No Longer coming to you Live from Disney World! Take 3 DDW'S TAMBU LOUNGE 8/6

After lunch at LTT, it was time for the event I had been looking forward to for quite some time....Afternoon Tea at the Grand Floridian with a pretty sizable group of DISers. But not just any DISers, this group largely represented a "Who's Who" of the Dining Review thread.

The wait and lunch at LTT seemed to take forever and the end result was that I left my family outside of LTT to take the Russian roulette of boat or monorail to the GF. I chose the monorail and thankfully arrived quickly.

I was lucky to have a few minutes before we were seated to chat with Hunter and Paula and Brenda and Em. As it would turn out, we would be seated at different tables so I really enjoyed having a few minutes with them. As luck would have it, I also had a few minutes to talk with Vicki at the end of the tea so I was able to squeeze in a few minutes with everyone.

I was seated with Barb, Linda, Sue, and Rachel. I must say I had terrific table mates. The conversation flowed easily and comfortably and it did not seem like we were just getting acquainted.

I must add that it was such an honor and delight to spend some quality time with Barb, as she so tirelessly and without complaint took on the monstrous task that was the live dining thread for well over a year. Sending in live reports to Barb was such a pleasure and she effortlessly made it so, by being so friendly, pleasant, and gracious.

As to the details of the tea, I am afraid that my photos fall woefully short of what I "should" have. There have been so many great photos though that I think you have the general feel for the tea. I was caught up in the conversation! ;)

I chose the Buckingham Tea as my selection with the seasonal offering of Nutcracker tea.

I really enjoyed the taste of the tea. It had a light flavor with a hint of holiday spice.

For my sandwiches, I elected to go with Barb's feedback regarding the pear and gorgonzola. I chose to special order all my sandwiches as pear and gorgonzola.

Barb was absolutely on the money with her suggestion. These sandwiches were absolutely delicious.

Sadly, I do not have a picture of the wonderful scone or berry tart. The lemon curd and clotted cream were wonderful with the scone.

For dessert, I chose the berries and creme, counting on this being a light way to end the tea.

This was such a nice way to end the edible offerings of the tea. The berries were sweet and the creme was a nice complement.

Linda, I want you to know that I have the tea pot charm added to my charm bracelet. Thank you again for such a sweet, thoughtful gift.

As everyone has mentioned the tea was quite an event in terms of length. I believe it lasted a little over three hours from start to finish. Fortunately the company was outstanding and the time was well spent.

I must add that this was my first experience with the Afternoon Tea, but it certainly won't be my last. I love that I have such a special memory of my first time here with such a great group of ladies and gentleman and I look forward to more experiences here in the future.

Wow Barb, what a lovely dedication to everyone. Just beautiful!! :flower3: Linda, we Canucks ALSO use the "U", so that must make us right... right!!?? Aww, I'm so glad Hunter got to participate. :goodvibes Great review, especially from someone who knows her tea!

Ha! - we must be right !! :)

First, I have to sneak in a review of Be Our Guest. This was a must do for us so we went to lunch about 2 hours before tea! Oops!

I ordered the croque monsiuer. It is soooo good here. That gruyere cheese is sinful. This is no way healthy for me but it is delicious.

Unfortunately Corey didn't like his sandwich this time. He really liked it last time but for some reason he didn't like it this time.

I ordered the grey stuff cupcake for dessert.

It was kind of disappointing! I was expecting the grey stuff to be really rich but it was light and didn't really have a great flavor

Now off to tea! Corey explored Magic Kingdom while I had my tea.

The winter floral arrangements were beautiful!

For my tea I ordered the nutcracker as well. It was delicious! I loved it.

Thanks Barb for showing the before and after photos of this course over the years because I thought I only remembered having lemon curd. I wonder now if I could sub the strawberry preserves for lemon curd. I LOVE this lemon curd. I could literally spoon it in my mouth. It is just amazing.

Sadly, I didn't touch the strawberry jam or the strawberry tart.

The sandwiches were tasty as well. I agree with Barb about the pear and gorgonzola being the best. The sweet pear just makes that sandwich! I also requested two onion tarts. I love those onion tarts. The carmelized onions taste like dessert! I could eat that every day. My next favorite sandwich is the curried chicken salad.

All in all, another great dessert! Last time we were there we got pastries and the strawberries and cream but we also got every single pastry they offered because we were the last ones in the restaurant!

I just adore this strawberries and cream. I love that the strawberries are fresh and the cream is sooo rich yet light at the same time and sooo tasty!

All in all a great meal! Minus the slow service. We were there until 6pm or so and had to be at California Grill in an hour and half so were a bit rushed. I don't know how I would ever get hungry in time for Cali grill. I kept telling my stomach to get hungry. It took our server 30 minutes to take care of our checks! I can't believe it takes that long. Disney is not designed for separate checks. I loved Linda's present to Barb for the live thread. It was so amazing and I cried as well! Anytime anyone cries happy tears it makes me cry!! It was a great time with awesome ladies (and man!)! I can't wait to go back.

DeeDee: What a sweet review of the tea. I agree, Barb managed the live thread so tirelessly and graciously.

I'm glad we were able to meet up for at least the tea - even though we were at separate tables. You never know when our paths will cross again. :)

Rachel: I'm with you, that lemon curd is amazing!

Swirlygirl: I agree! :thumbsup2

Barb: I love your walk down memory tea lane! You were the influence for my first mother/daughter tea. And I thank you for giving me the heads up about the salmon sandwich substitution. :goodvibes

Also, my October dates are un-booked yet but I'm hoping for the end of Oct. I will be rooming with another DISer (from the TR boards) since it will likely be a solo trip. I'm definitely thinking afternoon tea is a must do!

I just found this thread over the weekend and read all of it (whew). Will you be doing another one soon? We are going in June and would love to participate!!

Hi Everyone!! I am backtracking a little bit as for various reasons I wasn’t able to update for a little while. So.. back in time to Kona we go!!

The Morning for our Kona breakfast came VERY early. You may or may not remember that we had spent some time in the Crew Cup Lounge the previous night and had a great time with Beth. That night went into the early morning hours and so getting up in the morning was quite difficult! We however did drag our butts out of bed so we could say goodbye to Beth as she was leaving that day. The original plan was for only myself to attend this breakfast as Hunter is not a breakfast person. In fact I had been asked so many times I lost count if Hunter would join us for breakfast that day and I kept saying no. Turned out he did join us but the originally arty of 11 had shrunk to 4 plus Hunter!

So like I said it was QUITE early when we were heading out…

The sun was just rising

We took the boat from Wilderness Lodge to the Contemporary and then the monorail to bring us to the Poly.

We were actually the first to arrive but not knowing whose name the ADR was under and who else was actually going to be there we waited to the side without checking in.

Soon Brenda and Em arrived and then Barb. As it turned out our late night/early morning had been a bit too much for Beth and she was unable to join us this morning.

We were seated not too much longer (after a brief meeting with DeeDee!)

Presented with the menu.

ry%3D400

After some debate on the menu Brenda and I decided to share her version of the Macadamia Nut pancakes.

(sorry I cut them before remembering the picture!)
ry%3D400

Upon seeing the toppings they provided we asked for more so that we could each have some. After waiting.. and waiting Brenda was kind enough to say that I could use the ones originally provided as she was sure that another set-up would be coming soon. Unfortunately they never arrived so I was able to enjoy them while Brenda was left with just regular pancakes. The pancakes were good this way and plenty filling.

Hunter chose the Samoan for his breakfast.
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

He took a few bites of his to only discover that the hollandaise sauce was more like a lemon curd as it was thick and curdled! To put it mildly it was not what he wanted to eat. We sat there waiting for the server to let him know the issue. However, by the time he arrived Hunter was no longer interested in breakfast here so we just asked for the check.

The check took a LONG time to arrive and then the server said “Mickey Magic” happened. Apparently it was “magic” that we did not have to pay for the items that were no good.

Service here was EXTREMELY SLOW. We were not provided refills and I was PARCHED. Unfortunately this has cemented in Hunters mind that we will NEVER return to Kona again.. We had had slow service here in the past and this combined with Hunter’s not good breakfast just made it very clear that this would not appear on his dining radar again.

As to the mystery of those fully consumed Macadamia Nut pancakes?!?!

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

ry%3D400

Yes.. those were mine! And I did enjoy them! However it was not and will never be repeated! Talk about a full tummy!

Following Breakfast we all headed to Magic Kingdom for some fun! Before long it was time to head out of MK for Afternoon Tea!

This was to be a Girl’s Tea however upon learning that there was an opening I jokingly asked Hunter if he wish to join us. Being the good sport that he is he agreed!

I went with the Buckingham Tea and started with the Princess Breakfast Tea
ry%3D400

This had a bit too much vanilla for me and so it wasn’t quite to my liking. I asked our server if they by chance had the tea I had the previous time. A Green Strawberry Tea. Thankfully they were able to find some for me and I was a happy girl!

Hunter went with the Prince Edwards Tea and started with the Russian Earl Grey
ry%3D400

And the “tea” he prefers! (A Johnny Walker Black Label)
ry%3D400

A table full of cozies!
ry%3D400

A sneak peak of the Grand Christmas Tree.
ry%3D400

The first course of tea sandwiches
ry%3D400

Not caring for egg salad or Salmon I asked for 2 each of the Chicken Curry and Pear Gorgonzola! These little Sandwiches are delightful! I really enjoy them!

Hunter received his Pate and Cheese Plate.
ry%3D400

These are not the best Pate’s we have had but they are enjoyable.

The second course for me. I thought I had changed out the Strawberry Tart for the Scone but maybe I just took Hunters lol! I love both the Lemon Curd and the Strawberry Preserves with the Devonshire Cream!
ry%3D400

Hunter also received the same course but I don't think he had any of it!

For the final course I wanted to try something new so I went with the Trifle.
ry%3D400

It’s beautiful!
ry%3D400

I was not happy with it though. It was a pear and the pears were not ripe. They were quite firm and not juicy at all. Next time I will go with the Strawberries and Cream again!

Overall I enjoyed the tea and the company! However, as others said.. service was SLOW!! Seems to have been the theme for our last few meals! Hopefully the trend was not to continue!

Does anyone know if the trifle is seasonal or if it was just changed? I went in December 2012 and I'm pretty sure my trifle was raspberry and strawberry. It was delicious.

Beautiful sunrise pictures! I am sorry Kona wasn't better for you all. Makes me feel that I made the right choice to grab some extra sleep so I wasn't a zombie the rest of the trip!

Jay had the Samoan the last time we were at Kona and I thought it was one of the best things I had ever eaten. That is what I would have had if I had joined you all. I am sorry that it wasn't what I remembered!

We actually had a breakfast reservation planned for later in the trip but ended up cancelling - sounds like we made the right choice!

Lisatav: I'm not sure since I've only had the pastries or the strawberries and cream. Hoping another DISer jumps in to help you out. :)

Paula: I'm glad Hunter joined us as well at tea.

Ugh, I forgot about Hunter's hollandaise fiasco at Kona Café. It was definitely not the best breakfast at Kona. I'm just glad that I didn't pay for the side of eggs that I didn't receive. :rotfl:

I just went for tea in January, and the trifle was bananas foster, so I went with the strawberries and cream. I wasn't disappointed with my choice.

But it would seem that the trifle does change throughout the year, although I'm not sure the frequency.

Thanks to everyone for providing such an entertaining thread! I'm obviously late to the party, but I've enjoyed reading everyone's reports and they were of great help when I was trip planning.

Thanks for the reply! I really enjoyed the raspberry and strawberry trifle I had last time. Bananas foster sounds wonderful as well! The tea was my favorite part of my 2012/2013 New Years trip.

updated 2/20/14

sadly, this is my last update from the december DISmeet. emme & i were only able to squeeze in 1.5 days & we spent our last few hours at animal kingdom.

after the mickey & minnie meet & greet, i was thirsty & emme was getting hungry.

we stopped at our favorite QS at animal kingdom which is the yak & yeti counter service.

i decided on a liquid lunch & chose:

emme chose:

Chicken Fried Rice

the chicken fried rice is a really great deal for $3.99. the serving is pretty generous & the rice is tasty. emme doesn't like the chicken so i picked out all the chicken for her....so i guess i had a lunch of chicken & a bud light.

after finishing our lunch, we said hello to some friends:

after safaris....we made our way to the tram, got in the car & drove the 2 hours home. it was a sad drive as our trip was so dang short.

we had a wonderful time meeting everyone & the dinner at YSH was fantastic. i hope we will be able to have some more DISmeets in the future.

in march, emme & i will be having our longest stay at disney (9 days, 8 nights!!!) & we will be sharing this vacation with our friend rachel! i am so excited as i have never stayed more than 4 days at disney so this is a new record (even beating our the 7 day cruise on the fantasy).

just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone for your kindess, love of food & awesome conversations on this short trip. it was a total pleasure to meet everyone. :lovestruc emme & i had a fantastic time.

Despite having near perfect meals at California Grill in the past, I was nervous about this meal. The reviews after the renovation had ranged from mediocre to downright terrible! I am happy to say that our experience was much different from those reviews and Cali still reigns as my favorite WDW restaurant.

Paula & Hunter, Brenda & Em, Barb, Rachel and I were in attendance for this meal. I actually didn’t have time to head back to POP after the tea to change so Paula and Hunter were kind enough tolet me tag along with them back to the Wilderness Lodge while they got ready. Very nice seeing the lobby all decorated but unfortunately I didn’t take a picture. I really enjoyed the boat ride both ways.

We arrived and were seated promptly … our table looked magical …

From the pictures, I wasn’t sure how I felt about the new decour. In person, I really loved it.

The menu –

One change that I didn’t like is the bread …

I loved the old bread at Cali … super crunchy outside, soft in the middle. I can’t comment on the new rolls as I didn’t have any. I didn’t care for the lavender focaccia. Just not my taste.

First up was a surprise from the Chef …

This was a wonderful, creamy mushroom risotto! A great way to start the meal!

My drink –

I don’t remember what this was – a margarita of some sort that I enjoyed very much. I am sure someone has a picture of the drink menu that will refresh my memory.

I started with the Cali version of “surf & turf” …

The clams were wonderful. Small, tender and very flavorful. I had tried a bit of Paula’s bone marrow at the Yachtsman and enjoyed the bite I had. I admit that I couldn’t get myself to even try this version.

As you can see if the last picture, my drink went down fairly quickly. Paula & Hunter again were kind enough to share a bit of their wine …

For dinner, I chose the Dragon Roll which I shared with Emily …

For those that read my previous reviews, sushi is fairly new to my world. Andrew and I had this roll previously and loved it. This did not disappoint. Very fresh and all the flavors worked wonderfully together.

After our entrees we had a quick break to go out on the newer landing to watch first the Water Pageant

And then Holiday Wishes!

I loved that we got to see the Holiday version!

On to Dessert –

Now from the previous reviews, you know that Hunter has a way with the Chefs and dessert. He had asked us what looked good to us but then asked the waitress to have the Chef to order our dessert for us … I don’t think any of us imagined what we were going to receive!

I absolutely loved the mini Coke float …

Actually didn’t have any of it, but loved the presentation!

Sadly, I cannot remember all the wonderful sweet goodness and others will have to chime in here. Everything I tasted was better than the previous bit.

At the end of the meal we were visited by Chef Eddie …

And then Heather …

Heather commented that the little Coke bottles tend to disappear. I jokingly told her that I was thinking about taking ours. She said that she would look the other way. I would never have taken the bottle but as I was leaving she came out with a little box for me to take home that had three of the bottles in it! A great memento to have to remember a truly great meal and a wonderful evening!

Great start with our California Grill reviews Vicki! :thumbsup2 I'll try to get to work on mine soon, but I first wanted to respond to some of the recent posts.

Wow Barb, what a lovely dedication to everyone. Just beautiful!! :flower3:

Thanks Rob! But I was only giving credit where credit was due. :goodvibes

Oh, and stay tuned because I think you will soon be making another appearance in our dining report. ;)

What a special afternoon! And well deserved, Barb!

Thanks so much! Good to hear from you again. :)

And btw, for those that don't remember, SwirlyGirly was an outstanding reporter for the live thread back in July of last year. She was so good that she won the June/July live thread game. :thumbsup2

I just found this thread over the weekend and read all of it (whew). Will you be doing another one soon? We are going in June and would love to participate!!

Hi Audrey! So glad you found us. While I might do a much more limited version of the live thread (such as live coverage from the F & G festival, as an example ;)), I don't foresee that I'll be hosting a full-blown version again. Though the experience was very rewarding for me and I have no regrets, the thread grew to the point that it took up all of my free time and then some. ;) So sadly I'm going to have to decline your offer but thanks so much for making it. I hope you will continue to follow along with our dining report though and that you have a great trip in June. :goodvibes

Thank you so much Patty, not only for contributing to the dining report from our December trip but for being an outstanding reporter for the live thread. Your reviews were always great and your photos were wonderful. The photos of your beautiful little girl Emme never fail to make me smile. :goodvibes

I'm sad we didn't get to spend more time with you and Emme during the December trip. I especially wish that you would have been able to join us for the tea, since you are another one of the people who were instrumental to the success of the live thread. But considering the looong time that we ended up spending at the tea, it was probably best that you decided not to come and head home early to study for your exams. ;) I hope though that we will meet again soon.

Oh, and although Patty's portion of our December trip dining report is now complete, it won't be long until she is again contributing to this thread. I'm very happy to report that Patty and Rachel have agreed to do live updates for us from the Flower & Garden Festival during their upcoming trip together. So for a "limited time only" this thread will have some "live" reviews again, in addition to our ongoing dining report from December. Thanks Patty & Rachel! :thumbsup2

Great CG review Vicki
We ate there later that same week and I agree, the sushi is really, really good there
Can't wait to go back!

Patty, I hate that I didn't get to meet you and Emme and Beth, but hopefully our trips will converge at some point!

Vicki, that was such a great open for Cali Grill! I can't wait to read the rest of the reviews. :goodvibes
