My daughter is hostessing a baby shower for her close friend and driving from Cleveland to Delaware. She is picking up the entire cost for a luncheon in a very nice and pricey restaurant. She has received very few responses - one way or the other. She has to give the restaurant a count. The invitations have been out for a while and several people asked for invites, but have still not responded.

Are they waiting for a better offer?

Pet peeve of mine, and I know I've posted on this very subject before.

I completely do not understand why a person cannot take a minute out of his or her day and make a phone call, write an email, or check a box on an invitation. Why should the host then have to go through all the trouble of calling non-respondents to see if they're able to come?

It's good manners, considerate, and many times needed for the host to have a formal headcount. I can never grasp why people don't RSVP.

oy, I think people today have forgotten what RSVP means.

according to an etiquette book I once read, you're not supposed to include a "response" card with a formal invitation -- to a wedding or similar event -- because the person invited is supposed to write a brief note accepting or declining the invitation. but it's become standard to include such a card because otherwise many people would never respond.

and you also have to make phone calls to the people who neglect to send back the card.

I guess they assume you know whetehr they're coming or not...

We seem to be hearing this more & more often. I wonder if people are just so busy now days that they forget to do things. I can't imagine so many people would pruposely be so rude. Last year we didn't get a single response to DD Bday party, but everyone showed up. I can't really blame the kids, but you'd think their parents would know better.
