No I will not donate to your college fund

In Texas it is illegal to go door to door asking for donations, panhandling. Selling things is ok, but I tried to just give a donation and was told by the polite young man it was illegal.

I like my sign, it seems to work. I'm home all day, and the only time I've had someone knock was during the few days the sign was down because we had just installed a new front door and I kept forgetting to put it back up.

It simply states:

No Solicitors
No Sales Persons
No Fund Raising
No Proselytizing
No Exceptions!

I find this takes care of everything from Girl Scouts to Jehovah's Witnesses.

before I put the sign on the front door, we had a guy stop by selling educational books. After I repeatedly told him no, he then had the nerve to ask for a snack! He was a young guy, it was like, 110 degrees out, so I closed (and locked) the door, and brought him out a cold water bottle and a granola bar because I felt bad for him.

A few days ago, I had a teenage boy come to the door selling knives! :scared1: We're talking about big huge kitchen knives. Even though he wasn't brandishing them at the door (the knives were in a briefcase), that was still unsettling.

Luckily I recognized the boy as one of my little brother's classmates from school, so I didn't call the cops immediately. But I gave him a talking to about how people in my neighborhood will most definitely be calling the cops on him. He said he couldn't find a regular summer job doing life guarding or busing tables, and this was the only gig he could find. Sad, but still...

Cutco is a pyramid scheme. They flood all college campuses with flyers and every kid that "takes a job" selling these knives has to BUY A SET. So even if the kids dont sell ANYTHING, it doesnt matter. The number of sets sold to "job seekers" is very lucrative and most of them end up selling at least one set to their parents or family. There was a huge article on them in my local paper, it is a big scam.

From what I hear, the knives are pretty good, I ahve never tried them myself. I know 2 couples that have recieved them as a wedding gift.

A few weeks ago I had an older man carrying a coffee can taking up money for cancer. He came to my BACK door which was open and just the screen door was shut. He had on a school system shirt that my kids go to but I didn't recognize him from school either. I said no thanks I don't have cash and shut and dead-bolted the door.

I've had quite a few older teenagers try to sell me newspaper subscriptions to one town over, not our paper and claimed to go to the local high school, also for their college fund They don't do door to door sales at our school district that I know of. Luckily they were polite and I shut the door quickly.

We had a very polite guy come to the door back when the kids were smaller and was taking orders for a child's dictionary with nice pictures. He wanted the cash now, book in a few weeks. I told him when he got some in stock, come back with the book and I'd pay for it then. Never saw him again.

My cousin worked for Cutco, and many family members did end up purchasing items and complete sets from her. She only lasted about 2 months, but by that time the company had made their money off of her.
I will admit though the the knives are amazing! My mother has purchased two more online and they do make slicing and dicing less of a hassle.

Well I decided to call the Dispatch today and ask about the boy that came to the door. Apparently he was legit and it is a program they support. I explained that with the number of scams going on today maybe the program director should rethink the idea of asking for a donation to a college fund after someone turns down the subscription. I asked other around here and all of us thought it was a scam. So at least I wasn't alone in my thinking. I told this to the girl on the phone too. She says she is going to pass along the info. Somehow I doubt she will though.

How rude!! I'm up to my neck in loans from college and I have a year left as an undergraduate/ graduate, then a year as a full-time graduate student. I would never just ask people to pay for my college tuition. I find what those two girls said completely disrespectful. :sad2:

My husband actually worked for them years ago. We owned a seasonal business so in the off season he would take any job he could find. He went with Cutco one ytear and did very well. There is no pyramid or anything like that. Plus it's against their rules to sell door-to-door. Referrals only. I've known lots of kids that have done it over the years and they all did well.
One of my sons did it for a summer as well. Yes he bought the demo set but when he was done he sold it on ebay for almost twice that he paid for it.

They are awesome knives. I've had mine for about 15 years.

My brother also did the Cutco thing for a summer. He did alright with it, but ended up not going back to it. I don't think he liked doors being shut in his face either...

The name just came back to me... they're called "Vector Marketing."

Yes, Vector. Was he going door to door because that's a no no with them.

Well, it was "door to door" with people that we knew, and had experience with. They had him do a lot of cold-calling as well.

He even tried to sell me knives at one point... I think I laughed in his face.:rolleyes1

Ah yes....Cutco. My ex worked for them VERY briefly when he first started dating. I think the fact that he actually sliced his thumb print off while doing a demo for his mom made us believers in how good the knives were though!:rotfl: He was fine...still tease him about the missing fingerprint though.

We have had those door to door kids out here too. Just had a boy for our local paper. He's actually doing the delivering as well. Supposed to start on Sunday. I really get irritated by the Kirby salespeople (although..we actually bought one so hopefully they'll stay away), the chemlawn people (we live in a townhome subdivision), landscapers (again...association), magazines and various religious organizations. I try to be polite, but when they show up at dinner time...I'm not in a happy place. I was accosted by a guy selling perfume in our parking lot at work the other day. :sad2: They come IN to the store as well...selling baseball tickets, gym memberships, etc.

That happened to me decades ago when I was living in Houston. It was an older really scary looking guy. I do thing he was really selling knives - but like really who is going to let this guy with KNIVES into their home. It was during the day when most people were home alone.

Cutco! OMG, I interviewed with them because I picked up a flier about it right after graduating from high school. The fliers don't say what you are selling, so I went to see what it was. And yes, you sell KNIVES! I do remember that they said you weren't supposed to sell door-to-door. I showed up dressed up for an interview and turned out to be a tad overdressed... and kind of surprised to find out what it would actually involve. They offered me the job and I was told the training was the next day. I didn't go.

I also knew a few people who sold books and encyclopedias door to door and they said it was miserable.
