No Matter How Much You Rail On Potterland

Last words: I'm glad we went, but it will take a huge overhaul of crowd control and more attractions to get me to go back.

And this is the most important criteria when deciding if it is a long term success, repeat guests. If the majority of guests only come once but on subsequent trips do not return or do not extend the time they were going to spend at US if WWoHP didn't exist I wouldn't consider it a long term success.

So, why is Pete saying one should wait to visit WWoHP? Because everything new has a time when it's hot, but eventually it slows down. Just because WWoHP will slow down doesn't mean it will be a failure. Heck, look at Expedition Everest at AK, sometimes that ride is walk-on towards the end of the day. Plus, Pete feels the experience will be much more enjoyable when there are less people in the area and the reviews pretty much agree with that.

Didn't JK Rowling have a great deal to do with the planning and was hands on for all the details? I recall from when Disney walked away from the deal, the press releases being very polite verbiage that she was asking for too much, and was unrealistic about design... wasn't there a plan to have each person enter by pressing the right bricks on a wall?

To say that they got it wrong, or didn't plan might be putting the blame in the wrong place. JK Rowling might have had the vision of a quaint village, and forced Universal into this situation.

I have heard this. I heard the thing about the bricks in the wall and that she had ultimate approval....I don't know how much is true, but if most of it's true, maybe Disney made the right decision.

I found it very odd that JK Rowling did not and has not said anything at all about the opening or about WWofHP. I know she is very private and doesn't make many appearances, but I have not even seen a quote or comment from her about HP. She's been to the movie premiers, posed for pictures, made a comment or two, but absolutely nothing about Wizarding World? I know she was at the opening, I saw one picture of her, but other than that....nothing. She couldn't step out to cut the ribbon? Give a quote to Orlando Sentinal? Something? I think it's very strange. Maybe she saw some of her requirements weren't such a good idea? Maybe she wasn't happy with how Universal handled it?

Or maybe she has SO much $$$ now that she really dosen't care a whole bunch??

According to local news...

People are complaining that the WWOHP is way too crowded and there is nothing to do but look around. Once people have ridden the new ride, they are just milling around.

Universal has taken steps to try to alleviate these problems.

They have stopped selling alcohol at Three Broomsticks.

They are forcing everyone to enter through the Jurassic Park adjacent entrance.

They are handing out tickets to people in line that must be given to the employees at the entrance of the ride in order to stop line jumping.

And my favorite....

Wait for it....

Day guests should arrive after 3pm. (This translates to "pay for a full day but only use it for a half day because the area is just too small)

Based on what people are saying who are actually IN the park, none of this is true.

They've stopped selling MIXED drinks and liquor, because it takes too long to mix and serve them. You can still get beer and wine. Hogs Head Brew (a beer) continues to be sold.

The "after 3pm" reference comes from a handy-dandy touring guide that Universal has printed up and is handing out both at the ticket booth and in the hotels. Due to the popularity of the WWOHP, they're recommending visitors check out the rest of the two parks during the morning (ie, Spiderman, the Mummy, the Simpsons, etc...) and save their visit to the WWOHP for the afternoon. Several recent visitors have commented that the crowds die down significantly in the late afternoon and evening, so this makes sense.

Helping people plan their visit so they can get the most out of it is good customer service. Universal is passing on common sense tips that you can get on any of these boards.

And frankly, if you can't come up with anything to do in two complete theme parks besides "mill around", you probably won't have a good time anywhere. It's not like there's anything preventing these folks from wandering over to Jurassic Park.

My son has been to WDW three times - twice with me, and once with his best friend's family. He says he likes travelling with me best. Why? Because we hit the park early, skip the lines, use fast passes, retreat to our hotel during the busiest times, and basically make the most of our day. When his friend's family went, they slept in, ate a leisurely breakfast, arrived at the parks around lunchtime, ate lunch in the park, and then wondered why they were neck-deep in other visitors and couldn't get on any rides other than the TTA. My son had a good time, but if that had been his only experience of Disney, he says he'd never want to go back.

For that matter, we'll never buy another ticket to Mickey's Christmas Party, as we didn't enjoy the crowds at all and didn't find that it was worth the extra cost.

As for how much of a success the WWOHP has been... Well, this year our family vacation money is going to Universal Studios, not Disney. :wizard:

The way we see it, is that Disney will still be there in 5 or 6 years, or whenever we travel again. But for now we want to check out something new. In December. During the Value Season!

Nope! Just that we've never been there before, so it's cool to see something new.

We've done Disney. Twice. And the longer we wait to go back, the likelier it is that they'll have something new to show us. :goodvibes

Besides, Disney has serious competition for our family dollars now, and I don't just mean Universal. We just got back from a week in a cabin on a beach in Maine and can't WAIT to go back. My husband's already talking about going back for another week next year!

Maine was possibly our Best Vacation Ever, and even losing my son's glasses in the surf didn't ruin it.

(But I also want to go hiking in New Hampshire some time soon...)

Wow you have Stamina.:flower3: I couldn't wait 5 or 6 years until I visited Disney again. I get Disneyitis every year. (That's the desperate need to go to Disney that cannot be denied) Even when we spent our time at Universal we ended up at Epcot on an afternoon and it was great.:thumbsup2

To each their own.:cool1:

I find this odd as well. JK has been notoriously protective of her franchise, demanding alot of control on how her brand is presented. It seems odd that she hasn't shown her face at all, or done an interview or two about it or at least some sort of press.

I have to think that some of the design flaws (in the shops especially) may be a result of concessions by Universal to JK's vision of what she wanted. Universal is still at fault for these flaws since JK and her team had no clue how to run a theme park and Universal should have been more assertive or realistic about the problems that would arise. Just my thoughts from the stories I have read.

A coworker just got back from visiting Universal. She went there specifically to see Potterville.

She is still "discussing" with the package seller some of what they promised vs what they received. Basically early admission to the park from the hotel. They did not get what was promised. This is not a Universal issue but she was also promised early admission to Potterville which she did not receive.

They found that Potterville was less crowded after 3:00pm which matches what others are saying and what Universal is telling guests.

They rode FJ five times. :thumbsup2 They loved it. They think that the posted wait times for FJ are off by half. Wait times for the other Potterville rides were accurate. They think the posted wait time for FJ was because it was a new ride and Universal did not have enough experience with the ride to be accurate.

After they had been through the castle, which they loved, they used the single rider line which allowed them to get on the ride fast. But a Universal employee said to NOT do the single rider line unless you have been through the wait area. My coworker agrees with this as well. The wait area is a must see. And you should do it a couple of times to take it all in.

They liked the attractions but it was crowded and expensive.

They might go back in five years.

Later,
Dan

I did a Google search for the heck of it and could not find even one quote or comment from JK about WWofHP. She was actually at the opening and she didn't pose for even one picture? The only picture I saw of her was not posed, it was just a audience/crowd shot. Maybe part of the deal was that she wouldn't do any press for WWofHP, but I still think it's very strange and would love to know the reason.

Every time this thread, I think of It's A Wonderful Life
OMG........as soon as the one poster said Potterville it got in my head............." Potter, you are nothing but a warped frustrated old man, sitting there spinning your webs"......................:rotfl2:

All the horror stories of how the opening went kept us away during our late June/early July trip.

We ended up going to Typhoon Lagoon and DisneyQuest instead (which was new for us this year). If Wizarding World had opened in April or earlier, so the crowds had died down, we probably would have gone this year.

But since we are Harry Potter geeks, and we enjoyed Island of Adventure last year, we will certainly check it out the next time we are in Orlando.

... which probably won't be until at least 2012. Probably 2014.
