In Texas it is illegal to go door to door asking for donations, panhandling. Selling things is ok, but I tried to just give a donation and was told by the polite young man it was illegal.
A few days ago, I had a teenage boy come to the door selling knives! We're talking about big huge kitchen knives. Even though he wasn't brandishing them at the door (the knives were in a briefcase), that was still unsettling.
Luckily I recognized the boy as one of my little brother's classmates from school, so I didn't call the cops immediately. But I gave him a talking to about how people in my neighborhood will most definitely be calling the cops on him. He said he couldn't find a regular summer job doing life guarding or busing tables, and this was the only gig he could find. Sad, but still...

Cutco is a pyramid scheme. They flood all college campuses with flyers and every kid that "takes a job" selling these knives has to BUY A SET. So even if the kids dont sell ANYTHING, it doesnt matter. The number of sets sold to "job seekers" is very lucrative and most of them end up selling at least one set to their parents or family. There was a huge article on them in my local paper, it is a big scam.
From what I hear, the knives are pretty good, I ahve never tried them myself. I know 2 couples that have recieved them as a wedding gift.
My husband actually worked for them years ago. We owned a seasonal business so in the off season he would take any job he could find. He went with Cutco one ytear and did very well. There is no pyramid or anything like that. Plus it's against their rules to sell door-to-door. Referrals only. I've known lots of kids that have done it over the years and they all did well.
One of my sons did it for a summer as well. Yes he bought the demo set but when he was done he sold it on ebay for almost twice that he paid for it.
They are awesome knives. I've had mine for about 15 years.
My brother also did the Cutco thing for a summer. He did alright with it, but ended up not going back to it. I don't think he liked doors being shut in his face either...
The name just came back to me... they're called "Vector Marketing."
Yes, Vector. Was he going door to door because that's a no no with them.

He was fine...still tease him about the missing fingerprint though.
They come IN to the store as well...selling baseball tickets, gym memberships, etc. That happened to me decades ago when I was living in Houston. It was an older really scary looking guy. I do thing he was really selling knives - but like really who is going to let this guy with KNIVES into their home. It was during the day when most people were home alone.A few days ago, I had a teenage boy come to the door selling knives! We're talking about big huge kitchen knives.
