms were dirty/moldy and the sheets looked slept in. I see now it has been recently renovated. I don't know how long ago the renovation was, but the place should have been shut down and leveled 10 years ago.

yikes!:scared1: i stayed at a motel once that was somewhat dirty, but more concerning was the owners still used actual keys, not those electronic keys. the door had problems locking too so we ended up sleeping with a chair jamming the door and a table in front of it. i think i would take a bit of mold for one night over a door that barely locks. the bad thing was it got good reviews on tripadvisor and no one mentioned faulty keys/locks.

Now be gone before somebody drops a cheap hotel on you!

Oh wait.. the shoes weren't being worn at the time...

Nevermind!

I used to work in the industry and I am really picky about the hotels we stay. Call me crazy but I inspect the room when we get there just as I would have before for my job. As far as the bed bugs go it is not a hotel problem more of a guest problem. Hotels have been trying to fight this always. We used to get some magazines and other info for hotels and some of the things you saw there were nasty!!! Also some in hotels you wouldn't even think.
I had to ask for room changes at WL because the room was not properly clean the phone had a big layer of dust, I figure if the phone that I can see is that dirty I cannot imagine how is under the bed  (I found some other problems too) Poor Dh I think he gets embarrassed because I usually ask if housekeeping can meet me at the room so I can show them what is wrong. But in reality I am just helping them something tells me the inspector probably skip that room at WL or maybe that is just what I want to think. Our second room was fine maybe the housekeeper went there and made sure before we got there :lmao:.

And here I thought I was the only odd ball who does this - LOL.. If it's not one of the Disney Resorts, I ask to see the room that I'm going to be getting before I register..

And yes - I have walked away from a few hotels..:rolleyes1

I worked as a housekeeper the summer in between high school and the Air Force. Back in those days, people still smoked in the rooms. And they used real glass drinking glasses. I was taught to just wipe out the glasses so that no lip marks showed - we had no way to replace them. And sometimes we used the same towel to wipe out the ashtray. To this day, if I stay in a room with real glass, I refuse to drink out of it!

GROSS! That makes me gag. I don't use glass glasses either because you can't tell if they've been washed, obviously my concern is valid.

Just to give some peace of mind. Now they are all picked up and washed at least in most hotels that I know of.
