No it is not ok to Breast Feed ...

why can't breastfeeding moms pump and have bottles handy when going out in public?

Some babies that are breastfed will not latch properly to a bottle and not eat from it. My ds would never take the bottle when I breastfed him.

In all actuality, the only time a breast should be seen is during the latching on process and the coming off process.

People have argued it is a "two way street", well, I say NA NA. When you ask me to go to a restroom to nurse my child because little Johnny might see the top part of a breast, that is not a two way street. I swear, more skin is shown at Typhoon Lagoon than what is shown during the time I breast feed my child.

No one is saying to go into the bathroom, they are saying, like you admitted, that the entire breast does not need to be displayed while the baby is nursing. Nurse your babies wherever you want, in full view. If the baby is fussy, yes, more of the breast will be displayed - you can't help it. However, if the baby is calmly breastfeeding, you do not have to expose your entire breast. The majority of women who've I've seen breastfeeding have been very discreet, but every now and then...

They can. But they shouldn't have to. You have to keep breast milk chilled, or it goes bad. Carrying around a cooler with a bottle is a pain. And if your breastfed baby is used to nursing, they will likely prefer that the milk be warm. How are these moms supposed to heat up the milk in the bottle? One of the reasons I loved breastfeeding so much was that it was so easy and convenient. No bottles or stove-top heating.

I don't think any of the pro-breastfeeding people here are advocating that women remove their entire top and bra and let everything out while their baby slurps away. As a previous poster said, the only time the breast is really exposed is while the baby is latching on and off. I don't know anyone who gets both girls out at once. The baby only has one mouth, so in general women only have one breast out at a time. This is being made into a much bigger deal than it is.

My sons see more flesh on an episode of Survivor than they do when I feed my baby.

I am discreet when feeding my daughter, out of respect for others. However, I would truly love that respect to come back around.

Please...no more muffin tops, man breasts, hairy backs, butt skimming mini skirts, exposed thongs, plumber's cracks or banana hammocks.

When you all stomp your feet and demand the above offenders to "cover up", I will put my breast away.

I will answer this one for your lillygator . . . sometimes a mom will not produce when it comes to pumping and sometimes it hurts like heck. Have you ever used a pump before?
Sometimes the child will refuse the bottle, and on top of that, you don't always have a place to "warm the bottle".

When it comes to breastmilk, you can not heat it up in a microwave. You need to let it sit in hot water to warm up. If you let the breastmilk sit at room temperature, then you need to feed the baby the milk within a four hour period.

Until you breastfeed, you do not understand the bond that there is between a mother and child. Sometimes the child will refuse the bottle and only want mom. It is sometimes a comfort thing. If the child is a newborn, there is an amount of time you must wait before introducing the bottle so it won't cause nipple confusion. Sometimes when the bottle is offered, the child will refuse the mother.

It is easier to just bring the breast along and not worry about the extra time to pump and "prepare" bottles. Its not like you can pump 18 ounces of milk an hour before you have to leave.

Wow that's not fair either. Have you seen the cost of a pump? It can be a pure hassle to carry around breast milk for hours on end. It isn't like formula where you can do it at room temp always and not worry.

Also pumping doesn't always work for women. A few friends I know could never pump as much as they could produce for their child while feeding. Something about pumping just wasn't as good at getting the milk out as the child is.

To me that is asking too much both for cost and ease.

You just opened up a new can of worms. :)

I said earlier that people will never agree when it comes to this subject and that still appears to be the case. I don't think that most are asking anyone to go to the bathroom or car but just to show a little courtesy. I think that there will always be zealots and exhibitionists but from what I've seen most are courteous. I think that the women who completely expose themselves are pretty rare.

Anyway, this thread is lasting a while! I thought that it would be closed by now.

Not all breatfeeding moms use bottles.

Storage, temp, etc.....

Just wanted to add another reason. You may need empty your supply. It is incredibly uncomfortable when your breast become engorged. The only way to relieve it is to pump or have the baby feed. I don't know about you ladies, but I never wanted to drag my pump around WDW. So that left the baby to relieve the engorgement.

They are both private parts that are to be covered up in public... What part of that don't you understand?

I don't consider breasts to be a "private part". That term is normally used for reproductive organs.

I'm going out on a limb here. I think the bolded part of the OP's post leads one to believe the subject of the OP's breast was "hanging out". One can breast feed a baby without her breast hanging out.

How exactly can that be done, without shoving the baby up your shirt? If someone cannot afford to replace their entire wardrobe with the shirts made to open for breast feeding, then they are going to have to lift the shirt over the breast.

If you feel that somehow telling a child that as mammals we use our breasts to feed our babies, just as other mammals do is wrong, then I'm sorry but that is your problem. Like I asked before, how do you explain to them how other mammals feed their young? Its truly amazing that something as natural as feeding your child, just like nature has had us do since the beginning, is taboo. People who think that have their own personal issues with breasts and it really has nothing to do with having to explain anything to a child. Hiding the truth, or at least shielding the truth from children about it only creates adults who in turn have hang-ups about seeing a breastfeeding mother, and look where that gets us.

::yes::

Just a couple of questions here...

Since BFing is sooo sexual, do those of you opposed to it in public ask your pets to please move it along or to go cover up? Do you stare at them and want to take pictures of their breasts because they have the audacity to be FLASHING in public?

Since in this culture we are so prudish and many are uncomfortable with bare breasts exposed, should we start taking into consideration those from other cultures that see us with our necks, legs faces exposed? I mean REALLY we are being just as disrespectful to them as well.

Oh and one other thing...yes, if a woman was just whipping her breast out for the heck of it(not Bfing), I would have a problem with it. Breasts are no different than eating utensils and if someone isn't using that fork and knife for feeding purposes, I don't want pointy objects coming towards me :rotfl:

Many babies won't take a bottle from a mother who is breastfeeding. I couldn't even be in the house; he just wouldn't take the bottle if he knew I was there. And really, why should we have to express milk and put it in a bottle. You would never be reading this controversy in any other country because most of the mothers around the world nurse their babies and no one thinks a thing of it. Here in America however, we are much more uptight about nudity and the human body, so that something completely normal and natural becomes something "rude" and "disgusting" that should be kept hidden so that, God forbid, someone might feel a little uncomfortable. For crying out loud, women are just feeding their babies. GET OVER IT!

Can you agree that exposing both breasts is totally not necessary? That to me is too much and what bothers me to see. That and the women who play with their breasts in plain view. I assume they are trying to prep, but that could be done under the shirt.

Thank goodness, a voice of reason.

As former breast-feeding Mom of a 31 and 29 year old (the point being that I breast fed in public when it was NOT ok), all anyone is asking in this post is for a little discretion. BF Mom's do not have the right, IMO, to assume that "just look the other way" is socially acceptable. Just cover up a bit, that's all anyone needs. Yes, latching on for a new baby is sometimes difficutly, and detaching can be just as difficult. But what happened to civility? It is not just all about me or all about your baby or your breast feeding. It's about all of us. Just be civil and discreet and you can feed your baby sitting right next to me on a bench anywhere at WDW.

My feeling about this is if a woman is brash enough to do this in plain view, I have no problem staring and trying to see as much as I can, even grabbing the camera if its handy...:rotfl: :rotfl:

How OLD are you?

So if a man whipped out his private parts in front of your 8 year old daughter, you would be ok with it????

Let me know how it goes after you're arrested as a sex offender. :thumbsup2

Be an adult. If you can't see that it's not the same thing...and you feel that taking out your junk in public should be just as acceptable as breastfeeding...then I suggest you see someone.

So if my wife and I want to have sex at one of the parks, the other people should change their thinking so they aren't uncomfortable or just simply look away???? And then teach their kids that its how people make babies, its not perverted or indecent...

So why not allowing people to create human life in public, afterall, God intended us to reproduce...

I'm truthfully wondering why you feel it is acceptable to compare the two.

You know it's not the same. I know you're trying to make your point by being petty and disgusting. Good on ya'!

Happy Holidays!
